This is one of the truly memorable days of our journey as we trek towards Concordia, one of the most spectacular mountain locations on Earth. Weather permitting, we also experience an unforgettable moment along the way: our first view of K2 (8,611m / 28,251ft).
Leaving Goro II, we continue along the Baltoro Glacier, following rolling moraine deeper into the heart of the Central Karakoram. To the north, views open along the Biange Glacier towards the striking Muztagh Tower (7,273m / 23,862ft), while an extraordinary collection of peaks begins to surround us.
As we approach Concordia, we weave between immense formations of ice and moraine as several great glaciers converge. Mitre Peak (6,010m / 19,718ft) rises dramatically nearby, with Baltoro Kangri (7,312m / 23,990ft) beyond, while the great mountains of the Gasherbrum group dominate the skyline ahead.
Then comes one of the great sights of the expedition. Broad Peak (8,051m / 26,414ft) fills the horizon and, rising above the Godwin-Austen Glacier, the unmistakable pyramid of K2 towers over the surrounding mountains. At 8,611 metres, K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth and one of the defining peaks of the Karakoram.
After approximately 4–5 hours of trekking, we arrive at Concordia (4,650m / 15,256ft). Situated near the meeting point of the Baltoro and Godwin-Austen glacier systems, Concordia is surrounded by an astonishing concentration of some of the world's highest and most spectacular mountains.
Few campsites can compare. With K2, Broad Peak, the Gasherbrums and a skyline of immense Karakoram peaks surrounding us, we settle into camp and have time to simply take in the scale and beauty of this extraordinary place.
