Overview

The new Ngaro track on Whitsunday Island is located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area - one of Queensland’s iconic national parks. This walk allows you to experience it without a full-pack, and with more camp comforts.

The 32 kilometre track takes its name from the Ngaro people, the Traditional Custodians of this land. Ngaro families have played an integral role in supervising the track’s construction and shaping its interpretive elements, ensuring the cultural significance of Country is respectfully represented. Their stories and insights are shared with walkers through artwork placed along the route.

This three day fully-supported walk takes in the area’s most recognisable destinations, connecting the iconic silica sands of Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet, weaving across both coastal and inland terrain. Renowned for its outstanding scenic beauty, diverse natural features and rich cultural heritage, the track rewards walkers with constant vistas and countless photo opportunities showcasing the breathtaking Whitsundays. Built with natural materials, the track has been thoughtfully designed to complement the island’s rugged environment. Each section has varying challenges that culminate at architecturally-designed campsites complete with hardwood tent platforms, communal shelters and ‘loos-with-views’.

This more comfortable, supported walk is designed for walkers who want the full Ngaro Track experience with far less to carry and much more taken care of. Ideal for travellers who are short on time, prefer lighter loads, prepared camps and guides managing the daily logistics, so you can focus entirely on the walking, the views and the stories of Country.

You’ll carry between 8-12kg in your pack each day, while your guiding team handles camp setup, meal preparation and on-track support. It’s the perfect choice for those seeking an immersive, multi-day island walk without the demands of a full pack, offering comfort, ease and expert care in one of Queensland’s most spectacular landscapes.

The Ngaro Track combines cultural storytelling with spectacular landscapes - from Whitehaven’s white sands and mangrove wetlands to rainforest ridges and the dramatic Whitsunday Craig. It is a must-do experience for travellers seeking an active holiday enriched with a deeper cultural understanding of the Whitsundays.

Itinerary

Expand all | Collapse all

The trip will start with an early morning pick-up from Airlie Beach for our drive to Shute Harbour and the boat over to Whitsunday Island. The pick-up time from Airlie Beach and departure time from Shute Harbour are tide dependent, with the boat typically departing between 7am to 10am though more often at 7am or 8am. The boat journey typically takes 1-1.5 hours. The hotel pick-ups start from an hour before the boat departure e.g. from 6am or 7am so best to plan for the earlier time just in case. Exact timings will be confirmed to you closer to your trip departure, usually around 2 weeks prior. We’ll arrive by boat at the southern end of the popular Whitehaven Beach. Here we will visit the Whitehaven Beach lookout where the views set the scene of what’s to come before continuing along the shared use trail to Chance Bay Beach. The Ngaro Track starts just beyond Chance Bay and we’ll take our time to enjoy the space, read the information signs and connect with Country. From here we will start our walk through a unique ecosystem of rainforest growing from sand, with the track taking us deep into this vegetation. We’ll visit Bari dhili (Rock eye) viewpoint, and enjoy the view of the Whitsunday Craig and the Ngaro family art installation posts. Continuing south we will reach Bowarri yamba, meaning moon camp. Here, we arrive to our already setup camp and enjoy uninterrupted views of the nighttime sky. The architecturally designed shelter delivers plenty of space to relax, and a selection of camping decks and earth nodes offer differing views over the island and sea. Walking Time: 5 hours | Distance: 8.3km *You will need to arrive in Airlie Beach the day before your trip, ensuring that you arrive in time to attend the 3:30pm pre-trip briefing.

