Overflowing with rich cultural traditions, history and stunning architecture Morocco’s imperial cities provide the framework for our journey. On this cultural and textile journey we'll explore Rabat, Meknes and the colourful markets and intricate laneways of the medieval medina in Fes before travelling across the foothills of the Middle Atlas. A natural divide between coast and desert influences, the other side of the mountains yields the distinctive architecture of kasbahs (ancient fortresses) and the deep orange colours of the dunes on the edge of the Sahara Desert captivate our attention. We explore Marrakech, one of the most important artistic centres in the Islamic world, where there is time to bargain in the souqs showcasing a wide variety of handicrafts and food. Our final sojourn is to the charming and relaxing seaside town of Essaouira showcasing the mix of Portuguese, Andaloucian and Berber influence where we have ample time to soak up the atmosphere of this coastal oasis.

This trip is a true journey of contrasts and discovery, and in the company of Barbara Mullan, is sure to delight.


On arrival in Casablanca you will be met and transferred to the group hotel if arriving on Day 1. There will be a group briefing around 7:00pm at the hotel (please check at reception for reconfirmation of timing). If you arrive in Casablanca prior to Day 1 of the trip, private transfers can be arranged at additional cost. Please ask your Reservations Consultant for details. This morning we will visit the Mosque Hassan 11 in Casablanca and will have a short city drive en route to Rabat, It is the administrative capital of the country. Our journey continues to the north into the Rif mountains with their patchwork like agriculture, and the fascinating town of Chefchaouen. Overnight Casa Miguel, Chefchaouen (or similar)

Today will be spent in Chefchaouen. It is one of the prettiest towns in Morocco, with it’s whitewashed houses with blue doors, set beneath the striking peaks of the Rif Mountains.You explore the medina and visit an NGO where people card, spin and weave wool to create fabric for Jelaba and Kashaba. Overnight Casa Miguel, Chefchaouen.

You continue this day and drive in the morning via Ouezzane to Volubilis, approx. 2:30 hrs., and visit the spectacular Roman ruin. Some of the mosaics are very well preserved. Around noon we'll stop for lunch at the pilgrimage village Moulay Idriss. Only a short drive away is Meknès, also a former imperial city, where we'll stop for a short visit before continuing to Fes. In the morning in the Medina of Fes, we will visit the tanneries, continue to the dyers souk and cactus silk weaving workshop and a pottery . The walk in the Medina will take you centuries back to the intrigues of a mixed culture of Moorish, Jewish, Berber and Arab culture. In the afternoon we will visit a co-operative,and learn about Berber carpets and more. Overnight Riad Salam, Fes (or similar)

In the morning we will have a cultural sightseeing and visit a Medrassa and participate in a workshop in an embroidery shop to learn ‘Fes’ stitch or an alternative cultural experience. In the afternoon we will travel to Sefrou, a small market town on the old Saharan trade route, not far from Fes and participate in a workshop making cherry buttons at the ‘ Women’s Cherry Button Co-op of Sefrou’ or an alternative cultural experience. Dinner in the Riad. Overnight Riad Salam, Fes (or similar)

You continue your journey and travel from Fes to the alpine style town of Ifrane and along the Middle Atlas mountains with its cedar and oak forests to Khenifra, Kasbah Tadla and the city of Beni Mellal which is surrounded by the huge and copious fields in the plain of Saiss. The night you will spend in the small town of Afourar. Overnight Hotel Le Tazarkount, Afourar (or similar)

From Afourer you will travel across the High Atlas Mountain to a Berber Village where you will visit Berber people in their mud brick houses, watch demonstrations of rug making and rug wool dyeing. Passing through the town of Azilal and stopping at the amazing waterfalls of Ouzoud, experience a tagine for lunch and head to the city of Marrakech. Overnight Riad Al Jazira (or similar).

Today you will visit the Bahai Palace in a calesh( horse drawn carriages- a typical way of transport in the inner city) followed by a visit to the Tiskwin Museum, a private collection of textiles and artifacts from Southern Morocco and the saharan basin. . After lunch you will visit the exotic gardens of Les Majorelles, the Berber Arts Museum, a colletion of Yves St. Laurent, including regional Berber costumes, jewellery and carpets. In the late afternoon, you may wish to visit the main square Djemaa El Fna and get a first impression of this lively square. Perhaps enjoy a sweet mint tea at one of the cafes. Overnight Riad Al Jazira (or similar).

After a leisurely morning your journey continues to the Atlantic coast - you will travel from Marrakech to the charming town of Essouira, again a change of scenery. In the afternoon we'll have a guided orientation walking tour to the Medina, the Scala and the port of Essaouira. You will also visit some workshops as the silver cooperative and the artisans working on thuja wood. Overnight Riad Mimouna, Essaouira.

Essaouira is a small town with a big mixture of Berber, Arab and Portuguese influence. The old Kasbah, the impressive Scala and traditional port witness a great variety and rich cultures. We will have an orientation walk of the town and then you have two full days to explore this welcoming town, only by foot as most of the sites are within the medina. You can also take a walk along the beach or try a camel or a horse ride. Overnight Riad Mimouna (or similar), Essaouira.

In Essaouira. At leisure. Tonight we will have a farewell dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight Riad Mimouna, Essaouira.

Our trip concludes after breakfast. There will be a transfer to Marrakech or if you prefer you may wish to book your onward flight from Essaouira.

About Your Leader

Barbara Mullan, Textiles Guide

Barbara works with groups of adults throughout Australia as a tutor of Textiles. Her passion is ethnic textiles, and Indian textiles in particular. As a Fellowe of the South Australian Embroiderer’s Guild Museum team, and their Ethnic Embroidery Study Group, she continues to add to her textile knowledge. Barbara has led many textile trips with World Expeditions to India and Bhutan. After travelling to Morocco recently, Barbara is looking forward to returning to Morocco in April.
