Kakadu is a birdwatching paradise. One of Australia’s greatest national parks, Kakadu is home to a third of Australia’s bird species. The park has a variety of excellent habitats, lies approximately 200km east of Darwin and is roughly a third of the size of Tasmania. Apart from the 280 bird species, the Park is also home to 74 mammal species, 117 reptiles, 25 frogs and 1700 plant species.

After an early pick up from your Darwin hotel, we explore the local Darwin birding hotspots. These include East Point, Lee Point, Nightcliff Rockshelf, Buffalo Creek and Darwin Botanic Gardens. Key species include Rainbow Pitta, Red-headed Honeyeater, Chestnut Rail, Red-collared Lorikeet, Black Butcherbird, Arafura Fantail, Lemon-bellied Flycatcher, Red-tailed Black Cockatoo, Shining Flycatcher, Mangrove Robin, Crimson Finch and Gouldian Finch. Accommodation in Darwin (not included in trip cost).

Early pick up from your hotel and then we head off to Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve. This is a wonderful location to watch the sunrise over a classic Aussie billabong. Key species include Comb-crested Jacana, Black-necked Stork, Green-backed Gerygone, Magpie Goose, Radjah Shelduck, Grey Whistler, Little Kingfisher, White-browed Crake, Glossy Ibis and Whiskered Tern. After a few hours at Fogg Dam we then head into Kakadu NP to find the endemic species such as Chestnut-quilled Rock-Pigeon, Partridge Pigeon, Sandstone Shrikethrush, White-lined Honeyeater, Banded Fruit-Dove. Accommodation at Jabiru.

An early morning start afford us the time to make the most of Kakadu. We visit local billabongs e.g. Angbangbang, and rock art sites e.g. Ubiirr and Burrungkuy, (Nourlangie), looking further for the endemics and other bush and water bird species. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings which highlight this World Heritage listed National Park. Accommodation at Jabiru.

Waking up in Kakadu NP we join an early morning boat cruise on Yellow Waters billabong at Cooinda. One of the highlights of the trip as we observe thousands of waterbirds in their natural surroundings, (keep your eyes peeled for the local crocs too). As we say goodbye to Kakadu via Yurmikmik and southern Kakadu keep a lookout for the rare and endangered Red Goshawk. We then go in search of the elusive Hooded Parrot at Pine Creek, a stronghold for this beautiful species. Accommodation at Pine Creek.

We explore the wonders of Pine Creek, Edith Falls and Katherine and the surrounding birding sites looking for Chestnut-backed Buttonquail, Silver-crowned Friarbird, Australian Bustard, Blue- winged Kookaburra, Red-winged Parrot, Wood Sandpiper and more. Accommodation at Katherine or Pine Creek.

Today after heading to Nitmiluk National Park we take a cruise along the majestic Katherine Gorge looking for river species. Later We head back to Darwin revisiting sites around Edith Falls and Pine Creek. We aim to be back in Darwin by 3pm and debriefing before saying farewell and recounting some birding stories. Accommodation in Darwin (not included).

Mike Barrow started birding as a young birder in the UK before moving to Sydney. Based on the Northern Beaches, Mike owns and runs Aussie Bird Tours. He has worked in Kakadu and is an accredited tour guide with extensive knowledge of the birds of Darwin and Kakadu. Mike is a keen photographer and eBird lister.
