Overview

The W Trek in Torres del Paine National Park is one of the world’s most iconic hikes - and for good reason. Located in the heart of Chilean Patagonia, this legendary trail zigzags through a wilderness of jagged granite towers, glacial valleys and vivid blue lakes. It’s a raw, elemental landscape shaped by ice, wind and time - and best explored on foot.

Named after the shape it traces across the Cordillera del Paine - three deep valleys forming a giant ‘W’ - this route connects some of the park’s most spectacular highlights. Hike to the base of the Torres del Paine towers - a dramatic amphitheatre of stone and sky. Traverse the French Valley - where hanging glaciers pour down sheer rock walls. Finish at the Grey Glacier - a shimmering wall of ancient ice flowing from the Southern Patagonian Icefield.

A highlight of this trek is staying at EcoCamp Patagonia, a unique, sustainable dome camp located inside the park. Standard domes include shared bathrooms, with the option to upgrade to superior or suite domes for added comfort. Meals are served in communal domes with panoramic views of the towers, and there are shared spaces to relax, socialise or plan the days ahead. It’s an immersive and memorable way to experience the park while treading lightly on the landscape.

Some nights may be spent at fully equipped campsites near traditional refugios - public mountain lodges offering heated communal dining areas, shared bathrooms and hearty meals. These comfortable, social hubs provide welcome shelter after a rewarding day on the trail.

The trip begins with you being picked up from your hotel in Punta Arenas or Punta Arenas airport (please arrive before 11am) and driven to EcoCamp Patagonia, which is located in the world-famous Torres del Paine National Park. Arrival time is 5.30pm and you wil be provded with a boxed lunch for the journey. (Alternatively, you can start your trip in Calafate or Puerto Natales.) En route we make a stop in Puerto Natales, a small, lively town on the shores of "Seno de Ultima Esperanza", where we enjoy a hearty local lunch. The journey is very scenic, with wild birds and wonderful landscapes. The day ends with our arrival and overnight stay at EcoCamp Patagonia, which is nestled in the heart of Torres del Paine National Park and boasts a prime view of the majestic Torres. Sunset is usually around 11pm during the summer months. For this reason, upon arrival there will still be enough daylight for you to admire the Patagonian steppe with its guanacos and snow-peaked mountain horizon. Overnight: EcoCamp Patagonia Please note: The two nearby airports are Punta Arena and Puerto Natales. Puerto Natales is only two hours from Torres del Paine, however, there are only a few flights offered each week. Punta Arenas is about five hours from the Torres del Paine National Park, but there are more flights available. We offer two transfers per day, traveling from EcoCamp to Punta Arenas and passing through Puerto Natales. If you come from El Calafate, our regular transfer from there uses a public bus leaving early in the morning and therefore you would have to be there the previous day. Please advise us at the time of booking where you would like to start this trip so joining arrangements can be made.

The experience of walking in the Torres del Paine National Park will leave you awe-inspired by the wonderful scenery. It is worth remembering that the Andes is the youngest chain of mountains in the world. One can imagine the great pressures and movements of the earth that created these spectacular peaks. We begin our Patagonian adventure with a pleasant walk through the sinuous Cuernos Trail which leads us alongside the beautiful Lake Nordenskjold. During this warm-up walk we will have the opportunity to admire the park’s exquisite flora and fauna, as we enjoy the magnificent views of the park’s central lakes and the Paine’s Horns, majestic black horn-like peaks of slate atop gray granite which crown the center of the Massif. The trek ends at Refugio Los Cuernos, a small and cozy mountain refuge located on the shores of Lake Nordenskjold. Alternatively, the trek ends at Domo el Francés, located between Cuernos and Italiano camping sites, with an amazing view of Nordenskjöld Lake. The evening is free for relaxing and enjoying dinner. Please be aware that accommodation for tonight and tomorrow will be camping in tents, the campsite provides bathroom facilities. Camping is located near traditional mountain huts, referred to as refugios, these are open to the public visiting Torres del Paine. Refugios are heated and feature comfortable dining areas where plentiful meals are served. Tent accommodation is based on double occupancy. If you would prefer an upgrade to a shared dorm (based on availability), please advise your reservations consultant. Accommodation: Camping area at Cuernos or Domo El Francés (depending on availability) Elevation gain: 300m / 1148ft

After breakfast at Refugio Los Cuernos, we will begin the challenging trek to Valle Frances (French Valley), along a steep trail that leads to the very heart of the Paine Massif. How far in we go depends on our group's trekking rhythm. A swifter walk will lead us to the hanging bridge over the French River, located at the foot of the south-east face of the Massif, where we will be treated to fantastic views of the valley. We will then continue to ascend towards the upper section of the valley where we will be able to marvel at the extensive mass of the valley's geological formations: Hoja (Blade), Máscara (Mask), Espada (Sword), Catedral (Cathedral), Aleta de Tiburón (Shark’s Fin) and the magnificent Fortaleza (Fortress). After our upward trek, we will pause for a picnic and relax a while. This day's trek will end as we descend through an undulating terrain of mixed grassland and light forest which will take us to Refugio Paine Grande. Accommodation: Camping at Paine Grande Elevation gain: 820m / 2690ft N.B. An optional trek to Mirador Britanico may be available (4km / 2.4mi) depending on weather and group pace. Please be aware that the weather in Patagonia can be difficult to deal with at times. Thus, we reserve the right to change the order of the days at the discretion of the trip guide and based on operational considerations. The trip guide can modify, change or eliminate part of this itinerary based on safety/weather considerations.

