Trip highlights

  • Explore the Pelorus region of Marlborough Sounds where few other people venture
  • Walk the Nydia Track from Kaiuma Bay to Duncan Bay
  • Walk bush tracks at Tawero Point and Wilson Bay Farm for superb vistas of the Pelorus Sounds
  • Enjoy the home comforts of remote private lodges with water frontage
  • Scenic boat transfer within Pelorus Sound
  • Admire the exquisite Emerald Pools at the historic Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve

The Pelorus Sound is one of the many passages in the web of waterways that make up Marlborough Sounds. Two of the more remote and less-visited walking destinations in the region are The Nydia Track and Wilson Bay Farm, both of which form the backbone of this varied and unique guided trip. Nydia Track traverses two saddles and follows the shoreline of Nydia Bay, significant historically for the logging operations based there from the late 1800's to early 1900's. Beautiful native forest of mixed podocarp and beech trees provide a glimpse of how the entire Sounds used to look. Wilson Bay Farm is a 5th generation family sheep farm on a wild peninsula with a network of private walking tracks to explore. Rugged hillscapes offer sweeping views of the Sound and a perfect contrast to the forested Nydia Track. Your packs are transferred each day enabling you to carry only minimal gear. Stay each night in cosy water-front lodges with hearty food, hot showers and a comfortable bed. The peaceful isolation of these properties, which are only accessible by foot or boat, enhances the opportunity to detach from the pace of everyday life.

Make your own way to Havelock, the mussel capital of Marlborough Sounds located roughly halfway between Nelson and Picton. Check-in to your accommodation any time after 2:00pm. Take some time to explore this quiet little village at the head of Pelorus Sound. Visit the local museum, wander along the marina with its flotilla of boats or sample some local produce. Freshly prepared green-lipped mussels are the signature dish and are not to be missed!

Meals:  Nil

The transfer shuttle will collect you from your Havelock accommodation at 8.30am this morning for your road transfer to Kaiuma Bay, the southern trailhead for the Nydia Track. The journey is approximately 45 mins and is mostly on a narrow, winding unsealed road. You will meet your guide for the trip at the Kaiuma Bay jetty for your pre-trip briefing before setting off on the walk. The Nydia Track is a series of old bridle paths linked together, passing through farmland, a variety of native and regenerating forests and tracing the shoreline of Nydia Bay where logging activities occurred from 1876 until 1919. Walk the first part of the track today, through regenerating mixed podocarp and beech forest with giant rimu close by, and gradually ascend the Kaiuma Saddle (387m). This is about halfway for today and is the highest point on this trail. The view is far-reaching and on a clear day it is possible to see the Marlborough region's highest peak, Tapuae-o-Uenuku (2885m) in the Kaikoura Ranges. From here the track is all downhill, crossing several streams and farmland before reaching the shores of Nydia Bay. Your luggage will be waiting for you at the lovely On The Track Lodge, where your guide will leave you for the remainder of the day to bask in its peaceful surroundings.

Meals:  L,D

After breakfast this morning collect your packed lunch and meet up with your guide at the lodge entrance. We continue walking the Nydia Track, following the shoreline along the edge of the bay where saw milling activities once occurred. Turning inland the track then climbs to Nydia Saddle (347m) from where there are lovely views of the many bays of Tennyson Inlet, where the walk concludes today. Cross the saddle and descend to sea level once again, passing through some of the most beautiful native forest on the track including nikau, beech, and tree ferns. Upon reaching Duncan Bay your water taxi will be waiting to transfer you to Wilson Bay through the vast waterways of the Pelorus Sound. Estimated arrival time at The Lodge at Te Rawa is 5:00pm, where your luggage will be waiting for you. Relax and put your feet up, soak in the outdoor bath, or chill out in the bar until your evening meal is served.

Meals:  B,L,D

After a leisurely start to the day, collect your packed lunch and meet your guide at the Te Rawa Lodge cafe to set off on a Wilson Bay Farm exploration. A 10 minute walk around the Bay leads to the gates of Wilson Bay Farm. From here the day's walk is a complete circuit of the property which takes in a large peninsula, Tawero Point. As this is a working farm you may be treated to some sheep mustering along the way or have opportunity to sample a glass of fresh milk. With the waters of the Pelorus Sounds on both sides of the peninsula it is possible to spot dolphins passing by, or maybe even an orca or two if you are lucky. Upon completion of the farm circuit wander back to your accommodation at the Lodge at Te Rawa for a well-deserved rest, delicious evening meal and peaceful night’s sleep.

After breakfasting this morning meet your guide at the Te Rawa Lodge cafe. Transfer by water taxi to Havelock and connect with your road shuttle to the Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve, a drive of approximately one hour passing through historic Canvastown. At the Reserve there is time to explore the Kanuka Picnic Area, from where there are several short walks, before continuing the drive up Maungatapu Road. This area has a dark history and is infamously known for the Maungatapu Murders in 1866 but today it simply leads to the start of the Pelorus Track. This walk follows the Te Hoiere (Pelorus) River for an hour before reaching the Emerald Pools which are true to their name. This is a beautiful place to take a refreshing swim. We then return along the same track for a cafe lunch before transferring back to Havelock where trip arrangements end on arrival at approximately 4:00pm.
