Trip highlights

  • Appreciate dramatic landscapes and distinctive Central Otago climate
  • Enjoy the support of your local guide
  • Impressive bridge crossings including the 110m long Manuherikia No.1 Bridge
  • Discovering the local hospitality in the historic towns along the trail

This cycle adventure is a 5-day /4-night guided tour on the Otago Central Rail Trail with four to five hours each day spent cycling. The trail is vehicle-free, has an easy gradient and takes you through amazing scenery, over viaducts and through tunnels. Enjoy the atmosphere of historic hotels for a drink, a meal, and your overnight accommodation. Relax knowing that you have a local experienced tour guide and support vehicle while you are on the trail. Our guides are passionate and knowledgeable about the trail and the area, and this will all add to making this a tour to remember.

The day starts with a 7.45am pickup from your accommodation in Queenstown to travel our Trail Journeys Depot in Clyde. Here you will be fitted with your bikes, briefed on your tour then start your cycling adventures. Between Clyde and Alexandra, the trail passes vineyards and over a wooden trestle bridge, or for the more adventurous, there is the option of riding on the River Track to Alexandra. This track is not technical but does require more confidence and concentration, and adds another 8km to your ride. It is definitely worth it if you have the time and inclination. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Talk to our consultant to arrange a wine tour or a cruise on the Clutha River/Mata Au. For some more riding, there is the 10km first section of the Roxburgh Gorge track to Doctors Point. This follows the Clutha River/Mata Au into the spectacular Roxburgh Gorge. This is a 20km round trip from Alexandra.

Meals:  Nil

The first stop today is at Galloway Station where your guide will have the billy on the boil and home baking ready. Then it is on to the historic, stone Chatto Creek Tavern for lunch before cycling up an easy gradient of Tiger Hill and on to accommodation in Lauder Before dinner, there is the option of a guided trip to the historic gold mining towns of St Bathans and Ophir.

Meals:  B,L,D

The highlight of today's cycle ride is the stunning Poolburn Gorge to Oturehua. The trail passes through two tunnels and two viaducts in a secluded rocky setting with amazing views, before the opening out to the vast expanse of the Ida Valley. This region was made famous by the paintings of Graham Sydney. The trail passes the Idaburn Dam, one of New Zealand’s few outdoor winter curling sites. Before lunch at the Oturehua Tavern is a visit the Hayes Engineering Works and Homestead. Just north of Oturehua is the Golden Progress Mine and then the highest point of the trail, before stopping for the night at Wedderburn. Before your evening meal is a side trip to Naseby to try your hand at curling and look through the old, gold-mining town.

Meals:  B,L,D

The hard work has been done. From Wedderburn the trail is mostly downhill to morning tea in Ranfurly, the Art Deco Capital of Otago, then across the Maniototo Plains to lunch at the Waipiata Tavern. The next section, between Daisybank and Hyde is alongside the Taieri River, crossing the Capburn Bridge, Price’s Creek Viaduct and through the last tunnel to Hyde. Here you will meet with your guide who will transfer the group back to Waipiata to stay for the night.

Meals:  B,L,D

On the way back to Hyde from Waipiata, there is a visit to Macraes Gold Mine. The trail from Hyde passes the site of the 1943 Hyde Rail disaster and on through the wide-open spaces of the Strath Taieri. There will be a morning snack along the way and lunch in Middlemarch. If time allows, we will take you on a brief sightseeing tour around the Middlemarch area before returning to our depot. For those travelling on to Dunedin the shuttle departs at 2.00pm, alternatively return transport to Clyde or Queenstown departing about 1.30pm

Meals:  B,L
