Escape the tourist resorts and coral beaches and discover the true heart of Fiji. Venture inland and you will discover a landscape of dramatic peaks, beautiful forests, sparkling rivers, remote villages and unique history. Visit Nabalesere’s stunning waterfall and challenge yourself to climb the highest mountain in Fiji - Mt Tomaniivi (1324m). Head off the beaten track and visit places rich in biodiversity, witness the endemic birdlife, walk through Fiji's cloud forest, soak up the breathtaking views, and cool off in warm tropical rivers. By experiencing Fiji on foot and hiking along old village paths, you will gain an insight into the vibrant traditional culture that underpins daily life in the highlands. Your trek is run with the blessing of the traditional landowners, which ensures that the Fijian culture is respected and the benefits flow through to the communities you visit. We stay in different villages each night and learn about the local way of life, and listen to their stories whilst sharing a traditional meal. Whilst the village lodgings are basic, you will be warmly welcomed and experience genuine Fijian hospitality. Escorted by local guides, the terrain is physically challenging and interesting, and only requires a day pack.

We will depart early from Suva (approx 7.30am) and head northwards along the scenic King’s Road, and then inland to the rural village of Nabalesere (approx 3 hours drive). Once there we will sevusevu - a tradition to formally ask permission to be in the village and cross their land - and visit their stunning waterfall, where you will stop to soak up the ambience and go for a swim, followed by a cup of draunimoli (lemon leaf tea) and a late lunch back in the village. The walk to the waterfall is steep in places and can be muddy. After lunch we will head back to the King’s Rd, and to where the road takes you inland and uphill to our overnight accommodation in a local homestay at Navai village. You will be well looked after by the family we stay with. The home has flush toilets and a cold water shower. Meals are taken traditionally, seated on the floor; and sleeping is shared with other guests. Accommodation: family homestay, mattresses, sheets and top blankets are provided. Our tip: We recommend starting the day wearing clothes and shoes to walk and get wet in at the waterfall. For safety you should keep your shoes on at all times and get them wet. If you have a second pair of walking sandals or shoes, you can wear these and keep any proper hiking boots dry for the next day. You can change when we return to the village, so it’s also a good idea to have a small bag with dry clothes and a towel prepared, that you can leave in the village. Your main luggage can then stay in the vehicle. As the waterfall is also a cultural site, please don’t strip down to revealing swimwear. Do as the locals do and just get wet. Approx Walking Time / Distance: 1 hr; 3 kms.

After breakfast, we will commence walking along the track up Mt Tomaniivi, Fiji’s highest mountain at 1324m. Guides from the village will look after you. Care must be taken as the path is very steep in places, and can be muddy and slippery. On a clear day you will be rewarded with great views across much of the interior and the cloud forest around us is beautiful. This is also an important bird area as designated by Birdlife International, and you are likely to hear and maybe see some of Fiji’s endemic birds. We will have a small afternoon tea in the village on our return. Afterwards, we will drive on to the village of Naga, about 1 hour further inland. Naga is a picturesque village with a mix of newer tin houses and traditional bures. Sleeping is shared and will either be in a house or in the community hall. There are flush toilets and cold water showers, but be prepared for basic facilities. Once you are settled in we will sevusevu, and you will meet your guides for the next day and spend the evening with the community. Dinner will be served in the community hall. Accommodation: shared by guests in the community hall or house, mattresses and top blankets are provided. Approx Walking Time / Distance: 6 hrs; 9 kms.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today's hike combines wonderful views and a touch of culture and history, walking through old village sites and past several good swimming spots. If the weather’s good, you will hopefully have time to jump in. Afterwards you will start to climb up steeply from the river for 1.5km and arrive in the village of Nubutautau, where you will spend the night. The village hall will be yours to eat and sleep in. There is also a traditional bure that is often available for your use; plus flush toilets and cold showers. We will be well looked after following the sevusevu. You will spend the night on the floor of the community hall or in the bure. Accommodation: shared by guests in the community hall or bure, mattresses and top blankets are provided. Approx Walking Distance: 12 kms.

Meals:  B,L,D

After breakfast, we will be transported to the ridgeline above Nubutautau. From the ridge we will commence westwards with our guides across a battlefield and old village sites. Taking in some amazing 360-degree views, we will slowly descend to the Ba river. The final stretch down can be hot, and there is time to have a cooling swim in the river before lunch. We will then follow the river along the valley, with some rock scrambling and gentle winding paths, to a bridge near the village of Navala, and then a final 1.5km up the road to Bulou’s Lodge. The facilities at the Lodge are simple with a dorm room, flush toilets and cold showers. Tui the owner is a great host. Accommodation: shared by guests in a dorm room with beds or a limited number of private huts may be available. Approx Walking Distance: 21 kms.

Meals:  B,L,D

After a leisurely breakfast, we will load up the vehicle and at approx. 9:30am head back to Navala village to take a look around. Navala is a picturesque Fijian village, with rows of neatly built traditional bures. After soaking up the atmosphere, we will say farewell to the highlands and head down to the coast. Late lunch at a cafe in Nadi (at your own expense). If you are staying in Nadi we can drop you at your hotel, or alternatively arrange a taxi (at your own expense) if you are staying in Denarau. We will head onto Suva after lunch, arriving at approx 7.00pm where the trip concludes.
