Overview

If you’re ready to move beyond trekking and into the world of mountaineering, the perfect objective is the semi technical Chekigo Peak (6121m) which offers excellent climbing and the opportunity to be part of a first Australian, Canadian, US and New Zealand ascent. Designed and led by renowned high-altitude guide Soren Kruse Ledet, the program combines world-class instruction with one of the most spectacular alpine settings on Earth. This is a unique opportunity as the peak has been very rarely climbed, with a Swiss/UK first ascent recorded and few other nationalities having summitted.

The journey begins with a scenic approach through forests of rhododendron, pine and juniper, gradually rising into the stunning Rolwaling Valley where snow-covered peaks dominate the skyline. Base Camp is positioned above the snowline with dramatic views of Gauri Shankar (7134m) and Melungtse (7181m) – an inspiring backdrop to your alpine development.

Throughout the expedition, you’ll build essential mountaineering skills including anchor placement on snow, ice and rock, fixed rope travel, belaying, abseiling, rope handling and movement on steep ground. With a low three-to-one climber to Sherpa ratio and expert guidance throughout, you’ll be well supported as you gain confidence and competence in real mountain conditions. For experienced climbers, the valley offers ideal terrain to refine and test your skills. For those newer to mountaineering, it’s a rare chance to establish a strong foundation in safety and technique in a controlled and inspiring environment. The journey culminates in a rewarding ascent of Chekigo Peak (6121m) – a semi-technical summit near the Tibetan border that sees very few ascents. From the summit, the views stretch across the Rolwaling and deep into Tibet – a fitting reward to cap off this transformative mountain journey.

World Expeditions has been leading expeditions in the Himalaya since 1975 – pioneering treks and climbs across some of the region’s most remote and demanding landscapes. That legacy of care, safety and deep local expertise underpins every step of this journey. Your guide, Soren Kruse Ledet, brings more than 30 years of climbing and guiding experience – with over 50 Himalayan expeditions to his name. Respected for his calm leadership, technical mastery and passion for teaching, Soren is not only a highly accomplished mountaineer but a trusted mentor for anyone looking to take their mountain skills to the next level.

Overnight: Radisson Hotel Kathmandu

Meals: Nil

This morning, you'll meet with your expedition leader for a comprehensive gear check to ensure you have everything required for the climb. Any outstanding equipment can be hired or purchased in Kathmandu before we depart for the mountains. You'll also be issued your expedition gear, including a sleeping bag, down jacket and kit bag, along with your technical climbing equipment such as an ice axe, crampons and harness. The remainder of the day is free for you to explore Nepal's vibrant capital at your own pace. You may choose to visit some of Kathmandu's renowned UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Pashupatinath Temple, Nepal's most sacred Hindu temple, and Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest and most important Buddhist stupas in the world. The historic Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur also offer a fascinating insight into Nepal's rich cultural and architectural heritage. This free day also provides an opportunity to rest, make any last-minute preparations and soak up the atmosphere before your Himalayan adventure begins. Accommodation: Radisson Hotel Kathmandu

Meals: B

After an early breakfast, we depart Kathmandu and begin the scenic drive east towards the Rolwaling Valley. The journey to Chechet (1,350m / 4,429ft) takes approximately 7 to 8 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions, passing through rural villages, terraced hillsides and dramatic river valleys. On arrival at Chechet, we cross the Rolwaling Khola just below its confluence before beginning our trek. The trail climbs steadily through terraced farmland and lush temperate forest for around 3 to 4 hours to the Sherpa village of Simigaon (2,050m / 6,726ft). As we gain elevation, the surrounding landscape becomes increasingly scenic, with forests of oak and rhododendron draped in ferns, mosses and orchids. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including playful rhesus and langur monkeys that are often seen moving through the forest canopy. Accommodation: Fully serviced wilderness campsite, Simigaon.

Meals: B,L,D

Today's trek follows an undulating trail through dense forest as we continue deeper into the remote Rolwaling Valley. Leaving Simigaon behind, we ascend gradually to Dongang (2,790m / 9,154ft), passing beneath towering cliffs and through beautiful forests of rhododendron, oak and pine. This little-visited region lies well away from Nepal's main trekking routes, offering a true sense of wilderness and solitude. On arrival at camp, your guides will introduce some of the fundamental rope skills that will be used throughout the expedition, including tying basic mountaineering knots and understanding their practical applications. This is the first step in developing the technical skills you'll build on during the climbing school at Na. The steady gain in altitude also marks an important stage in the acclimatisation process as we prepare for the higher elevations ahead. Accommodation: Fully serviced wilderness campsite, Dongang.

