Trip highlights

  • Walk to one of the highest waterfalls in the world, the Gocta Falls
  • Discover the unrestored pre-Inca ruins of the Kuelap fortress
  • Journey to the Sarcophagi of Karajia
  • Spot wildlife and go searching for woolly monkeys, sloth and the magnificent Andean Cock-of-the-Rock
  • Marvel at the stalactites and stalagmites of Quiocta Cave
  • Explore the remarkable Leymebamba Museum

This memorable touring adventure explores an off-the-beat-track region of northern Peru. From Gocta we walk to the spectacular Gocta falls, the highest in Peru. Next we venture to the striking sarcophagi of Karajia and continue on to visit the Quiocta Cave. Here we explore five different chambers with stalactites, stalagmites and burial remains. Making our way to the village of Tingo, we take the cable car to the Kuelap fortress. This famed citadel, centre piece of the Pre-Incan Chachapoyas culture and one of the most impressive buildings anywhere in the Andes, is next on the agenda. We will make our way to Leymebamba, a fabulous museum and a short walk to magnificent views and historic tombs. The archaeological wonders and ancient history along with beautiful landscapes will captivate you on this travel adventure.

You will be met at the Jaen airport and transferred to your accommodation near Chachapoyas. The drive takes approximately 3-3.5 hours. If available we will be staying at the beautiful Gocta Lodge with stunning views of the Gocta Falls and surrounding mountains. Overnight Gocta Lodge or similar.

Meals:  Nil

We will start our walk to Gocta Waterfall from the hotel. The waterfall, though known about for many years, was only recently measured in 2006 and found to be one of the highest in the world. The trek goes along the side a valley through sugar cane fields and into a forest that is home to the yellow-tailed woolly monkey, sloth and the magnificent cock-of-the-rock. With glimpses of the waterfall along the way we arrive at the base of the highest fall after approximately 2 hours. Those brave enough may want a dip in the pool at the base. Later we will return to the hotel. Overnight Gocta Lodge or similar.

Meals:  B,L

After breakfast we will drive down to Utcubamba and cross over to the neighbouring Province of Luya. From the village of Luya we drive on to the village of Cruz Pata, where a short walk (approx. 45min) takes us down to Karajia. These striking sarcophagi, sculptured like humans have become an icon of the area. For 750 years they have looked towards the rising sun and undoubtedly are the resting place for some elite members of Chachapoya warriors. Returning to our transport we drive back down to Luya and on to the neighbouring village of Lamud. Here we register with the community so we can visit the Quiocta Cave. We drive 30mins up to the point where a short walk leads us down to Quiocta. Quiocta can be muddy. There are five different chambers with stalactites and stalagmites and some remains of burials. We return to our transport and then drive to Chachapoyas for overnight (approx. 2 hours). Overnight Xalca or similar.

Meals:  B,L

Today one of the highlights of this trip awaits us. After breakfast we will journey to the village of Tingo (approx. 60 mins) and take the cable car to Kuelap. The cable car glides us across a steep valley to arrive at the Kuelap ticket office. A 1km walk leads us up to this massive mountain citadel. The towering walls and hundreds of roundhouses capped by the cloud forest at 3,000 meters (9,900 feet) above sea level always amaze not only first time visitors. We'll explore the many ceremonial constructions and brilliant layout as a group, with plenty of opportunities to wander on you own. We then return by cable car to Tingo for lunch and then our transport takes us on to the village of Leymebamba (60 mins) for the night. Overnight Casona Leymebamba or similar.

Meals:  B,L

In the morning we visit the fabulous community museum that houses 219 mummies and 2000 other artefacts recovered in 1997 from cliff tombs that overlook the nearby Lake of the Condors. The artefacts of wood sculptures, textiles, ceramics and decorated gourds are in a remarkable state of preservation. After our visit, we drive to Yerbabuena (30 mins) and then take a side road up to the village of San Bartolo. From the village we start our walk (approx. 50 mins) for a close up view of a spectacularly colourful cliff tomb. This extremely photogenic site is perched on a yellow cliff and the tombs are like mini houses with red pictographs dating back to 1200 AD. From here we will return to San Bartolo and we drive on to Cocachimba and Gocta for your last night, stopping for lunch along the way. Overnight Gocta Lodge or similar.

Meals:  B,L
