Overview

A perfect adventure in Kyrgyzstan for those looking to experience the best of the country along with a trekking aspect. Laid in the picturesque foothills of the Pamir - the Kozho-Kelen gorge and the Alai Valley - the first trekking portion is gentle to help you acclimatize. The second part is when we climb the colossal Yukhin Peak, reaching up to 5130 metres. This peak is in a majestic area of the Lenin Peak and a very popular gathering place for climbing among climbers all over the world. Accommodation is in comfortable camps along the way to the top with visits to the surrounding area.

Upon arrival at Manas International Airport, you will be met by a local World Expeditions representative and transferred to your hotel in Bishkek. Early check-in is included, allowing you time to freshen up and relax after your flight. Following some rest, we begin exploring Kyrgyzstan's capital, situated at approximately 800 metres (2,600 feet) above sea level, with a visit to the bustling Osh Bazaar. This lively market offers a fascinating insight into local life, with stalls selling traditional handicrafts, fresh produce, dried fruits and souvenirs. We then continue to the city centre for a guided walking tour, beginning at Ala-Too Square, the city's main square and an important reminder of Kyrgyzstan's Soviet heritage. Here, we visit the Manas Monument, dedicated to the legendary national hero of the Kyrgyz people, and see the State Flag, where we may witness the changing of the Guard of Honour. Our walk continues past the Monument to the Revolution of 2010, the White House and the Lenin statue, before exploring the historic square and its surrounding landmarks, including the Fine Arts Gallery and the Kurmanjan Datka Monument. We then transfer to Victory Square, a memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives during World War II. Lunch and dinner will be enjoyed at local cafés, providing an opportunity to sample traditional Kyrgyz cuisine. Today we enjoy a full-day excursion to Ala Archa National Park, located approximately 50 minutes south of Bishkek. Established in 1976, the park is renowned for its dramatic mountain scenery, alpine valleys, cascading waterfalls and spectacular views of the Tian Shan Mountains. Our introductory walk takes us through this beautiful national park, providing an excellent opportunity to stretch our legs and begin acclimatising to the higher elevations we will encounter later in our journey. Travelling from Bishkek, situated at approximately 800m (2,600ft), we reach the park at around 2,000m (6,562ft), where we follow scenic mountain trails towards one of its picturesque waterfalls. Along the way, we enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding alpine landscapes, rugged valleys and towering snow-capped peaks of the Tian Shan Mountains. This rewarding walk provides a wonderful introduction to Kyrgyzstan's mountain environment and a taste of the spectacular scenery awaiting us on our upcoming trek. After our walk, we return to Bishkek, where the remainder of the evening is at leisure. This morning we take an early flight to Osh, known as the ‘Southern Capital’ of Kyrgyzstan and the gateway to expeditions into the spectacular Pamir-Alay Mountains, including Lenin Peak. One of Central Asia's oldest cities, Osh is a fascinating blend of bustling bazaars, winding streets and traditional cafés, set against a dramatic mountain backdrop. Upon arrival, we transfer to our hotel before setting out to explore the city. We visit the lively Osh Bazaar, one of Central Asia's most famous markets, where colourful stalls offer everything from fresh produce and spices to traditional handicrafts and trekking essentials. It's also an ideal opportunity to pick up any last-minute supplies for our upcoming adventure. We then visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Sulayman-Too Sacred Mountain, which rises prominently above the city and has been an important place of pilgrimage for centuries. Here, we explore its historic sites, including the cave museum, before making our way to the summit for panoramic views across Osh and the surrounding landscape. We may also see the small Babur Mosque, associated with the founder of the Mughal Empire. This evening, our guide will provide a briefing on the upcoming trek and help us prepare for our journey into the mountains. Accommodation: Sunrise Hotel or similar (970m / 3,182ft)

