Overview

Bhutan's culture is best understood on foot. This journey pairs guided cultural touring with a varied series of day walks, so you meet the country through its monasteries, farming valleys and village trails rather than just watching it roll past a vehicle window.

Begin in the Paro Valley and cross the Chele La, the highest motorable pass in Bhutan, into the remote Haa Valley. From here, walk to Kila Gompa, a cliffside nunnery with views of Jomolhari (7,326m / 24,035ft). Its name means "mountain of the goddess", and it is revered as the home of Jomo, a protective deity believed to watch over the land and its people. Continue to the glacial Gangtey Valley, where black-necked cranes arrive to winter from November to February, then into central Bhutan. Day hikes through bamboo and pine forest lead to viewpoints over wetlands and valleys, and in Bumthang you explore temple-dotted valleys at the spiritual heart of the country. In spring, rhododendron and magnolia flower along the trails.

The journey returns west over the Dochu La to Punakha Dzong and on to Thimphu, where you walk to Cheri Monastery and visit a school keeping traditional painting alive. A night in a farmstay adds a home-cooked side of Bhutanese life. The trip finishes with the hike to Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) Monastery, a steady uphill walk that rewards every step.

All of this comes with an English-speaking local guide who shares the stories behind Bhutan's traditions, and without the commitment of a multi-day trek.

Itinerary

Join Paro. After clearing customs and immigration, you are met by your World Expeditions representative and group leader. There is time to freshen up and enjoy lunch before setting out on a short acclimatisation hike. This afternoon you hike to Zuri Dzong (2,600m / 8,530ft), a scenic hilltop fortress overlooking the Paro Valley, beginning above the National Museum and ending at the Paro Dzong festival ground. This gentle hike provides a good introduction to Bhutan's landscapes while helping the body begin adjusting to the altitude. After returning from the walk, you check into your hotel where a trip briefing is held to discuss the journey ahead. In the evening you gather for a welcome dinner. Altitude: 2,600m / 8,530ft Walking time: 2 hrs Accommodation: Hotel Drukchen Paro or similar

Meals: B,L,D

After breakfast, you set off on the scenic drive to Gangtey, winding through forested mountains and traditional Bhutanese countryside. As you near the Phobjikha Valley the road opens onto broad grasslands dotted with dwarf bamboo thickets, and your guide points out the black-necked cranes if the season is right, since the valley is one of their key wintering grounds. You stop at the Black-necked Crane Information Centre to learn about the conservation work underway in the valley, then continue on to your hotel for the night. Accommodation: Hotel Dewachen Gangtey

Meals: B,L,D

After breakfast we drive to Gangtey Monastery, situated on a forested ridge overlooking the broad expanse of the Phobjikha Valley. This important monastery belongs to the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism and offers wide views across the wetlands and surrounding mountains. Each winter the valley becomes the seasonal home of the endangered black-necked cranes, which are known to circle the monastery before descending into the valley. In late February they begin their remarkable return migration to the Tibetan Plateau. From the monastery we begin a scenic hike starting near the mani stone wall and descending through forests of pine and bamboo. The trail offers sweeping views across the wetlands of Phobjikha before finishing at Khewa Lhakhang, a small temple nestled within the valley. Walking time: 2 hrs Accommodation: Hotel Dewachen Gangtey or similar

Meals: B,L,D

Today we travel east toward Bumthang, crossing the Pele La Pass (3,420m / 11,220ft) in the Black Mountain Range before descending toward Trongsa. Along the way we stop at Chendebji Chorten, an 18th-century stupa built to subdue harmful spirits and modelled after Nepal's Swayambhunath Stupa. Upon reaching Trongsa, the ancestral home of Bhutan's ruling dynasty, we stop for lunch before visiting the Ta Dzong Museum, which houses historical artefacts associated with Bhutan's royal family and the country's history. Continuing onward, we travel to Bumthang, home to some of Bhutan's oldest temples and monasteries. En route we stop at Zungney village, known for its traditional weaving of yathra, the brightly coloured woollen textiles unique to the region. Here we visit a small workshop where local artisans produce these fabrics using traditional techniques. Accommodation: Rinchenling Lodge Bumthang

Meals: B,L,D

The day begins with a walk on foot through the Bumthang valley, starting at Jambay Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest temples, built in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo on the same day as Kyichu Lhakhang in Paro. The trail continues to Kurjey Lhakhang, closely associated with Guru Rinpoche, Tamshing Lhakhang, founded in the 16th century by Pema Lingpa, and Kenchosum Lhakhang, each carrying its own layer of Bhutanese religious history. In the afternoon the walk ends at the Swiss Cheese Factory, where cheese-making techniques introduced by Swiss specialists are still used today, and you can sample local cheeses and Red Panda beer before the short transfer to your lodge for the night. Accommodation: Rinchenling Lodge, Bumthang

