For many, the Kokoda Track is a fitting reminder of the Australian Army's heroic battles in 1942 to defend Port Moresby, in extraordinary conditions, from the advancing forces of the Japanese. In the company of our expert guide, we trek across the geographical heart of Papua New Guinea following trails from the tropical rainforests to the rarified climes of the Owen Stanley Ranges. At night we stay in secluded jungle camps close to traditional villages in some of the most remote regions of PNG. We take our time, allowing plenty of opportunity to embrace the history and local culture as well as meet the physical demands of this rugged track. It takes nine days to cover the 96km trail - offering tremendous rewards and a feeling of accomplishment as we complete the trek between the township of Kokoda and the highlands.

Trip Code: SOG9151

Welcome to Papua New Guinea—truly one of the world’s last great frontiers. You’ve arrived in a land where ancient traditions meet breathtaking natural beauty, where mountains rise steeply from the jungle and vibrant cultures thrive in every valley, village and island. In the late afternoon there will be a trek briefing held by your leader and your camping gear will be distributed. Afterwards we'll will head out to dinner (at your own expense) and discuss the adventure ahead. Overnight: Airways Hotel (or similar) NOTE: Recommended group flight TBC

Meals:  Nil

This morning, we transfer to the Domestic Airport for our short flight to Popondetta—a scenic journey of around 30 minutes soaring over the dramatic Owen Stanley Range. On arrival, we meet our local trekking crew, the heart of our Kokoda adventure, and begin our drive toward the trailhead. The journey offers plenty of chances to stretch your legs and take in the lush surroundings with rest and photo stops along the way. Upon reaching Kokoda, we’ll visit the small but powerful Kokoda Museum (suject to opening hours), a moving introduction to the history and significance of the track we’re about to walk. From here, the trek begins in earnest, with our first steps taking us from Kokoda Station to the welcoming village of Hoi. As we walk, our experienced porters are by your side—not just to assist with the physical demands of the trail, but to enrich your journey with local knowledge, good humour, and guidance on staying hydrated in the humid conditions. Approx Walking time/distance: 2-3hrs / 7.5km; Ascent: 151m, Descent: 51m.

Meals:  L,D

Our first full day on the trail takes us deep into the heart of the jungle, where thick choko vines stretch high into the canopy, wrapping the forest in a living tapestry of green. As we ascend steadily into the Owen Stanley Range, the air cools slightly and the sense of history grows ever more tangible. Our destination is the poignant Isurava Village and Battlefield, a site of immense historical and emotional significance. Here, surrounded by misty ridgelines and towering trees, we pause for a moment’s silence—honouring not only the Australian soldiers who fought and fell during the Kokoda campaign, but also the remarkable Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels whose courage and compassion left an enduring legacy. Once reclaimed by jungle, the battlefield has since been respectfully cleared and transformed into a serene memorial space. Among its powerful features is Bruce Kingsbury VC’s rock, marking the site where he performed an act of valour that earned him the Victoria Cross. Nearby, a small but moving war museum offers a chance to further connect with the stories of the campaign (entry at own expense, if open). As the day winds down, we take a short, final walk to our campsite at Con’s/Surgeon’s Rock. It’s a quiet place to reflect on the history underfoot and the journey that still lies ahead. Approx Walking time/distance: 7-8hrs / 11.3km; Ascent: 1273m, Descent: 376m.

Meals:  B,L,D

We rise early this morning, beginning the day with a moving service at Con’s/Surgeon’s Rock—an intimate moment to honour the sacrifices made on these slopes, in a place steeped in wartime history and quiet reverence. From here, the trek becomes more demanding as we tackle our first steep descent. The trail can be slippery, particularly if there’s been rain, so care is taken as we navigate down toward the valley floor. A creek crossing offers a change of pace before we begin a steady uphill climb towards Eora Creek, where tonight’s campsite awaits. Set beside a clear, rushing stream surrounded by forest, Eora Creek is often cited by trekkers as their favourite campsite on the entire track—and it's easy to see why. The soothing sound of water, the sheltering canopy, and the chance to dip into the cool creek create a moment of genuine peace and rejuvenation. It may be chilly, but the water is perfect for easing sore muscles after a rewarding day’s hike. Approx Walking time/distance: 5-6hrs / 7km; Ascent: 403m, Descent: 441m.

Meals:  B,L,D

We’re up early today for one of the most physically demanding yet deeply rewarding sections of the Kokoda Track. This is a big day—both in distance and elevation—as we ascend to the highest point along the trail. The air begins to thin, the jungle takes on a cooler tone, and the terrain becomes more rugged. As we move steadily upward, we pass a series of reminders of the 1942 campaign—Australian weapon pits still visible in the undergrowth. Our route includes rest stops at Templeton’s Crossing and Dump 1, both steeped in wartime significance, offering time to catch our breath and reflect. After lunch, the climb continues as we ascend the shoulder of Mt Bellamy, eventually reaching the breathtaking Kokoda Gap at 2,240 metres. The descent to Camp 1900 is a welcome reprieve, and the trail leads us to a quiet campsite nestled near a cool mountain stream—perfect for a refreshing rinse after the long climb. Approx Walking time/distance: 9-10hrs / 14.4km; Ascent: 1194m, Descent: 754m.