After breakfast, we depart Osh for the scenic drive to Kozho-Kelen village, travelling through spectacular mountain landscapes, wildflower-filled valleys and traditional shepherd settlements. Along the way, we pass the Papan Reservoir, an important water source for Osh and surrounding agricultural areas. Upon arrival in Kozho-Kelen, situated at approximately 2,270m (7,448ft), we settle into our local family-run guesthouse before setting out on an acclimatisation walk. Our trail leads through narrow mountain canyons towards the Blue Grotto and a waterfall, passing striking rock formations and colourful cliffs along the way. This walk provides an excellent opportunity to begin adjusting to the higher altitude while enjoying the beautiful surroundings. We return to our guesthouse for a well-earned rest and dinner, experiencing the warm hospitality of our local hosts. Accommodation: Local guesthouse (2,270m / 7,448ft) Walking: 8km / 5 miles, approximately 2–3 hours Driving: 100km / 62 miles, approximately 4 hours

After breakfast, we begin our trek along a scenic mountain river towards the base of Dzhyptyk Pass. The trail winds through a beautiful alpine landscape of towering mountains, spruce forests, juniper bushes and striking rock formations, with spectacular views unfolding as we gradually gain altitude. As we continue through the valley, we experience the traditional Kyrgyz concept of jailoo, the high mountain pastures where local shepherds bring their livestock to graze during the summer months. These expansive alpine meadows, surrounded by rugged peaks and distant snow-capped mountains, offer a wonderful insight into the natural beauty and traditional pastoral life of Kyrgyzstan. Our route gradually ascends through this picturesque landscape, with sweeping views across the valley and surrounding mountain ranges. Upon reaching our campsite at the foot of Dzhyptyk Pass, we settle into our tents and enjoy a well-earned dinner surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the Pamir-Alay Mountains. Today we cross the spectacular Dzhyptyk Pass and descend into the remote Alai Valley, enjoying breathtaking mountain scenery and expansive views of the Pamir Mountains. Our trek begins with a gradual ascent through beautiful alpine meadows towards Dzhyptyk Gorge, before the trail becomes steeper as we climb a rocky scree slope towards the pass. The ascent generally takes around 4–5 hours, rewarding us with magnificent panoramic views across the Alai Valley and the towering peaks of the Pamir-Alay Mountains. In clear weather, we may catch our first glimpse of Lenin Peak (7,134m / 23,406ft), one of the highest mountains in the Pamirs, rising above the impressive Trans-Alay Range. The sweeping mountain landscapes and distant snow-capped summits make this one of the most memorable sections of our trek. After enjoying lunch and taking in the spectacular views, we begin our descent along an old, disused mountain road towards the gorge below. Our route passes through the dramatic 'Rock Gate', a striking natural feature, before continuing towards Darbaza Tash Yurt Camp. Upon arrival, we settle into our traditional Kyrgyz yurts, where we enjoy a well-earned dinner and rest after a rewarding day of trekking. Today we travel by vehicle through the spectacular Alai Valley to Achik-Tash Base Camp, situated at the foot of Lenin Peak (7,134m / 23,406ft). Along the way, we enjoy sweeping views of alpine pastures, rugged mountain ranges and the towering snow-capped peaks of the Trans-Alay Range. Upon arrival, we settle into our spacious twin-share tents and enjoy the impressive mountain scenery. The well-established base camp offers comfortable facilities, including a heated two-storey dining area, bar, shop and communal lounge. Electricity is also available throughout the camp, including in the accommodation tents. The remainder of the day is spent relaxing, acclimatising to the altitude and preparing for the next stage of our trek. Today we have the option to enjoy a rest day at Achik-Tash Base Camp, allowing time to relax, acclimatise and prepare our equipment for the trek to Camp 1. For those feeling energetic, an optional acclimatisation walk takes us towards the ridge of nearby Petrovsky Peak, reaching approximately 4,200m (13,780ft). From here, we enjoy spectacular panoramic views across the Achik-Tash Valley and the surrounding snow-capped peaks of the Trans-Alay Range. After our walk, we return to Base Camp for the evening, with time to rest and prepare for the next stage of our journey. After breakfast, we travel by 4WD vehicle to Lukovaya Polyana, where we begin our trek towards Lenin Peak Camp 1 via Puteshestvennikov Pass. Our route follows a well-established mountain trail, with the ascent to the pass taking approximately 1–1.5 hours. From here, we enjoy spectacular views of Lenin Peak (7,134m / 23,406ft) and the impressive Lenin Glacier, with the possibility of encountering snow along the way. We then descend towards the lateral moraine of the Lenin Glacier, continuing through rugged alpine terrain surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks. Along the way, we carefully cross a mountain river, where water levels can rise considerably as temperatures increase throughout the day. Our trek continues towards Lenin Peak Camp 1, situated at approximately 4,400m (14,436ft), where we settle into our tents and enjoy the spectacular high-altitude mountain scenery. Accommodation: Lenin Peak Camp 1 – tent camp (4,400m / 14,436ft) Walking Distance/Time: Approximately 14km / 8.7 miles, 4–5 hours Ascent: +800m / 2,625ft

