DISCOVERY & CRUISING

ADVENTURE TOURING
These are our least demanding trips. These journeys of discovery & cruises involve little or no extended activity. The itinerary may cover remote areas (with basic facilities) and may involve long travel days on various types of transport. Sightseeing may be conducted on foot and
all participants should be capable of carrying their own luggage from vehicle to hotel rooms. These adventures do not exceed 2500m and rarely involve camping.
These adventures may visit remote areas of the world where facilities are often basic. Many of these trips have some camping or basic lodging. They will often include long journeys, rough roads, sightseeing and optional day walks which may involve up to
5 hours of physical activity.

CHALLENGING
Up to 5 or 6 hours a day at a slow but steady pace
Introductory walks with several moderate stages
Up to 5-7 hours a day at a steady pace. Treks will involve carrying
a day pack and trail conditions will vary between well-defined
to rough trails
 Moderate walks with challenging stages
 Often remote areas; variable
& adverse weather conditions; up to 8 -10 hours a day or more. Be prepared to carry daypack weighing up to 8 kgs,
or in some cases a full
pack up to 20kg
 Between 20 and
60kms a day depending on the terrain, few steep ascents.
Introductory riding with several moderate stages
Between 30 to 80 kms depending on the terrain and may involve some steeper ascents which can be avoided by using the support vehicle.
 Moderate rides with challenging stages
Designed for stronger riders who prefer longer distances and good climbs. Distances range from 50-120kms
per day depending on terrain.
Up to 5 or 6 hours a day at a slow but steady pace
Introductory paddling with several moderate stages
Up to 5 or 7 hours a day at a steady pace.
 Moderate paddling with challenging stages

INTERMEDIATE MOUNTAINEERING

ADVANCED MOUNTAINEERING
Classed as expeditions – involves either extreme trekking and/or basic mountaineering. Expect remote and poorly defined trails in variable weather conditions for up to 12 hours a day (possibly more subject to weather conditions and altitude). This may include a number of
demanding high pass crossings & evacuation may be difficult from remote areas.
Participants should be competent and self sufficient in the outdoors and have experience in multi day trekking at altitude. Prior experience on an entry level mountaineering expedition is highly recommended. The terrain will involve low
to moderate angle snow slopes and travelling on crevassed glaciers.
These are our most challenging expeditions. Most are participatory expeditions & involve load carrying, setting up of camps, cooking and campcraft. Some of these expeditions also involve “technical” climbing and are for experienced alpine climbers/mountaineers only. Technical expeditions involve steep climbing
at high altitude (including rock climbing).
 > excellent fitness & health > very active lifestyle Suitable for first time mountaineers, previous altitude
experience preferable but not essential, comfortable in adverse weather conditions.
 > excellent fitness & health > very active lifestyle Multi-day altitude trekking experience essential,
experience using ice axe and crampons is preferred but not essential.
 > excellent fitness and health > very active lifestyle Clients must have prior mountaineering experience.
Participation is subject to acceptance by one of our high altitude mountaineering guides.
Our 10 level grading system provides the physical levels needed for our mountaineering trips. Below are the four technical levels, with one ice axe being the least technical.
1• BASIC Conditions relatively straight- forward – not technically difficult. Expect generally low angled slopes, no prolonged steep or exposed sections & glacier travel where participants are roped together. May require abseiling in short sections.
2 • INTERMEDIATE Conditions variable with generally low angled slopes, with some sections of moderately steep snow or easy rock where ropes are required. Will involve some basic rock climbing and abseiling.
3 • DIFFICULT Conditions are challenging involving steep and exposed snow and ice slopes with sections of rock climbing. Some sections involve abseiling
and belaying.
4 • EXTREME A more serious and technical undertaking involving long and exposed climbing on snow, rock and ice. Competent rope work, efficiency
of movement and good technical skills are required.
