Overview

In the far south of Patagonia, the Mitre Peninsula of Tierra del Fuego delivers one of the world’s most remote and powerful horse trekking experiences. Riding with local horsemen and sure-footed Creole horses, you follow historic gaucho routes across windswept pampas, lenga forests, peat bogs, and storm-lashed coastlines. The landscape is raw and untamed, punctuated by wild horse herds, shipwreck remains, and vast ocean horizons. Nights are spent in working estancias and remote posts, where simplicity deepens the connection to this last great frontier.

You are met on arrival in Ushuaia and transferred to the joining hotel. In the evening, meet your guide for a detailed expedition briefing covering safety, riding conditions and equipment. Saddlebags are issued and final preparations made for the journey ahead. Accommodation: Altos de Ushuaia

A scenic 230km drive crosses the Andes via Garibaldi Pass, revealing sweeping views of lakes and forests. At Estancia María Luisa, you meet the horses and support crew and begin riding at a relaxed pace to settle into the trek. Crossing the Irigoyen River at low tide, you ride on to the remote Puesto La Chaira, the last outpost of the region’s puesteros. Accommodation: Puesto La Chaira or similar

Today marks your first full day in the saddle as you ride deeper into Tierra del Fuego’s wild coastline. Shipwreck remains appear along the beaches, silent reminders of the region’s harsh maritime history. River crossings and open coastal riding lead you to the isolated Río Bueno Post. You continue across remote terrain, fording rivers and navigating peat bogs with the sure-footed Creole horses. Wildlife sightings are common, including sea lions, wild horses and coastal birdlife. The day ends at historic Estancia Policarpo, a nationally recognised site rich in frontier history. Accommodation: Estancia Policarpo or similar

Today marks a shift in terrain as we leave the beaches behind and move into peat bogs, soft ground, and dense scrub forest, requiring several sections on foot alongside the horses. After crossing Laguna Centenario, the landscape opens into one of Tierra del Fuego’s richest bird habitats, where condors, cormorants, albatrosses, caracaras, oystercatchers, cauquenes, and great bustards are often seen soaring low above the coastline. In a dramatic coastal setting, birds wheel overhead as the Southern Ocean crashes nearby, and with luck we may also encounter sea lion colonies resting along the shore. Rounding Cape San Vicente, we make a diagonal crossing toward Bahía Thetis, where remnants of historic sealing operations and military outposts sit against a backdrop of vast ocean and, on clear days, distant views of Isla de los Estados. A full day to explore this eastern edge of Tierra del Fuego on foot. An optional hike leads to Cabo San Diego Lighthouse, crossing peatlands and coastal terrain with sweeping ocean views. The setting offers a true sense of standing at the edge of the world. Accommodation: Thetis Bay or similar

Today is reserved for rest and gentle exploration. Take time to walk the coastline, observe wildlife or simply absorb the stillness of this remote environment. It is a chance to slow the pace and reflect on the journey so far. Accommodation: Thetis Bay or similar

You begin the return journey, retracing your route across peatlands and coastal cliffs. The horses move confidently through challenging terrain as landscapes shift between forest, ocean and mountain backdrops. The day concludes back at Estancia Policarpo. Accommodation: Estancia Policarpo or similar

We saddle up and depart Caleta Falsa, retracing our route across the vast peatlands before reaching the formidable Policarpo River, the widest and most demanding crossing of the journey. Once safely across, the landscape opens into long, sweeping beaches where firm sand allows for exhilarating extended gallops, the wind at our backs and wild horses often running alongside us in effortless freedom. Midway, we pause at the old Duchess of Albania hut, a weathered relic built from shipwreck timbers, offering a powerful reminder of the sailors and settlers who once battled these same elements, an ideal place to rest, eat, and take in the scale of this remote coastline. The ride continues along grassy headlands and coastal tracks toward the Río Bueno Post, where simple comforts, a warm meal, and the deep quiet of the wilderness await. Accommodation: Rio Bueno Post or similar NB: From this day on, the load is lighter and less intense. For this reason, we will allow ourselves to perform faster walks (trots, gallops).

The day begins with time to explore the surroundings of Río Bueno Post, once a key hub for cattle operations managed by the legendary puesteros of the Mitre Peninsula. Riding north along the Atlantic coastline, we cross the Leticia River once more before beginning a steady climb onto Cape Leticia, where panoramic views open across the route we have travelled, an immense sweep of ocean, peatlands and distant mountains. From this elevated vantage point, the scale of Tierra del Fuego truly reveals itself, with the Andes, sub-Antarctic forests and endless coastline merging into a dramatic, wind-shaped landscape. As we descend, the pace quickens and we enjoy another long gallop along the beach before reaching Puesto La Chaira, where the day ends gathered around the wood stove, sharing stories and marking the final riding stages of this extraordinary journey. After farewelling the horses and local crew at Estancia María Luisa, you travel by vehicle back to Ushuaia. The transition from wilderness to town marks the end of an extraordinary frontier journey. Accommodation: Altos de Ushuaia or similar.

What's the benefit to you? More departure dates, and dates that reach their minimum numbers sooner, because bookings from several companies go into one group. Your guides live and work in the region.

Who is in your group? Expect a mix of travellers and nationalities, not only people who booked with World Expeditions.

