On arrival in El Calafate you will be transferred from the airport to the hotel for overnight accommodation. The remainder of the day is for leisure to take in the shops or a walk beside the lake where flamingos can be seen. It is a good idea to purchase your lunch this afternoon for tomorrow’s tour. Lunch is available for purchase at the glacier, with choices ranging from formal restaurants to snack bars, however it is a more expensive option. Overnight El Calafate Imago Hotel or similar.

Meals: Nil

This morning you are collected from your hotel, joining an English Speaking guide, for the two hour drive to the glacier. This tour is on a shared service basis with other travellers in the group. The drive takes us towards the Andes to the edge of the icecap for a full day tour of this impressive glacier that advances across Lago Argentino. We spend several hours wandering the many paths that offer different vantage points of this calving glacier. The glacier is 4 km wide and 50 - 60 metres high and descends to the surface of the lake, almost cutting the lake in two. Occasionally massive pieces break off and fall into the lake becoming icebergs and creating huge waves in the process. The groans and creaks of the active glacier precede dramatic falls of the ice face. A boat tour on the glacier lake or a Mini-Glacier-Trekking on Perito Moreno can be organised at an additional cost. These options need to be pre-booked before departure. Overnight El Calafate Imago Hotel or similar. Please Note: the Mini-Glacier-Trekking option on the Perito Moreno is only available for travellers between 8 and 65 years of age without any type of special pre-existing medical condition (eg cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, pregnancy, etc). Our team in Argentina has the right to exclude you from the ice trekking if not all necessary criteria for participation are met.

Meals: B

Depart from your hotel in El Calafate for the morning drive across Patagonia and the arid Argentine pampas to El Chalten (approx 4 hours), a village in the heart of Los Glaciares National Park. You will be picked up from your hotel, transferred to the bus terminal from where you take a public bus to El Chalten. On arrival you will be picked up and transferred to your hotel in town. This city was founded in 1985 following the conflict bordering the neighboring country, Chile, to demarcate and protect national land boundary. It currently has approximately 1000 inhabitants and their economic livelihood is based purely on tourist activity. El Chalten is owner of incomparable beauty, offering unique landscapes between lakes and mountains. Its symbol is Mount Fitz Roy, which is 3.359 metres high. In El Chalten you will not find money exchanges or banks. ATMs might not always be filled with cash. It is recommended to carry cash. From here, we make our day trips. We arrive at our lodge, pick-up our boxed lunch and walk to Laguna Torre (6 hrs return). This hike is on a private service basis. This is a beautiful walk taking us towards the majestic spire of Cerro Torre. The mountain view, when the weather is clear is truly impressive and makes this a great day hike. Overnight in Hotel Poincenot or similar Walking distance: 18km Difference in altitude: 250m

Meals: B,L

Full day trekking to Laguna de los Tres. Today we undertake, what many believe is the best hike in Los Glaciares National Park. Our 8-9 hour walk is quite a long day, but it is worth every step. Those not wishing to take the whole trek may take an easier option. This hike is on a shared service basis again and other hikers might join us for the trek today. Every turn of the trail offers a new and impressive landscape. Continue towards Laguna de los Tres, passing by Mt. Rosado and Mt. León, skirting Chorrillo del Salto River, with a breathtaking view of Fitz Roy, Saint Exupery and Piedras Blancas massifs. After lunch we will go on to Poincenot camp site. Crossing Río Blanco, we will come to the camp site with the same name where the ascent to Laguna de Los Tres starts, at the foot of Mt. Fitz Roy. We will continue our trek visiting a balcony from where we will have a spectacular view of Laguna Sucia, a beautiful greenish lagoon with small icebergs floating in it, 300 meters below us. We return to El Chalten in the afternoon. Overnight in Hotel Poincenot or similar Walking distance: 20km Difference in altitude: 750m

Meals: B,L

The drive back to El Calafate takes 4 hours and the road is now paved for most of the journey. On arrival at the bus station in El Calafate you will be met and transferred to the airport where our trip concludes. NB - We recommend that you do not book any departure flights before 16:00 (4pm) on the last day. If you are travelling in low season (March), arrival in El Calafate can be later than 4pm and you may need an additional night in El Calafate. Please check with us if you intend to fly out on the last day of the trip. Please advise us if you require dropoff at hotel instead of the airport.

The accommodation, transfers etc were all excellent and the 3 guides I had were very nice and did a great job of showing me spectacular scenery and explaining the history and flora and fauna.

Excellent introduction to Argentinian Patagonia. Covered the three not to be missed sights: Magnificent Perito Moreno Glacier Laguna Torre Laguna de Los Tres. We were private travelers so missed the camaraderie of group travel but everything was well organized. Plenty of time to explore quaint El Calafate. The scenery is just spectacular and the guides took great delight in showing us this splendor. Very committed to the environment.

Entire trip was very well planned with informative and helpful guides and drivers at every step of the way. We had some tight bus connections and it was very comforting to be met by a reliable guide at each stop. All in all, our trip went very smoothly and hassle-free.

We found that the level of service, food and accommodation was excellent. Added was the knowledge of the various staff giving lectures & slideshows and their concerns for the environment.

The most memorable parts of the trip were wandering the viewing platforms of the Perito Moreno glacier and hiking in view of Mt FitzRoy.

Extra trip info

Every departure date advises whether the date is confirmed, and roughly how full it is. Here is what each one means.

Is the departure confirmed?

Guaranteed to go This departure has reached its minimum number and will run.
It is the point travellers should wait for before booking their international flights.
Close to guaranteed This appears only when a date is close to reaching minimum numbers. If it shows 1 or 2 to guaranteed, book as a pair on a date needing two and it reaches its minimum. Your booking confirms the date for everybody already booked.

How full is the date I am looking at?

Space is filling or Space is filling fast This date has bookings and places are still open. Filling fast means limited spots available.
Closing soon Down to its last few places, or close enough to departure that we are finalising numbers. Still bookable online.
Closed Not bookable online - either full, or inside the notice we need to arrange permits, flights and logistics. Ask us anyway, you never know!

Availability questions answered

Will this trip actually go ahead, or could it be cancelled?

If a date shows Guaranteed to go, it runs regardless of further bookings.

What does 2 to guarantee mean?

It means two travellers are enough to confirm the departure. It could be 2 more to add to the group, or the date only needs 2 people to run. Either way, if you book for two people, the date will become guaranteed to run.

What happens if my departure does not reach minimum numbers?

You will know the status before you book. Every date on this page is labelled, and dates marked “Guaranteed to go” are running regardless of further bookings. Where a date has not reached its minimum we either offer a small group surcharge so it can still run, or we cancel it. We contact you directly either way.

Will I get my money back if you cancel a departure?

If we cancel a departure you receive a full refund of everything you have paid us. We cannot refund money committed elsewhere - flights, visas, vaccinations, gear - which is why it is worth waiting for “Guaranteed to go” before booking other arrangements around this trip date. Please read our Booking Terms and Conditions before you book.

Why can't I book some dates online?

Each trip closes online a set time before departure. Permits, internal flights and hut or campsite bookings all have to be arranged before we take payment. Call or enquire as it might still be possible to organise last minute places.

The date I want is closed. What are my options and why does it say to enquire?

Cancellations happen and places do open up on closed dates, so it is worth being on our list. We can also tell you which nearby date on the same trip has space, which is usually the faster route.

None of these dates suit me. Can you run this trip on another date?

Yes, as a private departure. We can run this trip on a date you choose, for your own group - family, friends, a club, or just the two of you. Tell us when you want to travel and who is coming, and we will build it around that.