Meals: B,L,D

Today you explore the remote Tang Valley, the most secluded of the four valleys that make up the Bumthang region. Compared with the valleys below, Tang has less agricultural land, though where the soil is fertile the landscapes form pastoral scenes. This valley is also historically significant as the birthplace of Terton Pema Lingpa, the revered Buddhist master and treasure revealer who discovered many sacred teachings believed to have been hidden by Guru Rinpoche. Local communities here traditionally raise sheep and, at higher elevations, yak herds. During the morning you visit the Ogyencholing Museum, a restored 19th-century manor house that offers a glimpse into the lifestyle and traditions of a former local governor, displaying artefacts, household objects and historical items that illustrate daily life in Bhutan's past. In the afternoon you follow an ancient trading trail once used by local merchants travelling through the valley, crossing Baetely La Pass (3,110m / 10,236ft) before descending to the Kharchu Dratsang Monastery, where your vehicle meets you for the return drive to the hotel. Accommodation: Rinchenling Lodge, Bumthang

Meals: B,L,D

Today you journey west to the warmer valley of Punakha through forested hills and rural Bhutanese countryside. En route you stop at the village of Lobesa, from where a short walk through farmland leads to Chimi Lhakhang, the revered fertility temple built in 1499. The temple is dedicated to the famous Buddhist master Drukpa Kunley, also known as the Divine Madman, whose unconventional teachings remain an important part of Bhutanese spiritual tradition. You arrive in Punakha and settle into your accommodation for the night. Accommodation: Meri Puensum Resort Punakha

Meals: B,L,D

After breakfast, you drive toward Thimphu, Bhutan's capital, stopping en route to visit Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan's most impressive fortress monasteries. Situated at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (female) rivers, the dzong features grand courtyards, sacred temples and administrative halls, and also serves as the winter residence of the head of Bhutan's monastic order. Continuing to Thimphu, you arrive in time to settle in before the afternoon's sightseeing. Your guide leads you to Buddha Dordenma, the 52m / 169ft seated statue overlooking the Thimphu Valley, said to fulfil an 8th-century prophecy of peace, before continuing to the Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory to see artisans hand-press paper using techniques once reserved for monastery manuscripts and prayer books. The evening is free to explore Thimphu's markets and cafes before settling into your hotel for the night. Accommodation: Hotel in Thimphu

Meals: B,L,D

This morning we drive about 45 minutes north of Thimphu to the trailhead for a scenic hike to Cheri Monastery, a peaceful forest monastery established in 1620. The return walk takes around two hours, following a pleasant trail through forest and across a bridge over the Wang Chhu River. Cheri Monastery is an important centre for the Drukpa Kagyu school of Buddhism, the state religion of Bhutan, and today serves as a monastic institute where monks study Buddhist philosophy, metaphysics, poetry and traditional scriptures. After enjoying a riverside lunch, we return to Thimphu (about 45 minutes drive) to continue our cultural exploration of the capital. We visit the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, commonly known as the Painting School, where students train in Bhutan’s thirteen traditional arts and crafts including thangka painting, wood carving, embroidery and sculpture. We conclude the day at the Royal Textile Academy, which showcases the deep cultural significance of Bhutan’s textile traditions and displays exquisite examples of handwoven fabrics and royal garments. Accommodation: Hotel in Thimphu

Meals: B,L,D

You drive to Kila Goenpa nunnery, then begin a hike toward Chele La Pass (3,988m / 13,083ft), walking through forest lined with chortens and prayer flags. From the pass, ridgelines of the surrounding Himalaya extend in every direction before you meet your vehicle for the descent into the Haa Valley. On arrival in Haa you visit Lhakhang Karpo (White Temple) and Lhakhang Nakpo (Black Temple), two temples traditionally believed to have been established in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, as part of his effort to build 108 temples in a single day to subdue a giant ogress believed to be obstructing the spread of Buddhism across the Himalaya. Lhakhang Karpo has been recently renovated and hosts the annual Haa Tshechu festival, while Lhakhang Nakpo is said to conceal a hidden sacred lake beneath its shrine. Later there is time to walk through the small town of Haa, a one-street settlement surrounded by forested mountains. You then check into your heritage lodge, built in traditional Bhutanese architectural style. If you wish, you may also experience a Bhutanese hot stone bath, a local tradition after a day of travel and walking. Accommodation: Soednam Zingkha Heritage Lodge or similar

Meals: B,L,D

After a relaxed morning exploring the quiet town of Haa, we drive back to Paro, following a scenic mountain road through forested valleys and over high ridgelines. In the evening we visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest and most sacred temples. It is considered a contemporary of Jambay Lhakhang in Bumthang and is believed to have been built in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo. According to legend, a giant demoness lay across Tibet and the Himalaya, obstructing the spread of Buddhism. To subdue her, the king is said to have constructed 108 temples across the region, each placed on key points of her body. Kyichu Lhakhang is believed to pin down the left foot of the demoness, symbolically allowing Buddhism to flourish throughout the Himalaya. After time to explore the temple and its peaceful surroundings, we return to Paro for the evening. Accommodation: Hotel Drukchen or similar

