Preserve the myths, legends, and language of the indigenous Kalinago people

Many aspects of Kalinago heritage and culture including language have been lost. Most young Kalinago do not know the original indigenous language and much of their culture.

Natari Adaiah Sanford is a young girl from the indigenous community of the Kalinago Territory in the Commonwealth of Dominica. Adaiah has always been a storyteller, and her parents recall that from a very young age she would cut strips of paper and stick them into play books from which she would tell her imaginary stories.

Adaiah's first publication was titled “The beginners Guide to the Kalinago Language” and helped young Kalinago students between the ages of 5 and 10 to learn the Kalinago language at school.

Adaiah’s second book the “The Legend of the Spirit Serpent” was the result of a short story competition she participated in and won. The story speaks to the legend of the L’escalier Tete Chien, a popular tourist site in the Kalinago Territory. Translated to mean snake head staircase, L’escalier Tete Chien is a lava vein that disappears into the ocean from the land, and it is a sacred Kalinago site. The book provides a captivating and motivating story of an encounter of a young Kalinago girl with the huge serpent, which is the protector of the Kalinago Tribe.

This Regenerative 2030 project is raising funds to print 200 copies of the book so that they can be made available for use in schools within the Kalinago Territory and elsewhere in Dominica.

The story of the legend will develop an awareness and appreciation of the cultural practices of our island's indigenous people and their struggles for the preservation of our country's natural environment and social dynamics.

Motivate young people to write and develop into aspiring authors with the Kalinago community and Dominica.