Meals: B,L,D

Today's trek continues deeper into the spectacular Rolwaling Valley as we make our way to the traditional Sherpa village of Beding (3,750m / 12,303ft). Following the Rolwaling Khola, we gradually gain altitude through beautiful alpine forests before emerging into a dramatic glacial valley surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks. As we climb higher, the scenery becomes increasingly spectacular, with expansive mountain vistas accompanying us throughout the day. Beding is one of the largest and most significant settlements in the valley and offers a wonderful opportunity to experience the rich traditions and hospitality of the local Sherpa community. After arriving at camp, we'll continue developing our mountaineering skills by practising essential rope knots and techniques that will form the foundation for the climbing school later in the expedition. The day's gradual ascent provides another important step in our acclimatisation as we prepare for higher elevations. Accommodation: Fully serviced wilderness campsite, Beding

Meals: B,L,D

Today we continue our journey through the spectacular Rolwaling Valley, trekking to the seasonal settlement of Na Village (4,200m / 13,780ft), which will serve as our base for the next five days of mountaineering training. As we gain altitude, the valley opens into an expansive alpine landscape, with magnificent views of Chobuje, Kang Nachugo, Chekigo, Bamongo and Dorje Phagmo dominating the skyline. Na is a remote yak grazing settlement occupied during the warmer months, nestled on a broad alpine plain surrounded by towering peaks and glacial scenery. Our campsite is set on a pleasant grassy terrace above the rocky riverbed, providing the ideal base for our climbing school. Over the coming days, you'll undertake a comprehensive mountaineering training program under the guidance of our experienced Sherpa climbing team. Training sessions take place on nearby snow slopes, rock faces and glaciated terrain, where you'll progressively develop the skills required for the ascent of Chekigo Peak. Skills covered include snow anchor placement, ascending and descending fixed ropes, belaying, abseiling, jumaring, rope handling, movement on steep snow and ice, lead climbing and placing rock protection. Time is dedicated to practising and refining each technique to ensure you are confident and comfortable using your equipment in a real alpine environment. With a low 3:1 climber-to-Sherpa ratio, you'll receive personalised instruction and plenty of hands on coaching throughout the course. For experienced climbers, this is an excellent opportunity to refine existing skills, while those newer to mountaineering will establish a strong technical foundation in a safe and supportive environment. The combination of progressive skills training and several nights at 4,200 metres also provides excellent acclimatisation before we move higher onto the mountain. Accommodation: Fully serviced wilderness campsite, Na Village

Meals: B,L,D

Leaving Na Village behind, we begin our ascent towards Chekigo Base Camp (4,362m / 14,311ft), drawing ever closer to our objective, Chekigo Peak (6,121m / 20,082ft). The trail traverses alpine meadows, glacial moraine and rugged mountain terrain as the valley gives way to a dramatic high alpine environment. As we gain altitude, the surrounding peaks and glaciers dominate the landscape, providing a constant reminder of the challenge that lies ahead. The steady ascent also plays an important role in our acclimatisation, allowing our bodies to continue adapting to the thinner air while enjoying the remarkable solitude of this rarely visited region. Upon arrival at Base Camp, we'll settle into our fully serviced campsite and take time to organise equipment and prepare for the next stage of the expedition. Your expedition leader will provide a briefing on the climbing plan, current mountain conditions and the days ahead as we prepare to move higher onto the mountain. Accommodation: Fully serviced wilderness campsite, Chekigo Base Camp

Meals: B,L,D

Today is dedicated to rest, acclimatisation and final preparations before we begin our ascent of Chekigo Peak. Spending time at Base Camp allows your body to further adapt to the altitude while ensuring both you and your equipment are fully prepared for the climb ahead. Throughout the day, we'll unpack and thoroughly check all of our climbing equipment, reviewing and practising the techniques developed during the climbing school. Your expedition leader and Sherpa climbing team will conduct final equipment inspections and briefings to ensure everyone is confident with the procedures, equipment and climbing plan. Only your personal climbing equipment and essential items will be carried during the ascent. Group equipment, including food, fuel, ropes and technical climbing gear, will be transported by our experienced support staff. The remainder of your luggage will be securely stored at Base Camp, where part of our team will remain until we return from the mountain. This final day at Base Camp provides an excellent opportunity to rest, hydrate, enjoy the spectacular alpine surroundings and mentally prepare for the exciting days ahead. Accommodation: Fully serviced wilderness campsite, Chekigo Base Camp.