Meals: B,L,D

This morning we drive to the trailhead for Taktsang Monastery, known as the Tiger's Nest. Perched on a cliffside above the Paro Valley, the monastery is regarded as one of the meditation sites of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), who according to legend arrived here on the back of a flying tigress. The trail ascends steadily through blue pine and rhododendron forest, with views of the monastery clinging to the rock face high above the valley. After reaching the main viewpoint and monastery complex, we take time before descending back to the valley. Later in the afternoon there is time to explore Paro town, where the main street is lined with traditional wooden shopfronts, cafés and handicraft stores. We overnight in Paro. Accommodation: Hotel Drukchen, Paro, or similar

Meals: B,L,D

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Paro International Airport for your onward flight. As you depart Bhutan, we bid you farewell and hope you carry home lasting memories of the remarkable landscapes, rich culture and warm hospitality experienced throughout your journey in the Kingdom of Bhutan.

The Bhutan Cultural Journey was wonderful. Our guide Singye and driver Narwong were first class. Singye's knowledge of Bhutanese culture and religion was outstanding and he was always looking for ways to add to our experience. Bhutan is a beautiful country and the people are extremely friendly. This trip had a great balance between culture, walking, scenery and local experiences-we loved every minute of it.

The Bhutan Cultural Journey was outstanding! Sonam, our leader, was not only professional and knowledgeable, but was easily able to cater the daily activities to best meet the needs of the group. Everything went smoothly from start to finish. Bhutan is an incredibly beautiful country, and the itinerary of this trip provided an excellent overview of the country and it's culture.

It was helpful to have travel documents by email & hardcopy. World Expeditions agents we used in Brisbane, Pam & Renee answered our queries promptly & were very thorough with bookings and information. Renee was helpful in relation to a query I had for a trip with a different company. Excellent service, thank you! Guide very informative, driver very careful - both good.

The flight from Bangkok to Paro was very comfortable , flight staff wonderful, descent between mountains was magical(not nearly as terrifying as imagined). We were warmly greeted by our guide,Dendup Norbu and driver Tsring, after passing through the relaxed & pleasant customs(not to mention the various Bhutanese chatting to us). The accommodation was very comfortable, especially the beds! Our guide went out of his way to ensure the meals were varied and often bought & cooked special treats for us. His knowledge of Bhutanese culture and religion was extensive and enriched our experience. We felt truly welcome and through Dendup and Tsring included in the special & everyday aspects of local life. Their kindness ,patience and humour went well beyond “the job” and clearly reflected the values of Bhutanese culture. Thank you for your part in organising such a wonderful holiday.

Extra trip info

Every departure date advises whether the date is confirmed, and roughly how full it is. Here is what each one means.

Is the departure confirmed?

Guaranteed to go This departure has reached its minimum number and will run.
It is the point travellers should wait for before booking any non-refundable flights.
Close to guaranteed This appears only when a date is close to reaching minimum numbers. If it shows 1 or 2 to guaranteed, book as a pair on a date needing two and it reaches its minimum. Your booking confirms the date for everybody already booked.

How full is the date I am looking at?

Space is filling or Space is filling fast This date has bookings and places are still open. Filling fast means limited spots available, so don't leave your decision too late.
Closing soon Down to its last few places, or close enough to departure that we are finalising numbers. Still bookable online.
Closed Not bookable online - either full, or inside the notice we need to arrange permits, flights and logistics. Ask us anyway, you never know!

Availability questions answered

Will this trip actually go ahead, or could it be cancelled?

If a date shows Guaranteed to go, it runs regardless of further bookings.

What does 2 to guarantee mean?

It means two travellers are enough to confirm the departure. It could be 2 more to add to the group, or the date only needs 2 people to run. Either way, if you book for two people, the date will become guaranteed to run.

What happens if my departure does not reach minimum numbers?

You will know the status before you book. Every date on this page is labelled, and dates marked “Guaranteed to go” are running regardless of further bookings. Where a date has not reached its minimum we either offer a surcharge to operate for a smaller group size so it can still run, or we cancel it. We contact you directly either way.

Will I get my money back if you cancel a departure?

If we cancel a departure due to not meeting minimum trip numbers, you receive a full refund of everything you have paid us less any non recoverable costs, where insurance may cover you. We cannot refund money committed elsewhere – additional non refundable deposits advised at the time of booking, flights, visas, vaccinations, gear - which is why it is worth waiting for “Guaranteed to go” before booking other arrangements around this trip date. Please read our Booking Terms and Conditions before you book.

Why can't I book some dates online?

Each trip closes online a set time before departure. Permits, internal flights and hut or campsite bookings all have to be arranged before we take payment. Call or enquire as it might still be possible to organise last minute places.

The date I want is closed. What are my options and why does it say to enquire?

Cancellations happen and places do open up on closed dates, so it is worth being on our list. We can also tell you which nearby date on the same trip has space, which is usually the faster route.

None of these dates suit me. Can you run this trip on another date?

Yes, as a private departure. We can run this trip on a date you choose, for your own group - family, friends, a club, or in many cases, just for the two of you. Tell us when you want to travel and who is coming, and we will build it around that.
