Trip highlights

  • Exploring the majestic cities of Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest
  • Experiencing the timelessness of the river landscape
  • Visiting the Basilica in Esztergom and the Danube Bend
  • Discovering the "Little Alföld" Protected Area, the Danube floodplain National park; and the Archaeological Park Carnuntum

Wind your way from the elegant city of Vienna along the Danube Cycle Path. Crossing the Austria - Slovak border the cycle route passes vineyards on the slopes of the Little Carpathian Mountains into the capital, Bratislava. Using quiet country roads this itinerary continues into Hungary where you will pedal through numerous delightful towns. Explore the Baroque city of Györ and visit the unusual artist village of Szentendre and its outlying island before heading to Budapest.

Check into the hotel where you will receive your travel documents. The remainder of the day is free to explore. Enjoy a stroll or visit a typical Heurigen (rustic wine taverns).

In the morning you will meet our representative and receive your bike. From Vienna you take the Danube-Cycle-Path through the national park “Donauauen", which was established to protect the Danube floodplain areas and the large diversity of plants and animals found within this ecosystem. The route continues past the castles of “Orth” and “Eckartsau” before reaching the health resort town of Bad Deutsch Altenburg. Nearby you can view the Roman excavations of Petronell-Carnuntum, an important archaeological site. Overnight Petronell-Carnuntum or Bad Deutsch Altenburg.

Nestled between the hills of Hainburg and the Carpathian Mountains, cycle on to Europe’s youngest capital, Bratislava. The Slovak capital has an enchanting, sleepy old town in addition to magnificent modern buildings.

Meals:  B,D

Continuing along the banks of the Danube you soon reach the Hungarian border and continue through small farming villages to the enchanting landscape of the Szigetköz, an idyllic paradise for birds and fish. In the midst of these untouched lowlands with their more than 500 tiny islands, you will find farming villages and a labyrinth of countless Danube creeks. Following a short train ride you reach Györ, an important city of the Hungarian lowlands with gorgeous Baroque-style old town squares.

Meals:  B,D

Following your departure from Gyor where you need to concentrate on the directions, you cycle today through the landscape of western trans Danubia, passing the national stud in Babolna. The stud is famous for its Arabian horse breeding and is definitely worth a visit. Continue cycling to Komarno (Komarom), on the border between Hungary and Slovakia, the favourite village of King Matthias.

Meals:  B,D

Today you cycle along the banks of the Slovakian Danube on small low-traffic roads through quaint, typical villages. En route to Esztergom you pass the Roman fort of Kelemantia. In Esztergom you can admire the imposing Basilica, the largest Catholic Church in Hungary, and wander along the banks of the Danube before continuing to the Danube Bend.

Meals:  B,D

Amidst the hilly landscape, the Danube divides to create Szentendre island. Take your bike on the ferry across to the island and cycle through typical Hungarian villages. Szentendre is famous for its handicraft boutiques and the open air ethnographic Museum Skanzen. From here you take a boat ride (included) to Budapest and can enjoy the views of Budapest's most popular sights.
