We supply train tickets for your journey from Kyoto or from Tokyo to Nakatsugawa, including a ride on the world-famous Shinkansen (Bullet Train) to Nagoya. Upon arriving at Nakatsugawa by train, you can leave your bags at the Tourist Information Centre, allowing you to travel light on the bus journey to Magome (payable direct at your own cost - approx JPY 800, subject to change). From here you walk over the Magome Pass to Tsumago, one of the best-preserved and most evocative of the Nakasendo post-towns. Tonight you will spend the night at a family-run Minshuku in Tsumago or the nearby hamlet of O-Tsumago, with a delicious home-cooked Japanese dinner and breakfast included. After dinner, enjoy a stroll though the village streets in the magical quiet of the evening, wearing the yukata gown supplied by your inn. Walking distance/time: 8.3km / 5.2 miles / 3 hrs Elevation gain: 326m / 1069 feet of ascent and 430m / 1410 feet of descent Note: luggage transfer from Magome included Accommodation: Minshuku (Family-run Guesthouse)

Meals: D

The longest day on the Nakasendo Way trail is a beautiful and varied hike from Tsumago to Nojiri. Or perhaps you would prefer to choose the shorter alternative to Nagiso instead. The trail travels through small valleys and past forests of bamboo and Japanese cedar, through some of the least-developed scenery on the tour. After your walk you continue by train to Kiso-Fukushima (tickets provided). Tonight enjoy staying at a lovely hot-spring ryokan in the Kiso-Fukusima area. For accommodations on the outskirts of the town a complimentary transfer from the station is provided by the Ryokan. The Ryokan has lovely hot-spring baths. Walking distance/time: 18.4km / 11.5 miles / 6 hrs Elevation gain: 723m / 2275 feet of ascent and 644m /2112 feet of descent We offer a shorter alternative of 1 hour (3.7km / 2.3miles). You can choose which option you prefer on the day - no need to decide in advance. Note: please leave your luggage for transfer at the front desk of your accommodation by 08:30am Accommodation: Onsen Ryokan (Hot-spring Travellers Inn)

Meals: B,D

We supply train tickets for the short journey from Kiso-Fukushima to Yabuhara, the starting point for the hike over the Torii Pass to Narai. Explore this atmospheric village before you continue on today’s journey to the small town of Kiso-Hirasawa, famous for its lacquerware. There are many small shops selling beautifully crafted tableware and furniture. From Kiso-Hirasawa, transfer by train to the castle town of Matsumoto for your overnight stay. Your hosts will serve a home-cooked Japanese dinner and breakfast. Walking distance/time: 8.7km / 5.4 miles / 4 hrs Elevation gain: 344m / 1128 feet of ascent and 270m / 885 feet of descent In Kiso-Fukushima there is an optional, fairly strenuous, circular walk to a local waterfall. The circular walk is 7km / 4.3 miles with 632m / 2075 feet of ascent, 637m / 2090 feet of descent and takes 2-3 hours. You can take this walk in the morning, before heading onwards to Yabuhara. Note: please leave your bags at the front desk of your accommodation by 08:30am Accommodation: A Japanese Inn, Matsumoto.

Meals: B,D

After breakfast, you will have time dedicated to sightseeing around Matsumoto. Highly recommended is a visit to Matsumoto Castle, one of only 12 castles in Japan that has retained its original interior and exterior structures. When you are finished in Matsumoto, you will travel by train to your final stop for your onward journey to Karuizawa or Komoro for your final overnight stay. Both locations have lovely inns with a real sense of history and fine Japanese baths. Arrive at your accommodation in time for a wonderful dinner featuring local produce. Note: Your accommodation will assist you to book luggage transfers (payable direct) to your post tour accommodation. You will need to carry an overnight bag today as you will not have access to your main luggage until the end of day 5. Accommodation: Ryokan - traditional inn

Meals: B,D

After breakfast, your final walk on the Nakasendo Trail is from Karuizawa to Yokokawa. Leaving Karuizawa, the trail takes you over the Usui-toge Pass and down a gentle descent along one of the most beautiful sections of the Nakasendo, and certainly the least-developed. From Yokokawa, board the local train to Takasaki and change there for your ride on the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) to Tokyo. The train journey takes around two hours and you will arrive in Tokyo in the late afternoon or early evening. Walking distance/time: 16.7km / 10 miles / 6 hrs Elevation gain: 372m / 1220 feet of ascent and 862m / 2828 feet of descent NOTE - The walk can be shortened by 3.3km / 2 miles by a taxi ride at the start of the day (payable direct at your own cost).

