Lake Toba is a wonderful lake, where the amiable Christian Batak people reside. Everywhere you will be welcomed with a chorus of “horas” (welcome) to greet you at every turn. Danau Toba is the largest lake in South-east Asia; covering a massive 1707 sq km. Samosir is located in the middle and almost as big as Singapore. The Bataks were among the most warlike peoples in Sumatra. Today there are more than six million Bataks, divided into six main linguistic groups. The majority of today’s Bataks are Protestant Christians, although many still practise elements of animist belief.
