Australia: Indigenous Literacy Project  |  Australia

The aim of this project is to fund 800 culturally relevant books into the hands of school children in remote Indigenous Communities across Australia. For every AUD$10 donated, the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) can get a culturally relevant book into the hands of a child in a remote Community.

In remote Communities across Australia there is often no infrastructure such as libraries or bookstores. Access to reading material is extremely limited and this impacts the achievements of Indigenous children.

It is ILF's ambition to provide remote Indigenous Communities with the literacy resources they request to support their aspirations for Community and Culture. Through collaborative investment in Community and meaningful strategic partnerships, the ILF supports sustainable and positive change in Indigenous literacy through the supply of books and a focus on the publication of First Nations content. ILF aims to advocate and build awareness among the wider Australian population of the strengths, knowledges and wisdoms held within remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities.

In 2024, the ILF aims to -

> gift 136,800 culturally relevant books into 430 remote Communities through their Book Supply program.

> strengthen relationships with the 107 playgroups they're working with through their Book Buzz program.

> and publish 30 books representing 21 languages.

The books are part of a curate list agreed on with Community members and is updated every year. Over 50% of these books will have Indigenous content (either authors or illustrators) which is very important as children will only engage with stories that they see themselves in.
