Our classic approach trek to K2 Base Camp along the Baltoro Glacier provides the perfect entry into the amphitheatre of Concordia, surrounded by the highest concentration of 8,000m (26,246ft) peaks anywhere on the planet.
From this dramatic base, forays into the heart of the Karakoram reveal an unrivalled collection of peaks that define the inner range, including the Golden Throne (Baltoro Kangri, 7,312m/23,989ft), Gasherbrum IV, Broad Peak (8,047m/26,401ft), Chogolisa (7,665m/25,148ft) and K2 (8,611m/28,251ft) - the second-highest mountain in the world and one of the most coveted among mountaineers.
This demanding expedition leads through spectacular mountain wilderness, following narrow trails above the swirling Braldu River before ascending the vast icy expanse of the Baltoro. From our camps we allow several days to ascend the Godwin Austen Glacier to K2 Base Camp, where we can observe the formidable climbing routes to the summit and share the space with mountaineering expeditions preparing for their attempts. Time is also set aside to explore adjoining valleys and to identify the legendary peaks that have inspired generations of climbers and trekkers.
With ample contingency days planned, we maximise the chance of clear views and safe passage, including the opportunity, weather permitting, to cross the snowbound Gondogoro La (5,585m/18,325ft) – a thrilling high pass that rewards with one of the finest panoramas of the Karakoram, where four 8,000m giants stand in a single view. Trekking days can be long, between 6 and 12 hours, with glacial crossings and high altitude adding to the challenge, but the rewards are beyond compare.
These treks are designed for fit and experienced adventurers ready for the demands of altitude and rugged terrain, yet no prior mountaineering experience is required. Under the guidance of our expert leaders you will learn the use of crampons, ropes and ice axes when conditions demand it, travelling roped across glaciers with safety always the priority. Our itineraries are carefully staged to allow for gradual acclimatisation, with rest days, altitude monitoring and Portable Altitude Chambers (PAC) carried on all journeys above 4,000m (13,120ft). Descent is always the first and most effective response to altitude illness, and our leaders are trained to make conservative decisions to safeguard every member of the team.
With porters and pack animals carrying the bulk of the gear, and our dedicated crew managing camps, meals and logistics, you are free to focus on the effort and the experience. The Karakoram presents real challenges – unpredictable weather, extreme remoteness and complex terrain – but with our decades of expertise and unmatched safety record in high-altitude trekking, you are in capable hands. Combine your own preparation, fitness and flexibility with our expert support, and this journey will reward you with one of the most exhilarating and unforgettable trekking experiences on Earth.
