Overview

This adventure takes place on ADNYAMATHANHA Country. We acknowledge their enduring connection with this Country, as they are the traditional custodians of this land, and we journey in respect of their Country.

When planning to head truly remote - far beyond even the main walking trails - camels are the ideal travel companions. Quiet, sure-footed and low impact, they offer a more sustainable and enjoyable way to explore the outback than travelling by 4WD. With your food, water and swags carried on traditional pack saddles, these ships of the desert, many of which featured in the film Tracks by Robyn Davidson, allow you to slow down, disconnect and gain a genuine sense of isolation.

Your journey begins by meeting the camel team and settling into camp life. There’s a swag tutorial, a safety briefing, and a BBQ dinner finished with a local specialty for dessert. Each morning, you’ll help roll swags and watch the camels being saddled with gear in the traditional way. One camel is saddled for optional riding during the walk.

This is a fully camel-supported walk with no vehicle backup. The days unfold slowly and rhythmically as you journey across classic Flinders Ranges terrain, through creek beds lined with ancient river red gums, past dramatic rock faces, and into gorges so remote they remain unnamed. Along the way, discover fossilised reefs and stromatolites, and spot native wildlife like yellow-footed rock wallabies and the striking red-barred dragon. Valleys of acacia and cassia add seasonal colour to the landscape.

Each day ends in a bush camp, where camels are unloaded, swags are rolled out, and meals are prepared over the fire. Evenings are spent under a vast night sky, ideal for stargazing and learning about the constellations that have guided desert travellers for generations.

At the end of the trek, enjoy a night in a nearby outback community with a proper bed, a hearty dinner, and time to reflect on your journey through one of Australia’s most remote and untouched landscapes - all made possible by the steady presence of your camel team.

This morning you will be collected from Adelaide Central Bus Station at 8.30am to arrive at the camel farm in Blinman between 3pm and 4pm. The first evening will be spent packing your gear bag and meeting the camel family. There will also be a swag tutorial and safety briefing. Dinner is BBQ with a local speciality for dessert. *If you are arriving by car, it is possible to drive directly to the camp farm in Blinman to meet your guides & group with plenty of parking available onsite - please advise your reservations consultant in advance - directions will be provided. Travel time from Adelaide: 7 hours.

In the morning breakfast will be served and swags rolled. The camels are loaded with head cameleer Ryan demonstrating traditional pack saddles which are loaded on the camels with all the equipment for the trek. Each camel is ‘hooshed’ , brushed, dressed with blankets and then fitted with their saddle and gear. A packed lunch is prepared before departing around lunch time for the first walking day. A camp is selected in the afternoon, the camels are unloaded, swags set up, kitchen set up and dinner prepared on the fire.

The trek travels over some of the classic scenery of the Flinders Ranges. Creek beds lined with old, gnarled river red gums that inspired artists such as Hans Heysen. A perfect opportunity for photography and bird watching.

Walk through valleys and rolling hills discovering ancient fossilised reefs and stromatolites. Explore deep into some of the unknown and unnamed gorges with towering cliff faces and narrow passes. Become mesmerised by the majestic camel string as they meander through this iconic scenery.

Learn about native flora and fauna that is unique to semi-arid parts of the country. Ryan, an expert in botany, zoology, geology and history shares his expertise as you pass through valleys of acacia and cassias. Keep an eye out for the endemic yellow footed rock wallaby and exquisite red barred dragon. After dinner around the campfire learn about the stars and constellations in one of the best viewing areas in the country.

The camels are loaded in the morning for the final day of walking back to the camel farm for lunch. There is then a short transfer into Blinman for a relaxing afternoon to do as you wish. Take a historic copper mine tour, have a drink in the bar or rest in your room in the North Blinman Hotel before dinner in the restaurant.

Breakfast is in locally owned and delicious The Miners Crib Bakery before transport to Adelaide. We usually arrive back in Adelaide between 4-5pm. We recommend spending the night in Adelaide (not included) and flying out the following morning due to potential traffic delays. The trip concludes on arrival back in Adelaide. Travel time 7 hours

Extra trip info

5 nights camping and 1 night hotel

The first 5 nights of the trip will be spent camping. You will receive a swag (canvas bed roll) that contains a mattress, tarpaulin and a camping chair. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag. The swag will be rolled up each morning and loaded on to the camels. The last night of the trip will be spent at the North Blinman Hotel.

While you are at the camel farm there is limited reception with Telstra and Optus. While you are on the trek there will be no phone reception. For the last night in Blinman there is great phone reception.

If you have any extra luggage you don't want to bring on the trek you can leave this at the camel farm. This will be stored and will be ready for you to collect at the end of the trip.

Each night we will provide one glass of white/red wine with dinner. If you would like to drink more you will need to bring your own alcohol. This will need to be purchased in advance and it cannot be in glass bottles. Any extra alcohol will need to be in plastic/aluminium and will need to fit in your provided bags.

Yes, good footwear is essential. Your boots should be sturdy enough to tackle the rocky terrain of the Flinders as well as being comfortable to walk in all day. Please make sure that boots are well worn in (especially if buying new ones) and will last the journey if you are bringing your favourite pair. It is also recommended you bring along a change of shoes to wear at night in camp - this could be thongs or sandals.

It is hard to say the exact distance that you will walk each day as this depends on the amount of fodder for the camels. You should expect to walk approximately 15km. Even on short walking days you will still spend most of the day on your feet. You will need to have the stamina to do so.

The tour starts with a morning pick up in Adelaide on day 1, so we recommend arriving in Adelaide the day before the tour startts.

The camels will be loaded up with all of the clients luggage and equipment, food and water that is required for the trip.