Meals: L,D

Beginning the day watching the sunrise over Silicon Bay and the south end of Whitsunday Island will set the tone for the vistas to come today. After breakfast we’ll don our backpacks and descend into a shady area dominated by hoop pines and grasses, known locally as the pines. We’ll then follow the contours of the coast to Craig point viewpoint and begin our steady climb up to Whitsunday Craig (353m). Gradually ascending, the track offers outstanding views of the imposing rock face before a short final climb with ladders and stairs leads to the lichen-encrusted rock platforms of the Whitsunday Craig. From here we’ll marvel at the incredible scenic views of the Whitsundays. The track steeply descends, down the Hill Inlet to Bilbili dhili viewpoint overlooking the unique samphire forbland. We will pause at Lower Craig and Crayfish Bay for photo-worthy lookouts and to reflect on the Ngaro family art installations that share cultural storylines, before continuing down onto the shores of Torres Herald Bay and our campsite for tonight, Dhula yamba (Tree camp). The campsite is set in a shaded, cool palm forest, where we can enjoy the views and sounds of the sheltered bay’s waters. Walking Time: 7 hours | Distance: 10.8km

Meals: B,L,D

For our final day we will walk from one side of the island to the other. From Dhula yamba (Tree camp) we will walk north to the Whitsunday’s only mangrove boardwalk, where you’ll come to cross a bridge over Hill Inlet. The undulating track crosses seasonal waterfalls and passes through gullies of forests and rocks. As we continue there will be creek crossings through magnificent palm groves where we’ll discover the seasonal Gumi (Ponds) wetland. Leaving our packs behind, we’ll head out to Murmuru bari (Round rock) viewpoint for a unique view of Hill Inlet. As the track continues we will enjoy stunning scenery throughout the day, culminating on the shores of world-renowned Hill Inlet. As the adventure draws to a close, we depart from Whitsunday Island via boat transfer back to Airlie Beach. The boat journey typically takes approximately 1-1.5 hours, allowing for ample time to reflect on the memories made and the beauty witnessed throughout this remarkable experience. Please be advised that boat transfer timings are subject to change based on weather conditions and tides, ensuring your safe return to Airlie Beach this evening. As a guideline only, the boat typically departs between 3:45-4:30pm, with drop-off to your post-tour hotel in Airlie Beach by 6:30pm though more often around 6pm. Walking Time: 8 hours | Distance: 12.8km

I am an avid hiker and camper, with thousands of kilometres and thousands of nights on trails throughout North America, Australia, Europe and Asia. The Ngaro Track sits up there as one of the most beautiful and spectacular trails.

The overall spectacular views from the highest peak on the island and the beautiful beaches made this hike exceptionally special.

My family and I opted for a supported hike option which provided a huge feeling of freedom without the extra weight of tents or food in our packs. The staff on the trail with us were incredibly friendly and helpful, providing not only amazing food three times a day but also providing a wealth of information about the area we were hiking.

A trip I would recommend to anyone who loves the feeling of being on a trail and the feeling of accomplishment when completing a hike.

This magical journey (which I was enormously lucky to be invited on through a media famil) is nothing short of superb. The indigenous stories we heard along the way, the wildlife we met, the cosy camps and the staggering vistas will forever be welded in my mind. Completely spectacular from beginning to end.

A perfect short 3-day/2-night track on Whitsunday Island with white beaches, blue water, mangroves and rainforest in communion with the indigenous history of the Ngaro People. This track and camps are thoughtfully and carefully crafted to minimise impact on the natural environment and preserve the spirit of the Ngaro People.

Fenna, our guide, and her partner Maeve were outstanding in every sense. Fenna's knowledge, expertise and love of the area is second to none.

Maeve welcomed us at camp at night with our tents all set up and prepared nibbles, hot drinks and a wholesome dinner and dessert. The girls bent over backwards to provide a genuine, caring and personal experience.

More comforts, but still feels like camping

During your walk you will stay at architecturally designed camps. Nestled amongst the environment of Whitsunday Island these wilderness camps offer a relaxing and comfortable stay in remote locations.

Our comfort camps are fully set up, so there is no need to worry about pitching or packing away tents. Each site has a large, covered area in which to relax at the end of a day of walking, with dining table and kitchen.

Sleep in comfort

The spacious tents offer plenty of room for two people and gear. Luggage should be kept in the tent at all times.

You will sleep on raised camp beds with comfortable mattresses each night. The stretcher beds raise you 40cm off the ground and offer a firm, flat base for the comfy mat.

