Trip highlights

  • Explore Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park
  • View the largest sand dunes in Mongolia at Khongoriin Els
  • Experience a camel ride with local nomads
  • Stay in traditional Ger camps and experience the Mongolian way of life

The world famous Gobi Desert is an astonishing region blessed with true remoteness and rugged beauty. We explore the impressive Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park, named for the mountain range which flanks the eastern half of the park. It is also home to the largest sand dunes in Mongolia at Khongoriin Els. Due to the sound the dunes make on a windy day they are known as the 'singing dunes'. We experience this region on a series of day walks, jeep rides and a camel trek with local nomads, whilst staying in traditional 'Ger' camps with Mongolian families.

This morning, you will meet your guide who will accompany you to the airport for a flight to Dalanzadgad, the centre of South Gobi province. The flight, which takes approximately one and a half hours, your guide will accompany you on the flight. On arrival, your local driver will meet you and take you to a ger camp where you will have lunch. In the afternoon, you will drive to Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park, the largest National Park in Mongolia at nearly 27,000 square kilometres. The park lies on the northern edge of the Gobi desert. Your destination is the Flaming red cliffs at Bayanzag, known for its significance as the location of a series of dinosaur expeditions led by American explorer and naturalist, Roy Chapman Andrews, in the 1920s. The dinosaur skeletons discovered during his expeditions are now kept in the Natural History Museum of America. Late this afternoon, you will return to the camp for dinner and spend your first night in a ger.

After breakfast, we will embark on a drive deep into the Gobi desert to visit the Khongoryn Els sand dunes, also known as the 'Singing Sands'. Although the ride may be bumpy, the incredible desert scenery that awaits you will make it all worth it. From flat stony plains to outcrops of vegetation and rugged rock formations. Keep an eye out for herds of wild antelope racing across the plains. Covering 965km², the Khongoryn Els sand dunes are considered to be some of the most spectacular in Mongolia. In the afternoon, we will explore this surreal landscape by 4WD.

Today is a rest day at the sand dunes. We'll begin with a hike up to the sand hills, followed by a visit to a local family. The highlight of the day will be a delightful camel ride along the 180km long and 15-20m wide sand dunes located in the northern part of the Sevrei mountains. With their gentle gait and slow steady pace, riding these two-humped Bactrian camels is a relatively easy experience. You'll ride on bright, colorful, hand-made saddles that sit between the two humps of the camels. Remember to approach the camels gently and avoid making any wild or sudden movements to avoid upsetting them. After an enjoyable day, you can unwind in the camp and gaze at the mesmerising Mongolian starry sky.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today, we will embark on another 4WD adventure as we drive to Gobi Gurvan Saikhan Mountain and Eagle Valley (Yol Am). Without a doubt, this stunning region is one of the most beautiful areas in Mongolia. Nestled deep within the hills, Yol Am is a haven from the scorching desert heat. Some parts of the valley are constantly shaded from the hot sun, which creates a large ice field that gradually melts away during the summer months. We will take a walk in the valley, with ample time to stop, rest, and enjoy a packed lunch. If we are fortunate, we may spot wild mountain goats jumping high on the cliff walls or large birds of prey soaring high overhead in the sky. As the day comes to a close, we'll celebrate our final night at a nearby Ger camp.

Meals:  B,L,D

After breakfast, we are at leisure until the transfer to the local airport for our flight back to Ulaanbaatar. Note depending on flight schedules, you may not arrive back into the capital until later in the day. If you are planning on leaving Mongolia on this day, please check with our team before ticketing your international flights so we can ensure the flights connect. On arrival in Ulaanbaatar we will be transferred to the centre of town, or your hotel, where the trip concludes.