Today we will hike from Paine Grande Refugio along the shores of Lake Pehoe to the northern side of the glacially beautiful Lake Grey. We will feast on a picnic lunch before boarding the boat that sails right to the huge, crystalline facade of Glacier Grey, where we will have plenty of time to marvel at the calving glacier. From the southern end of Glacier Grey, we will transfer to EcoCamp. Boat trips across the lake may occasionally be cancelled due to weather conditions of the region or if the required minimum of passengers is not reached. If either is the case, we will trek up to the sightseeing point and profit from wonderful, panoramic views of the Glacier instead. Then we will return on foot to Paine Grande and take a catamaran to Pudeto’s dock, where we will be picked up and driven to EcoCamp. Accommodation: EcoCamp Patagonia Elevation gain: 271m / 889ft Please note: During Low and Shoulder Season (October and April), the boat trip to Glacier Grey may be canceled, if this is the case, the itinerary will be modified to depart from Paine Grande through the Pehoé Lake navigation or Las Carretas trail.

The goal of our fifth day of this 7-day trip is to complete the most famous trekking trail in Torres del Paine National Park. We will walk from the campsite towards Hostería Las Torres before ascending to Ascencio Valley on the Tower's eastern face. Mountain ridges, beech forests and small rivers line the scenic walk towards the valley. Our big challenge comes in the form of the steep moraine, a huge mass of boulders which will lead us to that iconic base-view of the Towers - Three gigantic granite monoliths, the remains of a great cirque sheared away by the forces of glacial ice. After a tough uphill climb, the Towers eventually come into full view, rising majestically before us, with the glacial lake visible below. After feasting on the view and our picnic, we backtrack along the same trail through Ascencio Valley and return to EcoCamp for a well-deserved dinner. Accommodation: EcoCamp Patagonia Elevation gain: 1023m / 3356ft

After breakfast, we drive west alongside Lake Nordenskjöld, stopping at scenic viewpoints along the way before reaching Salto Grande Waterfall. From here, we set out on foot for Los Cuernos Viewpoint, an easy 7km / 4.3mi return walk with wonderful views across the lake and towards the Paine Massif. After lunch near Lake Pehoé, there’s another walk to look forward to, this time up to Condor Lookout. It’s a shorter 2.5km / 1.6mi return walk, but the trail is considerably steeper and more exposed. At the lookout, we’re rewarded with panoramic views over Lake Pehoé, the Paine River and the western reaches of the park. We allow additional time depending on conditions to enjoy the views at both lookouts. Afterwards, we return to EcoCamp for our farewell dinner. This morning we board an early morning vehicle, sit back, relax and enjoy the scenic drive to Punta Arenas, (on time to catch the evening flight to Santiago if required) and the trip concludes. Our tour was on sold to another supplier, which wasn't made clear to us at the beginning, so WE had nothing to do with it's delivery. The information provided by WE regarding the tour differed in some areas to that of the actual provider so that was frustrating.

Stay at our Ecocamp in Torres del Paine

EcoCamp Patagonia - these domes are immersed in the park’s wilderness and provide cozy accommodation. EcoCamp has 25 bedroom domes in total and 3 large community domes where guests eat breakfast and dinner overlooking the towers and unwind in the bar in the evening or plan excursions in the library. Accommodation is in standard domes but upgrades to superior or suite domes are possible. Please ask us for details. Standard domes include shared bathrooms which are large, comfortable and gender divided.

Standard Dome

The Standard dome was the first dome we made in EcoCamp and is also the smallest.

Nestled amid the hilltop splendor of EcoCamp, these charming Standard Domes peek out from the lush foliage, inviting guests into a cozy, intimate space. Inside, you'll find a snug haven with a large, warm bed. One of the standout features of the Standard Dome is its skylight, offering a breathtaking view of the stars as you drift off to sleep.

Superior Dome

The Superior Domes, spacious and comfortable, are the perfect choice for trekkers seeking a bit more space and comfort at the end of a long day's trekking. They are the ideal upgrade from a Standard Dome for those doing the 'W' trek, offering heating, a private bathroom, and a more spacious interior. Each Superior Dome is equipped with comfortable queen-size or twin beds, a propane heater, and a private bathroom with a sophisticated composting toilet.