Meals: B,L,D

Today we leave the comfort of Base Camp and begin our ascent towards High Camp, entering the true alpine environment of Chekigo Peak. Travelling alongside our experienced Sherpa climbing team, we make steady progress over glaciated terrain and snow slopes, applying the skills developed during our climbing school. With a low 3:1 climber-to-Sherpa ratio, you'll receive excellent support and guidance throughout the climb, allowing you to move confidently and efficiently while continuing to acclimatise. Our pace is deliberately measured, with regular breaks to rest, hydrate and take in the spectacular mountain scenery. Upon reaching High Camp, we'll settle into our tents, enjoy a warm meal and make our final preparations for tomorrow's summit attempt. Your expedition leader will provide a detailed briefing on the route, weather conditions and the plan for our early morning departure. Accommodation: Fully serviced wilderness campsite, High Camp.

Meals: B,L,D

An early start gives us the best opportunity to take advantage of favourable mountain conditions as we set out on our summit attempt. This is the culmination of the skills, experience and acclimatisation gained over the previous two weeks, putting your mountaineering training into practice in a true alpine environment. The ascent is semi technical, following steep snow and ice slopes with angles reaching 55 to 60 degrees. Depending on the conditions, sections of the route may be protected with fixed ropes, while other sections require careful movement as a team under the guidance of our experienced Sherpa climbing leaders. As this is an exploratory alpine route, the exact line of ascent will be determined by current snow, ice and weather conditions to ensure the safest and most efficient passage. Standing on the summit of Chekigo Peak (6,121m / 20,082ft) is a truly rewarding achievement. From the summit, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views across the vast Tibetan Plateau, the remote Rolwaling Himal and an ocean of snow-covered Himalayan peaks, a fitting reward for the effort, commitment and teamwork required to reach this rarely climbed mountain. Several days have been allocated for the summit attempt and weather contingency, providing the flexibility to choose the safest and most favourable summit window. Your expedition leader will determine the climbing schedule based on weather forecasts, snow and glacier conditions, and the strength of the team. Contingency days may also be used to allow for additional acclimatisation or changing mountain conditions, maximising both safety and the likelihood of a successful ascent. Accommodation: Fully serviced wilderness campsites

Meals: B,L,D

Our descent begins as we retrace our route through the spectacular Rolwaling Valley, leaving the high alpine environment behind. Following the Rolwaling Khola, we descend through forests of rhododendron, pine and juniper, with opportunities to spot the region's abundant birdlife and enjoy the changing mountain scenery from a different perspective. As we return to the welcoming Sherpa village of Beding (3,750m / 12,303ft), there is time to reflect on the achievements of the expedition and the rewarding journey to the summit of Chekigo Peak. Accommodation: Fully serviced wilderness campsite, Beding

Meals: B,L,D

Continuing our descent through the beautiful Rolwaling Valley, we retrace our route past traditional Sherpa villages and through magnificent old-growth forests of rhododendron, pine and oak. With each step, the towering Himalayan peaks gradually give way to lush hillsides and the warmer landscapes below, offering a final opportunity to appreciate the remarkable scenery and rich cultural heritage of the valley. As we make our way back through Dongang and on to Simigaon, there is time to reflect on the challenges overcome, friendships formed and the unforgettable experiences shared throughout the expedition. Our final evening in the mountains is traditionally celebrated with our Sherpa team, porters and support crew, recognising their incredible efforts and the teamwork that made the expedition possible. Accommodation: Fully serviced wilderness campsites, Dongang and Simigao

Meals: B,L,D

This morning, we enjoy our final walk through the Rolwaling Valley, descending to the roadhead at Chechet, where our private vehicle awaits. From here, we begin the scenic drive back to Kathmandu (1,350m / 4,429ft), retracing our journey through Nepal's picturesque countryside and river valleys. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you'll return to the Radisson Hotel, where a hot shower, comfortable bed and the comforts of the city provide a well-earned reward after your time in the mountains. The remainder of the evening is free to relax, explore the city or celebrate the successful completion of your expedition with your fellow climbers. Accommodation: Radisson Hotel Kathmandu
