CITIZEN SCIENce PROJECTS

Thanks to Dr Karl, we've been liaising with Dr Alex Fraser from the Antarctic Climate & Ecosystems Cooperative Research Centre (ACE CRC) and the University of Tasmania (UTAS) about real Citizen Science projects.

The projects below have been earmarked by various research scientists and PhD students and while on the voyage you can assist them by collecting valuable field data that will assist them with their research. All it requires from you is either taking a picture (with a phone or camera that has geo-tagging built in) or noting down your observations.

If it all sounds a little confusing, don't worry. It's purely optional and Dr Karl will be on hand to show you what to do and answer any questions you may have.

1) ASPeCt sea ice observations from the bridge: Dr Karl will have a laptop with special ASPeCt software provided by UTAS where we will record any sea ice observations. All this project requires is observing sea ice properties and noting down the co-ordinates of where you observe sea ice into the program.

2) Georeferenced  photos of sea ice: This is an active area of research and the UTAS team are searching for more photos to help with the science. They are seeking photos (time-stamped with cameras correctly set to UTC, combined with the ship's position log) of a specific type of sea ice where the waves have washed onto the ice, clearing the snow and creating a biological algae community on top.

3) Digital elevation model (DEM) of an iceberg: Created from "structure from motion" techniques (watch this video to learn more) this project is a simple and fun one, where basically we'll get some people in a zodiac to circumnavigate an iceberg to take lots of pictures. We'll organise to send them back to the researchers so they can transform them into a digital elevation map. Internet connection permitting, you'll be able to watch the video made on the boat before the cruise ends.

4) Identification and logging of marine mammals/birds:  No doubt you'll be watching out for wildlife on the bridge anyway, so why not "science up" the experience by recording what you see and sharing it with the researchers!
