Overview

For active travellers seeking a genuine challenge, this journey crosses Costa Rica from the Pacific side to the Caribbean coast - by bike, on foot, by raft and by kayak. Your route takes you into the Central Highlands, a chain of volcanic mountains and cloud forest that forms the backbone of the country, where you ride and trek through coffee-growing regions, misty forest trails and remote rural communities. As you descend into the Caribbean lowlands, the landscape shifts dramatically to dense rainforest, winding rivers and fertile plantations. Wildlife encounters are a constant possibility in one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Along the way, you may spot howler monkeys, sloths and colourful birdlife such as toucans and parrots, while the forest itself reveals towering trees, tangled vines and a layered canopy.

A defining moment of the journey is the descent of the Pacuare River, one of the world’s classic whitewater experiences. Rafting through steep rainforest gorges on Class II to IV rapids, you move between high-energy sections and calmer stretches. As the river widens, the journey continues by kayak through lowland waterways and banana-growing regions, finishing at the Caribbean coast.

This is an active journey designed for travellers who enjoy a challenge and the strong sense of achievement that comes with it.

The adventure begins! After an early start with fresh fruit and coffee, we set off by bike to climb into the steep mountains of Costa Rica’s sparsely populated Pacific coast. The hard work is rewarded with sweeping vistas. In the small town of Esquipulas, we pause for a hearty breakfast before swapping bikes for hiking boots. Today’s trek takes us toward the central highlands, beginning with the challenge of the infamous “Cemetery Hill”- a strenuous 3 km / 1.8 mi climb. Along the way, we pass through coffee plantations and enjoy our final glimpses of the Pacific coast before heading inland. Reaching the pueblo of San Lorenzo, we switch to mountain bikes and continue riding to the quaint town of Santa María, where we refuel with a typical Costa Rican meal and rest overnight in comfortable local cabins Overnight: Local cabins, Santa María Activity: Trekking (approx. 14 km / 9 mi), Mountain biking (approx. 12 km / 7 mi)

Today brings the toughest climb of the traverse. Before breakfast we take on a demanding 14 km / 8.5 mi uphill stretch by mountain bike to the Continental Divide, reaching an altitude of 2,330 m / 7,644 ft – the highest point of the journey. From here, the reward is an exhilarating descent, with the remainder of the day spent biking downhill on dirt roads and single-track trails. Meals: B,L,D

After breakfast we continue mountain biking towards the whitewater at La Cruz, which is the gateway to the raging Pacuare River. Here we have lunch and embark on a whitewater rafting journey through pristine rainforest spotted with waterfalls. The rapids section of the river is approximately 30km of Class II-IV rapids. By afternoon we arrive at our comfortable riverside camp, El Nido del Tigre. Nestled between the sounds of the rainforest and the hum of the river, take time to explore this lush environment first hand, looking out for toucans overhead or simply relaxing in a hammock to the sounds of the river. Cycling distance: 46km. Whitewater rafting distance: 10kmAfter breakfast, continue mountain biking towards rafting “put-in”in La Cruz, the upper gateway to the Pacuare River. The sweet taste of success! This morning ride by bike through banana plantations to the town of Freeman, where we begin the final leg of the traverse. Switching to kayaks, paddle down the lower Pacuare River, leaving the rapids behind as the water slows into the Caribbean lowlands. The landscape shifts from rainforest to endless banana fields as the river winds gently towards the sea. At last, we reach the Caribbean coast, celebrating with a toast on the beach to mark the completion of our epic journey. After time to relax by the shore, transfer by motorboat to Moín, then by vehicle to your hotel for a well-earned rest Overnight: Moín hotel or similar, Moín Activity: Mountain biking approx. 26 km / 16 mi; kayaking approx. 12 km / 7 mi

I loved every moment of my trip! This was my first time travelling on a guided trip and it was a brilliant way to enjoy all that Costa Rica has to offer.