What will we tell you when you book? We advise the name of the local partner at the time of booking, along with any terms of their own, such as an additional deposit. These apply alongside our Booking Terms and Conditions.

What we require

Most of our horse treks require R2 Intermediate as a minimum.

R1 · Beginner

You have been on a horse a handful of times. You can get a horse walking, steer it and stop it, and you can rise to the trot for a short stretch. Canter is either new to you or something you are still working on. Not suitable for our multi-day horse treks.

R2 · Intermediate

You are in control of a socialised horse at walk, trot and canter outside in a natural landscape and you can get on and off without help. You may not ride every week, but you don't need to think about riding basics. You have ridden in this environment several times in the past year.

R3 · Strong Intermediate

You ride regularly now, out in open country rather than in an arena, and six or more hours in the saddle doesn’t worry you. You can rise or sit to the trot, hold a canter without gripping the saddle to stay put, and stay in control on a horse that would rather go faster - over uneven ground, with other horses around you. Recommended experience level for most horse treks.

R4 · Advanced

You ride often, you’re fit, and you have an independent seat and quiet hands. You can control a forward-going or spirited horse at every pace, across rough and unpredictable country, and you’re comfortable galloping in company.

  3. Can you hold a rising trot for ten minutes without stopping?
  4. Are you happy to canter in open country, in a group, on a horse you’ve never sat on before?

Fewer than four, talk to us before you book.

Your declared level is what your handler uses to choose your horse, and a mismatch can’t be fixed three days into the steppe. If you’re between levels, or coming back after time out of the saddle, call us.

Every departure date advises whether the date is confirmed, and roughly how full it is. Here is what each one means.

Is the departure confirmed?

Guaranteed to go This departure has reached its minimum number and will run.
It is the point travellers should wait for before booking any non-refundable flights.
Close to guaranteed This appears only when a date is close to reaching minimum numbers. If it shows 1 or 2 to guaranteed, book as a pair on a date needing two and it reaches its minimum. Your booking confirms the date for everybody already booked.

How full is the date I am looking at?

Space is filling or Space is filling fast This date has bookings and places are still open. Filling fast means limited spots available, so don't leave your decision too late.
Closing soon Down to its last few places, or close enough to departure that we are finalising numbers. Still bookable online.
Closed Not bookable online - either full, or inside the notice we need to arrange permits, flights and logistics. Ask us anyway, you never know!

Will this trip actually go ahead, or could it be cancelled?

If a date shows Guaranteed to go, it runs regardless of further bookings.

What does 2 to guarantee mean?

It means two travellers are enough to confirm the departure. It could be 2 more to add to the group, or the date only needs 2 people to run. Either way, if you book for two people, the date will become guaranteed to run.

What happens if my departure does not reach minimum numbers?

You will know the status before you book. Every date on this page is labelled, and dates marked “Guaranteed to go” are running regardless of further bookings. Where a date has not reached its minimum we either offer a surcharge to operate for a smaller group size so it can still run, or we cancel it. We contact you directly either way.

Will I get my money back if you cancel a departure?

If we cancel a departure due to not meeting minimum trip numbers, you receive a full refund of everything you have paid us less any non recoverable costs, where insurance may cover you. We cannot refund money committed elsewhere – additional non refundable deposits advised at the time of booking, flights, visas, vaccinations, gear - which is why it is worth waiting for “Guaranteed to go” before booking other arrangements around this trip date. Please read our Booking Terms and Conditions before you book.

Why can't I book some dates online?

Each trip closes online a set time before departure. Permits, internal flights and hut or campsite bookings all have to be arranged before we take payment. Call or enquire as it might still be possible to organise last minute places.

The date I want is closed. What are my options and why does it say to enquire?

Cancellations happen and places do open up on closed dates, so it is worth being on our list. We can also tell you which nearby date on the same trip has space, which is usually the faster route.

None of these dates suit me. Can you run this trip on another date?

Yes, as a private departure. We can run this trip on a date you choose, for your own group - family, friends, a club, or in many cases, just for the two of you. Tell us when you want to travel and who is coming, and we will build it around that.

Yes. This is a true horse trek and requires confident riding experience with long days in the saddle.

You’ll need a good level of fitness and stamina, with some days involving long riding hours and occasional walking over soft terrain.

You’ll ride well-trained, sure-footed Creole horses, ideally suited to Patagonia’s rugged and remote landscapes.

Yes. The trek is fully guided by experienced local horsemen who manage horses, routes, and daily logistics.

Conditions can be unpredictable, with strong winds, rain, and cool temperatures common, flexibility and good gear are essential.

Once the ride begins, accommodation is in remote, rustic gaucho shelters. These are very basic and typically consist of one or two shared rooms with simple wooden bunks, mattresses and a stove for warmth.

No. The shelters are extremely remote and do not have electricity or running water.

No, there are no shower facilities at the refuges. We recommend bringing personal cleansing wipes to freshen up during the journey.

Yes. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag and should be comfortable sharing sleeping areas with other members of the group.

In poor weather, the shelters provide somewhere to dine, keep warm and dry clothing. In good conditions, evenings may be spent outside around a fire.

It is ideal for adventurous travellers who enjoy getting well off the beaten track and are happy to trade conventional comforts for a unique and authentic experience.
