Trip highlights

  • Canoe the languid tropical waters of the Katherine river
  • Drift past river banks lined with rocky escarpments and sandy beaches
  • Camp on sandy riverbanks and enjoy the splendid isolation
  • Spend your evenings sleeping under a blanket of stars

The tropical Katherine River has long been appreciated by our travellers as a fantastic way to experience the Top End wilderness. For over 25 years, adventurers have paddled down the crystal rapids and pandanus channels on our classic Top End itineraries. This pioneering paddling adventure is a worthwhile experience on its own, or as a natural extension to any of our amazing Northern Territory itineraries. Beginning in Katherine, transfer by 4WD vehicle to the put-in location and begin our journey downstream. The spring-fed waters keep flowing throughout the dry season, allowing you to enjoy a unique 3 day paddling excursion travelling between 40 and 55 kilometres downstream. You'll camp on sandy riverbanks and enjoy the splendid isolation far removed from the more popular attractions.

Trip Code: KRC

Wake to a dawn chorus of bird life in the brisk morning air. There is time for an early morning swim. After a hearty cooked breakfast, we pack-up camp and continue paddling down-stream. As we get further from immediate civilisation, the feel of remoteness sets in. The river continues to change from shady paperbark forests to lush pandanus channels, through open sections, surrounded by the river woods and over some small sparkling rapids which are fun and easy to negotiate. At the end of this satisfying day, you will find yourself in a bit of a routine and will have camp set-up quickly. Leaving yourself enough time to explore, relax, chat, check-out some animal tracks or just ‘find yourself’. Distance covered approx 20km

Meals:  B,L,D