Most groups are made up of a mixture of single participants and couples. If you book as a single traveller you will receive a free upgrade to your own private tent (limited and on a request basis).

Ablution Facilities

The toilet facilities are clean, comfortable and carefully designed to be 'loos with a view'. There are no shower facilities.

Expect rugged terrain with varied trail surfaces, steep sections and changing conditions

The Ngaro Track traverses a diverse range of landscapes, from coastal beaches and forest trails to rocky ridgelines and creek crossings. Walkers should expect uneven surfaces, steep ascents and descents, and sections that may become slippery or challenging after rain. The track includes a mix of Grade 3 and Grade 4–5 sections, and requires a good level of fitness, suitable footwear, and careful footing.

Ngaro Trail Surface | Anne Gelling

Creek beds and crossings

The trail includes natural creek beds that may be dry, damp, or flowing depending on recent rainfall. These areas can have uneven rocks, slippery surfaces, and changing conditions.

The Ngaro Track, Whitsunday Islands | Matt Horspool

Steep sections and stairs

Some sections involve steep climbs and descents, including stairways and reinforced track sections. Take your time, especially on downhill sections and in wet conditions.

Loose soil and uneven ground

Some areas feature uneven ground, including exposed rocks, tree roots, loose soil and steep slopes. These surfaces can affect footing and traction.

Ngaro Trail Surface | Anne Gelling

Beach and loose sand

Sections of the track follow sandy beaches and coastal areas. Loose sand can make walking more demanding, particularly over longer stretches, as footing can shift with each step.

Every departure date advises whether the date is confirmed, and roughly how full it is. Here is what each one means.

Is the departure confirmed?

Guaranteed to go This departure has reached its minimum number and will run.
It is the point travellers should wait for before booking any non-refundable flights.
Close to guaranteed This appears only when a date is close to reaching minimum numbers. If it shows 1 or 2 to guaranteed, book as a pair on a date needing two and it reaches its minimum. Your booking confirms the date for everybody already booked.

How full is the date I am looking at?

Space is filling or Space is filling fast This date has bookings and places are still open. Filling fast means limited spots available, so don't leave your decision too late.
Closing soon Down to its last few places, or close enough to departure that we are finalising numbers. Still bookable online.
Closed Not bookable online - either full, or inside the notice we need to arrange permits, flights and logistics. Ask us anyway, you never know!

Availability questions answered

Will this trip actually go ahead, or could it be cancelled?

If a date shows Guaranteed to go, it runs regardless of further bookings.

What does 2 to guarantee mean?

It means two travellers are enough to confirm the departure. It could be 2 more to add to the group, or the date only needs 2 people to run. Either way, if you book for two people, the date will become guaranteed to run.

What happens if my departure does not reach minimum numbers?

You will know the status before you book. Every date on this page is labelled, and dates marked “Guaranteed to go” are running regardless of further bookings. Where a date has not reached its minimum we either offer a surcharge to operate for a smaller group size so it can still run, or we cancel it. We contact you directly either way.

Will I get my money back if you cancel a departure?

If we cancel a departure due to not meeting minimum trip numbers, you receive a full refund of everything you have paid us less any non recoverable costs, where insurance may cover you. We cannot refund money committed elsewhere – additional non refundable deposits advised at the time of booking, flights, visas, vaccinations, gear - which is why it is worth waiting for “Guaranteed to go” before booking other arrangements around this trip date. Please read our Booking Terms and Conditions before you book.

Why can't I book some dates online?

Each trip closes online a set time before departure. Permits, internal flights and hut or campsite bookings all have to be arranged before we take payment. Call or enquire as it might still be possible to organise last minute places.

The date I want is closed. What are my options and why does it say to enquire?

Cancellations happen and places do open up on closed dates, so it is worth being on our list. We can also tell you which nearby date on the same trip has space, which is usually the faster route.

None of these dates suit me. Can you run this trip on another date?

