  • Promote hygiene education by building a handwashing station to encourage proper hygiene practices among students and the broader school community.
  • Protect the school environment by constructing a boundary to prevent livestock from entering and damaging the grounds, ensuring a more secure and organized learning space.
  • Provide a meaningful student engagement experience, giving Somerville House students the opportunity to contribute directly to community development while learning about global health, education, and infrastructure challenges.
  • Foster collaboration between students and the local community, ensuring that the work supports long-term benefits and community ownership.

Improving Sanitation and Education at Thung Ang School is a collaborative initiative between Somerville House and World Expeditions Schools, designed to support health, hygiene, and educational access for students in Hang Kia, Vietnam. Through this hands-on service project, students will help construct essential infrastructure at Thung Ang School, including toilets, a handwashing station, and a secure boundary to protect the grounds. These upgrades will provide safer, cleaner facilities—particularly benefiting girls—by reducing illness, improving attendance, and fostering better hygiene practices. Together with the local community, the project aims to create a lasting impact on student well-being and educational outcomes.

Clean Water And Sanitation:  Clean, accessible water for all is an essential part of the world we want to live in.

Outcomes

Once completed, the new toilets and handwashing area will greatly improve the health and education of the students, particularly girls. The proper sanitation facilities will reduce the risk of illness, improve hygiene, and keep students in school. The handwashing area will also allow for better hygiene education, supporting the development of healthier habits among students.

The new facilities will have a particularly positive impact on female students, as the availability of clean and private toilets will help ensure that girls can attend school, especially during menstruation. This will lead to increased school attendance and better educational outcomes.

Furthermore, the project will serve as a model of good sanitation practices, inspiring families in the community to build and maintain their own hygienic toilets.