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning’s trek takes us to the remote village of Naduri. The trail can become very slippery after rain, so we take care with each step. From Naduri, we descend steeply before beginning a challenging climb up to Efogi. There’s sometimes a chance for a quick swim in the creek here, a welcome break if conditions allow. After lunch, we face another steady ascent along a narrow track with steep edges. The climb to Brigade Hill is exposed, so sunscreen is essential. Often shrouded in mist, Brigade Hill has a quiet, eerie atmosphere and is one of the more memorable campsites on the track. Approx Walking time/distance: 8-9hrs / 13.1km; Ascent: 842m, Descent: 1335m.

Meals:  B,L,D

The day begins with a moving dawn service before we descend the ridge toward Menari. Along the way, we pause at a lookout offering sweeping views of the valley below, where your guide will share insight into the Japanese positions held here during the campaign. At Menari, we take a break, and if timing allows, local schoolchildren may gather to perform a short cultural presentation. Trekkers are welcome to bring along educational supplies or stationery as gifts for the Menari School. From here, we tackle a steep and muddy section known as ‘The Wall’, a challenging climb and descent tangled with tree roots. After a well-earned lunch at Agulogo, we cross the Brown River—often a highlight depending on water levels—before continuing along swampy terrain that winds alongside the Naoro River. The day ends with a final steep ascent to New Nauro Village, our campsite for the night. Situated partway up the nine false peaks, this is considered one of the most comfortable campsites along the track. Approx Walking time/distance: 8-9hrs / 15.9km; Ascent: 840m, Descent: 1112m.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today is one of the more demanding sections of the track, beginning with a steady climb up the ridge, where the series of nine false peaks can test your resolve. But with support from your group and guides, you’ll soon reach the top. From there, we descend to the Japanese ladder, a good spot to pause for lunch before removing boots to cross the clear waters of Ofi Creek—an ideal place for a refreshing wash. The trail then leads us up and over Ioribaiwa Ridge, descending to the post-war village below. This site marks the furthest point reached by the Japanese forces before their eventual withdrawal, and your guide will share the significance of the battles that took place here. If the weather is clear, the sunset from camp is a real highlight, and it’s not uncommon to see our porters enjoying a game of football on the open grassy field. Approx Walking time/distance: 6-7hrs / 11.9km; Ascent: 600m, Descent: 953m.

Meals:  B,L,D

We set off early this morning, descending through Dump 44 and following the path alongside Ua-Ule Creek. This section of the trail is alive with birdlife, and if we're lucky, we may spot the vibrant Bird of Paradise. Over the course of the morning, we cross the creek at least 17 times, so river shoes or sandals are essential for comfort and safety. After a short break for morning tea, we begin the final major ascent of the trek—Imita Ridge. This climb is steep and sustained, so a steady pace is important. At the summit, we regroup for a photo and briefing before descending to our final campsite at Imita Base, also known as Goodwater. This is a memorable place to spend our last night on the track. A clear, cool swimming hole offers the perfect chance to rinse off and relax. In the evening, we come together with our porter team for a well-earned celebration—an opportunity to reflect on the journey, share stories, and thank the local crew before many of them return to their home villages after tomorrow’s finish at Owers Corner. Approx Walking time/distance: 5-6hrs / 9.1km; Ascent: 593m, Descent: 738m.

Meals:  B,L,D

Fatigued but driven by the finish line, the group begins the final stretch this morning with a steady hike to Goldie Creek, where we pause for a well-earned rest. From here, it's the last climb to Owers Corner—a moment that brings cheers, photos, and heartfelt celebrations as we pass through the iconic gates marking the end of the Kokoda Track. There’s time to explore the memorials and reflect on the incredible journey before we board our transport back to Port Moresby. Along the way, we make brief stops at Macdonald’s Corner, Sogeri Junction, Rouna Falls, and the Bomana War Cemetery—each offering a final connection to the history and landscape we’ve travelled through. In the evening, we gather for a celebratory meal (at own expense), sharing stories and highlights from the past days on the trail. Before your international flight, please ensure all trekking gear is thoroughly cleaned to meet biosecurity requirements and avoid any delays at customs. Approx Walking time/distance: 2-3hrs / 6.2km; Ascent: 339m, Descent: 90m.

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport by the hotel’s courtesy shuttle for your onward flight. As you bid farewell to this captivating land, we hope you leave with memories of vibrant cultures, dramatic landscapes, and the warmth of its people. NOTE: Recommended group flight TBC