Suite Dome

Inside, you'll find a cozy double bed or twin beds, ensuring a restful night's sleep. A contemporary low-emission wood stove keeps the space warm, while locally crafted decorations add a touch of authentic charm. For peace of mind, a safe box is provided for your valuables, and the dome also provides electricity.

Suite Dome Loft

Enjoy all the space and luxury of a Suite Dome with an added loft—ideal for families or larger groups. The main level features a comfortable double bed (or twin beds), cozy chairs, and a convenient table. Upstairs, the loft offers a spacious and inviting double bed. This Suite Dome accommodates up to four guests in total.

Yoga Dome

EcoCamp’s Yoga Dome sits perched on the edge of the EcoCamp site, overlooking the Patagonian pampas. It is the ideal space to practice yoga with daily classes twice a day. Community Dome

Community Domes provide a meeting place for breakfast and again at the end of the day when groups share an evening cocktail and tasty Chilean dinner at communal tables in the dining room

Close to guaranteed This appears only when a date is close to reaching minimum numbers. If it shows 1 or 2 to guaranteed, book as a pair on a date needing two and it reaches its minimum. Your booking confirms the date for everybody already booked.

How full is the date I am looking at?

Will this trip actually go ahead, or could it be cancelled?

If a date shows Guaranteed to go, it runs regardless of further bookings.

What does 2 to guarantee mean?

It means two travellers are enough to confirm the departure. It could be 2 more to add to the group, or the date only needs 2 people to run. Either way, if you book for two people, the date will become guaranteed to run.

What happens if my departure does not reach minimum numbers?

You will know the status before you book. Every date on this page is labelled, and dates marked “Guaranteed to go” are running regardless of further bookings. Where a date has not reached its minimum we either offer a surcharge to operate for a smaller group size so it can still run, or we cancel it. We contact you directly either way.

Will I get my money back if you cancel a departure?

If we cancel a departure due to not meeting minimum trip numbers, you receive a full refund of everything you have paid us less any non recoverable costs, where insurance may cover you. We cannot refund money committed elsewhere – additional non refundable deposits advised at the time of booking, flights, visas, vaccinations, gear - which is why it is worth waiting for “Guaranteed to go” before booking other arrangements around this trip date. Please read our Booking Terms and Conditions before you book.

Why can't I book some dates online?

Each trip closes online a set time before departure. Permits, internal flights and hut or campsite bookings all have to be arranged before we take payment. Call or enquire as it might still be possible to organise last minute places.

The date I want is closed. What are my options and why does it say to enquire?

Cancellations happen and places do open up on closed dates, so it is worth being on our list. We can also tell you which nearby date on the same trip has space, which is usually the faster route.

None of these dates suit me. Can you run this trip on another date?

Yes, as a private departure. We can run this trip on a date you choose, for your own group - family, friends, a club, or in many cases, just for the two of you. Tell us when you want to travel and who is coming, and we will build it around that.

EcoCamp is the perfect mix of adventure, environmental sustainability and comfort in the wilderness. We offer good quality food and wine in a friendly hospitable atmosphere, with innovative accommodation in the world’s first geodesic dome hotel. We have the utmost respect for the park’s fragile environment, using only green energy and a sophisticated waste recycling system. Our trekking guides are of the highest quality and are specialists in the park’s geography, geology and fauna.

The vast unbroken stretch of ocean to the west and south of the South American continent leaves the Patagonian Andes very exposed to the winds that circle the Antarctic landmass, making the weather hard to predict. Fine weather may deteriorate almost without warning; even in summer (December to March), you should come prepared to find strong cold winds (up to 130 km/hr) and rainfall. The temperature in generally cool but can vary. In summer, the temperature during the day averages at around 11ºC (51ºF). Daytime temperatures range from 2 to 24ºC (36 to 75ºF) and during the night it can range from -5 to -1°C (23 to 30°F).

For the regular pick up from Punta Arenas airport, we always recommend taking the early flight arriving at Punta Arenas before 11 AM. For the regular drop-off, we recommend booking a flight leaving Punta Arenas airport after 3 PM. If coming in from Puerto Natales you must arrive before 4pm and depart after 11am.

EcoCamp’s Standard Domes are specifically designed to naturally absorb heat from the sun during the day and circulate it throughout the dome at night so there’s no need to resort to artificial heating. The temperature will vary depending on conditions outside and fleece blankets are supplied to make sure you’re completely snug at all times. Extra blankets are also available on request.

We've put a lot of effort into developing a menu of fresh, hearty meals that use ingredients from our very own organic garden or from nearby local producers. Our all-inclusive programs include breakfast, box lunch and dinner. EcoCamp Patagonia is proud to be veggie and vegan-friendly, with a great alternative menu of filling and varied vegetarian meals. Just be sure to let them know about your specific dietary needs in advance.
