Overview

Botswana Leopard Trail & Kalahari is a 17 day camping expedition designed for travellers who want to experience Botswana from within its wild landscapes, not from behind lodge walls.

Begin in the remote Central Kalahari, camping under expansive desert skies and exploring alongside a local San tracker who shares traditional knowledge of this harsh and beautiful environment. Continue north through Makgadikgadi and into the Okavango Delta, camping wild on a remote island and exploring by mokoro and on foot. In Moremi and Savuti, extended game drives and self sufficient camps allow you to experience diverse habitats in depth, far from permanent infrastructure.

From the vast Kalahari to the waterways of the Okavango Delta and the elephant-rich plains of Chobe, this journey brings you closer to the landscapes and wildlife. For those open to adventure and authentic bush camping, the rewards are unforgettable.

Itinerary

The safari begins in Maun, where your guide will meet you at approximately 7:30 AM at a pre-arranged meeting point. From there, you will travel 120km to a private reserve located on the northern border of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Upon arrival, you'll set up camp and enjoy a traditional bush lunch. Spend the afternoon settling into the remote wilderness and soaking up the tranquillity of the Kalahari. As the sun sets, savour your first evening under the stars with a hearty dinner and a briefing about the days ahead. Drive 120km/4 hours

Meals: L,D

Today is dedicated to exploring the area in depth. Head out on game drives in search of desert-adapted wildlife such as oryx, springbok, eland, and predators including lion, cheetah, and the elusive brown hyena. You’ll also take part in a guided nature walk led by a local San tracker, who will share their deep knowledge of the land and offer unique insights into their fascinating culture and survival skills in the Kalahari environment. In the evening, return to camp and enjoy the wide open spaces, clear night skies, and the peaceful beauty of the desert.

Meals: B,L,D

You will wake up as the sun rises and enter the pristine wilderness of the largest game reserve in Botswana. The next three days will be exploring the undeveloped wilderness of the northern region of the Kalahari, moving from camp to camp. Savour the vast open spaces, clear night skies and uninterrupted beauty on game drives and at camp. Drive 80km/3-4 hours

Meals: B,L,D

After we break camp, we will drive to the Makgadikgadi area. You will spend the night at a camp on the edge of the Makgadikgadi National Park, overlooking the Boteti River in Khumaga village. Enjoy an afternoon game drive into Makgadikgadi National Park. Drive 180km/4-5 hours

Meals: B,L,D

After an early morning breakfast you will pass by Maun town for drinks shopping essential for the remainder of your safari. Your adventure will take you from Maun to the Okavango Delta, a special corner of paradise. Once you have reached the edge of the Delta, you will transfer your equipment to motorboats and cruise along the narrow papyrus-lined channels enjoying the exquisite birdlife of the region as well as the stunning landscape. Deeper in the Delta you will meet the local polers with their mokoro (a traditional dugout canoe) and enjoy a tranquil transfer to an island. You will spend two days exploring this beautiful area on mokoro excursions and taking guided walks on the islands and floodplains of the Okavango. NOTE: You will leave your main luggage in the trailer and will need to pack a smaller bag (small backpack, hand luggage) with what you need for the 2 days on the island. Transfers from the mainland to the island where you will stay are done on traditional dugout canoes (mokoro) which cannot accommodate large bags. Your main luggage will safely remain in the vehicle that will be parked in a secured area while you are on the island. Drive 210km/5 hours

Meals: B,L,D

Inspired by the beauty of the Okavango, you move on our next camping base located outside Moremi Game Reserve. Drive 50km/1-2 hours

Meals: B,L,D

In the early morning, we will drive through to Moremi Game Reserve (100km, 5-7 hrs), one of the best wilderness areas of Botswana which covers swamp and dry areas. The next three days will be spent searching for the wide variety of wildlife and birds that this area is renowned for while absorbing the sounds and beauty of this region. Game drives in the early morning as the sun rises and in the late afternoon as the sun sets will be the norm. After your morning game drive you will return to camp for lunch and a siesta. On Day 12 you will move campsites to explore a different area of this diverse park (2 nights in Western Moremi and 1 night in Eastern Moremi).

Meals: B,L,D

Chobe National Park, with its diverse and striking landscapes, will be your next destination. As you continue your search for wildlife, you will traverse the drier region of Savuti where bull elephants dot the plains (120km, 7-8 hrs). You will then head northwards to the Chobe River where your game drives will meander along the banks of the river, followed by the call of the majestic African Fish Eagle Drive 170km/5-6 hrs.

Meals: B,L,D

After a short morning game drive you will then drive to Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe side (Visa required), where you will spend the night at a comfortable lodge. In the afternoon there will be time to visit the thunderous Victoria Falls and shop for curios. Dinner will be at your own expense at the lodge. Drive 100km/3 hours

Meals: B

The safari officially ends at 10:00am today. We are happy to arrange post-tour accommodation, activities and transfers to Victoria Falls Airport or lodges, Livingstone airport or lodges or Kasane, Botswana, at an additional cost.

This trip was amazing. We had an experience that we never could have got from staying in a lodge. Yes the nights were cold and a tent is not luxury but I would not have wanted to miss a second of it. If you are open to some adventure and bush camping then I highly recommend this trip.

The trip was brilliant! Botswana is a wonderful country with lovely people and a vast variety of wildlife that can be observed in close proximity, without the crowds usually present at other destinations. The vehicle was very comfortable (plenty of leg room), and so were the tents (easy to assemble), The guide was highly skilled and experienced, which gave me peace of mind so I could focus on the beauty that surrounded me wherever we went, and the chef did wonders with the pretty limited supplies available. Will definitely be back!

This was a 10 out of 10 trip! We went to experience wildlife at close hand and we certainly got that thanks to our fantastic tour leader/driver Shabba, whose ability to spot animals was unbelievable. The camp assistant O.T was cheerful and friendly and prepared good quality meals. Many of us bonded strongly. The immensity of the Kalahari, the night sky, the sense of solitude, the night "visitors" to our camps .. We will never forget this trip.

This trip was even more exciting than we imagined. Bush camping certainly brings one close to the wildlife and their habits, and we twice saw and heard lions near our campsite. Hippos grunted during the night and leopards and hyenas visited while we slept. Our leader, a fountain of knowledge on the history and environment of Botswana, and a great spotter, made us feel safe and went to great lengths to help us experience the diversity of wildlife and vegetation. The rains were early and constant but the bush was luxuriant, many animals were having young and Victoria Falls were spectacular on the Zambian side. Camping with the locals in the Okavango Delta was also a wonderful experience. Highly recommended.

Add this trip to your bucket list! It is absolutely magical, and the wild camping enables you to be up close and personal with all the animals you could ever dream of. The local team were absolutely wonderful, and I would go again tomorrow.

A fantastic trip - saw an amazing array & number of animals including my highlight, leopards. I was so glad to have wild camped, an experience that will stay with me forever: listening to the roar oflions & the low rumbling of elephants and looking at the tracks in the morning to see what animals have passed through camp during the night - amazing. Victoria Falls was awesome & the optional helicopter flight was a highlight worth every penny. Forget the trips that other companies do that stay in lodges do this one & you'll remember it for the rest of your life. Botswana is a fabulous country.

I would like to praise World Expeditions with the outstanding and well-organised operation of this tour. We had an exceptional guide and camp assistant, had a fantastic time and didn't want the trip to end. I would highly recommend this trip to everyone.
