With over 20 years experience offering walking tours in Japan, our hikes take outdoor enthusiasts along iconic and less crowded trails, beyond Mount Fuji.

From the Kii Hanto muntains following the sacred Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail to the historic Nakasendo Way linking Kyoto and Tokyo, you discover Japan’s wilderness and living heritage step by step. Our adventures are designed to tread lightly while taking you deeper into the landscapes and traditions that define this remarkable country.

Whether you have a few days or several weeks, you can choose a self-guided journey with the reassurance of expert planning behind the scenes, or join a fully supported guided walk with like-minded travellers. However you choose to explore, you will be walking with purpose on trails that reveal a more authentic side of Japan.

Kumano Kodo Hiking Trail

Hike ancient cobblestone pilgrimage routes through the sacred forested mountains of UNESCO-listed Kii Hanto. For centuries, these trails have led to the three Grand Shrines of Kumano, Yoshino and Omine, Kumano Sanzan and Koyasan, and were once walked by Emperors travelling between the capitals of Nara and Kyoto.

Following the revered Nakahechi Trail to Hongu Shrine, you immerse yourself in Japan’s spiritual and cultural heritage. Walk beneath towering cedar forests, through lush valleys, past waterfalls and restorative hot springs before reaching Kumano Nachi Taisha on Nachi Mountain. If you have also walked the Camino de Santiago, you may be eligible to receive the Dual Pilgrim badge and certificate.

The Nakasendo Way

Walk one of Japan’s most atmospheric historic routes linking the former imperial capital of Kyoto with Edo, now Tokyo. This self-guided journey follows forested mountain paths through the heart of Honshu, connecting preserved post towns in the picturesque Kiso Valley and the alpine retreat of Karuizawa.

As you pass through traditional villages and beautifully restored inns, you gain insight into Japan’s Edo-period history and rural life. The classic walk is five days, with shorter options available if time is limited. A memorable highlight is unwinding in the thermal waters of a traditional onsen ryokan after a rewarding day on the trail.

Hiking Coastal Trails in Japan

Japan’s mountains may steal the spotlight, but its coastline tells a different story, one shaped by salt air, fishing villages, forested headlands and centuries of quiet resilience. Walking here reveals a more reflective side of the country, where ocean horizons replace alpine peaks and small coastal communities welcome you into daily life shaped by the sea.

If you are ready to experience Japan beyond the neon lights and mountain skylines, these coastal trails offer space to breathe, walk and connect more deeply with place. Our favourite journeys explore the wild Pacific shores of the Michinoku Coastal Trail in Tohoku, the historic Hakone Hachiri Trail and dramatic Izu Peninsula closer to Tokyo, and sections of the Shikoku Pilgrim route, where temple paths, coastal villages and ocean views combine in one deeply rewarding walking experience.

Climb Mount Daimonji & Walk Dorogawa

If you would like to combine panoramic city views with secluded mountain village walks, Backroads of Japan brings both together in one rewarding journey. Step beyond Kyoto’s busy streets and climb Mount Daimonji for sweeping views across the Kyoto Basin, with Osaka visible in the distance on a clear day. Prefer a gentler option? Follow the peaceful Philosophers’ Path at ground level instead.

Further south, walk the riverside trails and forested passes of Dorogawa, a traditional onsen town known for its pure spring water and centuries-old herbal traditions. Visit Ryusen-ji Temple and the waterfall where pilgrims cleanse before ascending sacred Mount Omine, then ease into the restorative waters of your ryokan onsen after a fulfilling day on the trail.
