Explore the wonderfully laidback Hauraki Rail Trail, just an hour’s drive south of Auckland on our 4 day fully supported cycling tour.

The trail traces one of New Zealand’s oldest railway corridors, dating back to 1898, wandering through the Hauraki Plains, before delving into the flinty Karangahake Gorge, strewn with old gold mining relics.

A day off the bike allows us time to explore both the stunning coastline and the Gorge in more depth before our final day's ride through lush Waikato farmland leads us to the end of our journey in Matamata.

Experience the best trailside highlights, including visits to the townships of Paeroa & Te Aroha. The flexibility of our tour enables an extended stay at the delightful Waihi Beach plus some optional excursions to places of interest along the way.

Your Hauraki Rail Trail Adventure begins with a short tour briefing in Auckland before driving south to Kaiaua on the Shorebird Coast. After a bike fitting and safety talk, it’s an easy, flat, 10km ride to a hide where we check out the area’s precious birdlife. From there, the trail skirts around the Firth of Thames, offering expansive views of coastal wetlands and verdant farmland, with the volcanic Coromandel Ranges as a dramatic backdrop. Lunch at the Buggar café in Pipiroa fuels us for our afternoon’s ride to Thames, crossing the Waihou River along the way before being welcomed by the community arts trail, scattered with sculptures. Tonight we stay at delightful waterfront accommodation just on the edge of town. Cycling Distance: Up to 55km

Meals:  D

Our second day starts with a delicious breakfast at a local café, before retracing our steps to Kopu and heading south on the old railway line through lush farmland. A coffee stop at the Matatoki Cheese factory, gears us up for our next ride through the township of Paeroa, ‘world famous in New Zealand’ for its giant L&P bottle. After lunch, we follow the Ohinemuri River into the dramatic Karangahake Gorge and the most popular section of the Rail Trail. The gorge is a sharply winding canyon, formed by the river. Highlights include the cascading Owharoa waterfall, fascinating gold mining sites and an amazing 1100-metre long railway tunnel. Finishing at Waihi, New Zealand’s ‘Heart of Gold’ we then transfer to Waihi Beach for the next 2 nights. Cycling Distance: Up to 58km

Meals:  B

A well earned day off the saddle today, giving us time to enjoy the fantastic coastline, wander the local townships and get more up close and personal with the Karangahake Gorge. The day starts with a short wander along the gorgeous white sand of Waihi Beach to a beachfront café for breakfast. Tide permitting, we can continue to stretch our legs with a delightful walk from the northern end of Waihi Beach to Orokawa Bay. We then have the opportunity to explore Martha’s Mine on the Pit Rim walkway. If our timing fits the train schedule, we can take the historic Goldfields train back to Waikino in the Karangahake Gorge. The Windows Walk in the Gorge boasts beautiful scenery and spectacular mining remnants including disused gold mining tunnels. Back to the beach for our second night and after a day on our feet we’ll be back in the saddle tomorrow for the final section of the rail trail.

Meals:  B,D

This morning, we’ll head back to Paeroa to pick up the next section of the trail to Te Aroha. Along the way we’ll ride through Waikato farmland with wide-ranging views across the Hauraki Plains. After lunch we embark on the last, and newest, section of the trail through fertile plains, ravines, impressive horse studs, goat farms and groves of scented trees. We finish our journey in the rural town of Matamata, referred to by many today as Hobbiton. After some drinks and nibbles to celebrate new friendships and our completion of the Hauraki Rail Trail, we’ll drive back to Auckland. Cycling Distance: Up to 60km