Today we set out to summit Yukhin Peak (5,130m / 16,831ft), a rewarding high-altitude ascent offering spectacular views of Lenin Peak and the surrounding Pamir Mountains. Our route follows rocky mountain trails and scree slopes, with no technical rock or ice climbing required under normal conditions. From the summit, we are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the imposing north face of Lenin Peak, the vast Alai Valley and the surrounding snow-capped peaks of the Trans-Alay Range. After enjoying the spectacular mountain scenery, we begin our descent along loose scree slopes, where sections of the trail allow us to carefully descend through the gravelly terrain. We then return to Camp 1 for a well-earned rest after a challenging and rewarding day in the mountains. After breakfast, we begin our return trek to Lenin Peak Base Camp, retracing our route through the spectacular mountain landscapes of the Trans-Alay Range. The trail begins with a short ascent before descending steadily through rugged alpine terrain, following the moraines and valleys beneath the towering peaks of the Pamirs. After approximately 4–5 hours of trekking, we arrive back at Achik-Tash Base Camp, where we can enjoy a well-earned shower, relax and take in the magnificent mountain scenery after our high-altitude adventure. Today we leave the spectacular mountains of the Pamirs behind and begin our scenic drive back to Osh. Our journey takes us through the expansive Alai Valley, passing traditional villages, alpine pastures and rugged mountain landscapes as we gradually descend towards the city. Upon arrival in Osh, we check into our hotel, with the remainder of the day at leisure to relax after our trek or explore the city's bustling markets, cafés and local attractions. This morning we make an early start for our flight from Osh to Bishkek, a journey of approximately 50 minutes. This is a great opportunity to visit local markets, enjoy the city's cafés or purchase any last-minute souvenirs before our journey concludes. What does 2 to guarantee mean?

It means two travellers are enough to confirm the departure. It could be 2 more to add to the group, or the date only needs 2 people to run. Either way, if you book for two people, the date will become guaranteed to run.

What happens if my departure does not reach minimum numbers?

You will know the status before you book. Every date on this page is labelled, and dates marked “Guaranteed to go” are running regardless of further bookings. Where a date has not reached its minimum we either offer a surcharge to operate for a smaller group size so it can still run, or we cancel it. We contact you directly either way.

Will I get my money back if you cancel a departure?

If we cancel a departure due to not meeting minimum trip numbers, you receive a full refund of everything you have paid us less any non recoverable costs, where insurance may cover you. We cannot refund money committed elsewhere – additional non refundable deposits advised at the time of booking, flights, visas, vaccinations, gear - which is why it is worth waiting for “Guaranteed to go” before booking other arrangements around this trip date. Please read our Booking Terms and Conditions before you book.

Why can't I book some dates online?

Each trip closes online a set time before departure. Permits, internal flights and hut or campsite bookings all have to be arranged before we take payment. Call or enquire as it might still be possible to organise last minute places.

The date I want is closed. What are my options and why does it say to enquire?

Cancellations happen and places do open up on closed dates, so it is worth being on our list. We can also tell you which nearby date on the same trip has space, which is usually the faster route.

None of these dates suit me. Can you run this trip on another date?
