Spring trekking in Nepal and Bhutan

When to go and recommended treks

For those after warmer daytime temperatures, blossoming flora and generally stable weather, spring is an ideal season for trekking in the Nepal and Bhutan Himalaya.

Rhododendrons begin to bloom, offering a riot of colours from mid-March to mid-May, and varieties of wild flora dance along the foothills. With the winter season closing, the days are longer and the climate in regions at 800 to 2000-metre elevations, such as in the low Annapurnas, make trekking more pleasant.

While early spring can be a tad chilly, the middle of the season will see mildly warmer weather. Expect temperatures to be around 16 to 23°C during the day in the upper hills and lower mountain ranges, and warmer nights ensure that your Himalayan trekking adventure is a much more comfortable one. Forest and farmland vegetation beside the trekking trails are also at its most lush and vibrant and Bhutan's forest trails will see alpine meadows budding with spring flowers.

Everest Base Camp will be full of life with the start of the climbing season and the trails over high mountain passes such as the Cho La, Larkya La and Thorong La in Nepal and Shinge La in Bhutan offer clearer skies to capture the majestic peaks in all its glory.

Encounter yak herders as they establish their summer encampments on trails high above the Paro and Thimbu valleys of Bhutan and the Land of the Thunder Dragon comes alive with special festivals.

Trails are also quieter in March, April and May, compared to the autumn months, making it one of the best seasons to hike in Nepal and Bhutan. Find a selection of our best adventures to take during the spring season below.