The service from Chris prior to departure was excellent and the communication with Jeffery whilst en-route was reassuring (we had a hiccup with our bags missing our connecting flight to San Jose) and we slept well knowing our bags would reach us before leaving San Jose.

Once the trip had begun it was quickly evident that Jeffery is a sensationally good guide, and with the aid of his support team we were well fed, watered and entertained throughout the trip.

I would not hesitate to book another similar challenge through World Expeditions

Great all around trip. The guide (Jeff) was organized, attentive and fun to be around. Briefings each day were informative and useful. The food was excellent, camp sites were good. The rafting was very exhilarating. The equipment was in good condition and they were prepared for mishaps. We had bike chain break but they had spare bike readily available. You could push yourself as hard or as easy as you felt comfortable.

We had a great adventure traversing Costa Rica from the Pacific coast to the Carribbean coast. Our guide Carlos was excellent - our safety and well being together with getting the most out of this experience was his highest priority. His knowledge of the flora and fauna and local culture in the areas we travelled through enabled us to fully appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of Costa Rica . His wingman Vito made the transition from various activities effortless. As an added bonus both he and Carlos were excellent cooks! We had a great experience and would recommend the trip to others.

What a fantastic experience. Great combination of biking, trekking and rafting/kayaking. Amazing scenery, flora and fauna. Special shout out to our guide Manuel who was a joy to be with, kept us safe and provided expert local information. Huge thanks also to our brilliant driver/cook Memo and Abel who looked after us superbly on the white water rapids. Really a trip of a lifetime

That was an adventure! The Costa Rican company that organized the tour, did a wonderful job with all the logistics, not to speak of the scenic itinerary through the mountains. Our guide was absolutely amazing, in his knowledge of flora and fauna and of the country, in his skills as a cyclist, hiker, rafter, cook and most of all, as a person. All lodgings (hotel or camping) were great each in their own way, our guide’s and driver’s food was the most succulent.

We were very impressed with our tour across Costa Rica. Our trip leader Juan Carlos and his support team were well organized, knowledgeable, and fun to spend time with. They also kept us well fed with delicious meals and snacks, most of which were made from scratch. The logistics behind this trip were more than I had expected, switching back and forth from hiking, biking, rafting and kayaking, but we never had to wait to continue our next leg. Thank you to the folks at World Expeditions for setting up our trip.

OMG! Best trip ever! We had Chris as our main guide and Jefrey and Darvin supporting. Our group was amazing and we finished the trip really feeling like a team.

We crossed the whole country without putting a foot in a vehicle, only biking, hiking, rafting and kayaking. The tour is thought to give everyone enough time to accomplish this feat. Some days we woke up 530am in the morning, so we had enough time to enjoy the ride and be able to get to the next stop. It is quite physically challenging, bike sections as well as hiking are very steep. I strongly recommend some preparation before signing up. There is no need from specific training, but you have to be relatively fit. The majority of the nights we spent in campings. You will see they say the guides will cook. When I read that the first time I was like "oh boy, this is not going to be good". Darvin was the main cook in the camping, OMG! I wanted to bring him home!!! Seriously, best food ever! A week after coming back I was already missing him. Jefrey was the rafting guide for my boat and he was phenomenal. Really knows his stuff. And Chris... what to say about this guy? The way he guided the tour made us feel like a team and he knows this route as the back of his hand, having done it for several years. Strongly recommend this tour!!!

A thoroughly enjoyable trip that I couldn't recommend more highly. Tito and Vito looked after us really well throughout the trip. Tito's energetic and knowledgeable guiding really added to the trip and Vito's cooking was delicious! We had a good sized group of 8 (including guide & support crew) which worked really well and meant that there was hardly any waiting around and we all got on very well too. We stayed in some stunning locations, particularly the rafting campsite - El Nido del Tigre. It was lovely to see toucans flying overhead whilst we relaxed after our trek to the beautiful waterfall. All in all a fantastic holiday!
