Our Annapurna- Dhaulagiri over 55’s trek with leader Roy and sherpas Tikka, Hom and Nawang was exceptional. From the onset, this experienced quartet looked after us so well, answered all our questions, advised on trekking and altitude issues and made sure we remained happy and positive through to the end of the trip. And when one time I was unwell, the leader Roy picked herbs for me from the surrounding grasslands, herbs known for their uplifting properties.
The mountain views at Khopra were life changing and so worthy of a two-night stay. The side trip to the sacred Khayer lake was an incredible 10-hour experience, as feelings of doubt morphed into determination and step by step we arrived - bistari bistari - at the top. I’ll never forget that sense of accomplishment, thanks to our very patient and encouraging guides Tikka and Hom.
As if their trekking experience wasn’t enough, one day we discovered the talented Roy, Tikka and Hom also play instruments, sing and dance! Another treat. Of course, we were obliged to reciprocate.
All this was achieved with only the highest quality of food, which was simply exceptional. We were repeatedly astonished how those three cooks were able to conjure up such delicious meals, on cue, with such variety, noting individual food requests and sometimes in the middle of nowhere, all the while carrying the food and culinary equipment and hiking the same trek as ourselves. And when one of our group members celebrated her birthday, a delicious frosted chocolate cake with candles was miraculously procured, baked by one of the sherpas….in their spare time. Astonishing.
Of course, I can’t forget the young group of porters who were amazing in their work ethic, respect and strength, and I wish them all well.
I can’t thank enough the entire support team - the leader, sherpas, cooks and porters - for their hard work and expertise, all done with such dedication and good humour.