Yes, as a private departure. We can run this trip on a date you choose, for your own group - family, friends, a club, or in many cases, just for the two of you. Tell us when you want to travel and who is coming, and we will build it around that.

You must arrive in Airlie Beach the day before the tour begins. The trip commences with a MANDATORY pre-departure briefing at 3:30pm on the day before departure. It is ESSENTIAL that you make your travel arrangements to enable you to attend this briefing. Day 1 then commences with an early morning pick-up from your pre-tour accommodation in Airlie Beach an hour before the marine transfer from Shute Harbour to Whitsunday Island. The pick-up and departure times are tide dependent - exact timings will be confirmed to you closer to your trip departure, usually around 2 weeks prior.

The purposefully built and architecturally designed campsites have composting toilets, sheltered communal areas for cooking and relaxing, tent platforms with tents set up for your arrival, and rainwater tanks (for drinking - your guides will supply filters to treat the water). There are also interpretive signs at each campsite with information about cultural and environmental stories. There are no shower facilities during the trip.

The Ngaro Track is a remote walk. Hazards include unfenced cliff edges, stinging trees, tropical insects, crocodiles and marine stingers. Your guides will ensure your safety throughout the trip and will give you a briefing on how to avoid these dangers.

The Ngaro Track was created to honour and celebrate the culture of the Ngaro People, protect fragile ecosystems, and provide a world-class, sustainable walking experience within the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.

The Ngaro People are the Traditional Owners of the Whitsunday Islands. Their culture, knowledge of Country, and songlines are woven throughout the Ngaro Track.

Ngaro families helped supervise construction, named sites along the track, and created interpretive artworks and story poles to ensure their knowledge is shared respectfully.

The Ngaro Track supports Queensland’s Destination 2045 vision for nature-based tourism.

On the final day of the tour, you will be transferred back to your post-tour accommodation in Airlie Beach. Return transfer times can vary depending on weather conditions, sea conditions and tides; however, you can generally expect to arrive between 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm.

Our preferred hotel in Airlie Beach for pre and post tour accommodation is the Mantra Club Croc Airlie Beach. Your reservations consultant will send you a quote on booking if you would like us to book the accommodation on your behalf. If you are booking your own pre and post tour accommodation, please ensure it is located at Airlie Beach, or on Shute Harbour Road, the main road from Cannonvale to Shute Harbour.

We recommend booking one night of accommodation in Airlie Beach before and at the end of the trip.

You will need a good level of fitness for this trek on the Ngaro track. You need to be capable and prepared to spend 5-7 hours each day trekking over rugged terrain with some steep ascents and descents. If you have any questions about your suitability please give us a call and speak with one of our staff members. We are more than happy to discuss additional information about what you can expect.

You will need to carry your own gear for the 3 days, including a small portion of the group food - it is not always necessary and is usually limited to a very small amount of fresh food, e.g. 1-2 tomatoes or 1 cucumber. On day 1 & 2 you will usually be required to carry your own lunch (provided) though this would also be a very small weight and volume.

You can fit the required gear in a medium size backpack (50-70L - not supplied), weighing approximately 8-10kg.

Any excess luggage can be stored at your pre/post tour accommodation in Airlie Beach.

Hiking poles can definitely assist you with going up and down the inclines and for stability. If you have not used them previously, we recommend that you do some training with them before you head out on the hike.

At the campsites you can charge devices through a USB port. Ports are very limited and shared between participants. We suggest bringing portable power chargers or fully charged spare batteries as back-up for your devices.

Not frequently. Sporadic reception can be received at some higher points depending on your carrier but the signal is usually very week.

The trekking season runs from April to October, when trekking conditions are most favourable. Winter is arguably the best time to experience the Ngaro track, as it offers prime trekking conditions, more stable temperatures and endlessly blue days.

  • Carry less, enjoy more camp comforts - our expert guides handle logistics, cooking, and camp operations
  • Relax at architecturally designed camp sites - complete with raised beds, mattresses and freshly prepared 3 course dinners
  • No single supplements for solo travellers