This hike was perfect for the length and difficulty rating. Support and accommodation was outstanding. My second trip with World Expeditions (Jordan) and I would not hesitate to book further adventures.

Very enjoyable. The day by day instructions are sometimes hard to follow and not written in idiomatic English.

The Nakasendo Way is a beautiful walk that is not overtaxing but has enough exertion to give a sense of achievement the end of the day. It was lovely to walk in the forests and to get a sense of rural Japan. The ryokans we stayed in were of a very good standard and the meals excellent, even for people who don't particularly love Japanese food.We thoroughly enjoyed the onsens after a day of walking. Moving between locations each day was quite straightforward and the provided train tickets made this easy.

Overall, we were satisfied with the trip.

The information package was adequate with just the right amount of information.

The Japanese train system has destinations in English subtitles, on the platforms and in individual train carriages so using the rail system was not a concern.

Once on the trail the supplied guide booklet was adequate but some of the descriptions concerning direction could be a bit misleading where signs are concerned chiefly because they had deteriorated or were in Japanese characters with no English description.

Great to have all the hiking notes (including photo directions) & train tickets and bus instructions work! Quite a logistical achievement. Very interesting hike along an historically rich trail.

This was a wonderful trip. Everything was so well planned and we had no trouble following the excellent directions. Pre trip we received all the information and on our arrival at our Tokyo hotel our package of information was handed to us. This whole booking process was easy and seamless.

The walk is beautiful, not arduous. Accommodation was excellent and the food at each of the accommodations was amazing. Feasts.

Luggage transfer van in Japan

One of the pleasures of walking in Japan is travelling with just a light daypack, thanks to Japan’s highly efficient luggage forwarding system.

The service is widely used across Japan and is known for its reliability and efficiency, as you would expect in Japan.

Luggage transfers allow your main bag to be transferred between accommodations, leaving you to enjoy your walk between villages and historic routes. Your luggage is collected from the accommodation in the morning and delivered to your next overnight stay.

With only your daily essentials to carry, you can fully enjoy the experience of walking through rural landscapes, forest trails and traditional villages without the strain of extra weight.

This freedom is a huge attraction for those that enjoy self-guided trips.

Japan’s simple but effective luggage transfer system is one of the reasons walking journeys in Japan are such an enjoyable and accessible experience for walkers of all abilities and experience.

Check your trip inclusions to see if luggage transfers are included in your particular self-guided walk in Japan. Talk to our expert team if you require further assistance.

The best seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), when temperatures are mild and the mountain scenery is at its most vibrant. Expect pleasant daytime hiking temperatures but prepare for some cooler mornings and potential showers.

Not at all. If you enjoy regular day walks and are comfortable walking up to 16km on varied terrain, you'll be fine. You don’t need technical skills – just a good level of fitness and curiosity.

Self-guided trips provide all the logistics, bookings and information you need to complete the walk on your own. You’ll receive detailed route notes, accommodation bookings, local transport logistics, and luggage transfers – so you can focus on walking at your own pace.

Each day, you’ll follow clear route notes to walk from one village to the next. You’ll carry a daypack while your main luggage is transferred for you. Most evenings you’ll stay in traditional Japanese inns, with dinner and breakfast included.

Independent travellers who like the idea of exploring at their own pace, without a group or guide. It suits people comfortable reading maps and following instructions, with a good base fitness.

You should be able to walk comfortably for 5–6 hours a day over undulating terrain. Daily distances range from 8km to 16km, with some forested climbs and descents, so a regular walking habit is the best preparation.

Yes, there are options to use public transport between some overnight stops if you prefer to rest or shorten a day.
