Why Book With Us

Hike one of Japan’s most storied ancient routes, the Nakasendo Way, a historic trail through the heart of the central mountains that once linked Kyoto and Edo (modern-day Tokyo). This self-guided adventure is designed for experienced travellers who seek the freedom to explore at their own pace, while having all logistics seamlessly arranged.

The Nakasendo Way weaves through charming Edo-period post towns, serene mountain trails, and quiet village paths, offering a glimpse into Japan’s feudal past. Walk through beautiful forests, alongside rice paddies, and across gently rolling terrain, passing well-preserved towns like Magome and Tsumago, where travellers are transported back in time.

A self-guided walk allows you to enjoy the journey on your own terms. Set your own rhythm, take breaks when you choose, and immerse yourself fully in the landscapes and culture around you. Without the constraints of a group itinerary, you can explore hidden corners, enjoy spontaneous encounters with locals, and experience a deeper connection with the trail.

Each night, stay in traditional Minshuku guesthouses, where you’ll experience warm Japanese hospitality, home-cooked regional cuisine, and the chance to unwind in a peaceful setting. Your luggage is transferred between accommodations, allowing you to walk with only a light daypack.

Spring (March to May) is the most magical time to walk, with cherry blossoms lining the trail and mild temperatures perfect for hiking. Summer (June to August) brings lush green forests and vibrant festivals in the villages, while autumn (September to November) transforms the landscape with fiery red and golden hues. Each season offers a unique way to experience the Nakasendo Way’s beauty.

With our decades of experience crafting immersive walking experiences in Japan, we take care of the details, from handpicked accommodations and comprehensive route notes to luggage transfers and 24/7 local support. Our expert planning ensures you experience the Nakasendo Way’s rich history, natural beauty, and authentic hospitality, all without the stress of logistics.

The longest day on the Nakasendo Way trail is a beautiful and varied hike from Tsumago to Nojiri. Or perhaps you would prefer to choose the shorter alternative to Nagiso instead. The trail travels through small valleys and past forests of bamboo and Japanese cedar, through some of the least-developed scenery on the tour. After your walk you continue by train to Kiso-Fukushima (tickets provided). Tonight enjoy staying at a lovely hot-spring ryokan in the Kiso-Fukusima area. For accommodations on the outskirts of the town a complimentary transfer from the station is provided by the Ryokan. The Ryokan has lovely hot-spring baths. We supply train tickets for the short journey from Kiso-Fukushima to Yabuhara, the starting point for the hike over the Torii Pass to Narai. Explore this atmospheric village before you continue on today’s journey to the small town of KisoHirasawa, famous for its lacquerware. There are many small shops selling beautifully crafted tableware and furniture. From Kiso-Hirasawa, transfer by train to the castle town of Matsumoto for your overnight stay. When you are finished in Matsumoto, you will travel by train to your final stop for your onward journey to Karuizawa or Komoro for your final overnight stay. Both locations have lovely inns with a real sense of history and fine Japanese baths. Arrive at your accommodation in time for a wonderful dinner featuring local produce. After breakfast, your final walk on the Nakasendo Trail is from Karuizawa to Yokokawa. Leaving Karuizawa, the trail takes you over the Usui-toge Pass and down a gentle descent along one of the most beautiful sections of the Nakasendo, and certainly the least-developed. From Yokokawa, board the local train to Takasaki and change there for your ride on the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) to Tokyo. The train journey takes around two hours and you will arrive in Tokyo in the late afternoon or early evening. Walking distance: 16.7km / 10 miles Elevation gain: 372m / 1220 feet of ascent and 862m / 2828 feet of descent Time required: ~6hrs NOTE - The walk can be shortened by 3.3km / 2 miles by a taxi ride at the start of the day (payable direct at your own cost).
