We board the early morning flight from Delhi to Leh (Flight cost not included in trip price. Flight time approx 1 hr 20 mins) in the Indus Valley. If conditions are clear you will be rewarded with grand views across the Great Himalaya and Zanskar ranges before landing at the capital of Ladakh. At 3500 metres it is imperative that we reserve days for acclimatisation. On our first day in Leh we spend time wandering the bazaar and visiting the imposing Leh Palace. From the Palace we can appreciate the extent of Leh including the labyrinth of alleyways that comprise the old town located east of the main bazaar. Overnight Omisala Hotel, Leh

Meals:  B,L,D

We head to Shey Palace and Tikse monastery located approx. 30 minutes’ drive from Leh. Shey Palace originally housed the Ladakh Royal family before they moved to Leh in the 17th century. A few kilometres to the east is the remarkable Tikse monastery perched on the summit of a sugarloaf mountain, first established by the Dalai’s Lama’s Gelukpa order from Tibet in the 15th century. We also visit the more remote Matho monastery on the far side of the Indus valley that will afford invaluable insights as to how the monks conduct their day to day monastic routine. Returning to Leh we meet representatives of the Snow Leopard Conservancy (SLC Ladakh) and appreciate the fine work that they are undertaking to help protect the endangered snow leopard. Overnight Omisala Hotel, Leh

Meals:  B,L,D

In the morning we drive to the small and beautifully located Hemis Shukpachan where we visit our friends and gain further appreciation of rural communities far removed from regular tourist itineraries. Founded in the 10th century the monastery is one of the largest and oldest in Ladakh and includes a cave inside the main Assembly Hall that is said to be where the Buddhist sage Naropa meditated. Late afternoon we return to Alchi. Overnight Zimskhan Holiday Home, Alchi.

Our comfortable camp comprises spacious double tents with attached bathrooms. During the day we take short camel rides to explore the dunes and settlements where the people eke out a living tending their animals that graze on the sparse vegetation. At night there is the promise of a campfire with local dancers and musicians while we sit under a canopy of stars that illuminate the night sky. Overnight Desert Camp
