For many Australians, the Kokoda Track is more than a trek. It is the site of one of the most significant campaigns of World War II, fought in defence of Port Moresby. Following in the footsteps of those who fought in the 1942 campaign, you'll spend nine days trekking through the geographical heart of Papua New Guinea, from tropical rainforests to the rugged Owen Stanley Ranges. Accompanied by your guide, you'll stay in secluded jungle camps near traditional villages, connect with local communities, and learn about the history and culture that have shaped the Kokoda Track. The 96 km (60 mi) trek is physically demanding, with every step revealing more of the history, landscapes and communities of Papua New Guinea.

Kokoda Trail trek - things you need to know | World Expeditions
This tour was well organised and all aspects were covered. Even when unexpected circumstances occurred, they were easily sorted! Staff were professional and so friendly and made my adventure so enjoyable.
The Trek was everything I had hoped for and more
The porters were amazing! Disappointed by some aspects of organisation and head office teams.
The guide certainly knew the history of the area, and that was impressive to listen to. We did not find Kokoda a physical challenge. Trekkers need to understand the history of the place to really get value for money - don't be ignorant. Enjoy the porters, ask them questions, become friends with them - this was THE best part of the trek and we didn't have personal porters.
World Expeditions capacity to arrange competitive travel arrangements including management of late changes was great. Trek information was good including preparation programs.
Marvelously organized and conducted. A real emotional involvement by an eclectic based on the history, geography and the people. Top marks to tour guide for efficiency, compassion and leadership. A memorable experience.
Kokoda Track was a soul retching experiences that challenges the physical body and bends your mind with insight into the condition and the circumstances that the soldiers endured during the campaign. The guide was exceptional her passion for the history and storytelling ability gave me the strength to keep going on the toughest hills. The local porter staff make the trip achievable, they kept me safe, encouraged me and supported me, making sure I always had enough water, a dry tent to sleep in and keeping me upright when slipping and tripping. I would highly recommend the trip to everyone. My main tip would be to train hard before going, our group had a high level of fitness and everyone had trained, this meant we were not walking in the dark and got to appreciate the beautiful country.
Had an absolute awesome time with amazing staff and porters on Kokoda.
10/10 value for money and program content, variety & operation. Frank Taylor is the best feature of this trip, everything that he knows, history, people management and ability to bring stories to life; an experienced guide. Thanks for a trip of a lifetime!
Every departure date advises whether the date is confirmed, and roughly how full it is. Here is what each one means.
If a date shows Guaranteed to go, it runs regardless of further bookings.
It means two travellers are enough to confirm the departure. It could be 2 more to add to the group, or the date only needs 2 people to run. Either way, if you book for two people, the date will become guaranteed to run.
You will know the status before you book. Every date on this page is labelled, and dates marked “Guaranteed to go” are running regardless of further bookings. Where a date has not reached its minimum we either offer a surcharge to operate for a smaller group size so it can still run, or we cancel it. We contact you directly either way.
If we cancel a departure due to not meeting minimum trip numbers, you receive a full refund of everything you have paid us less any non recoverable costs, where insurance may cover you. We cannot refund money committed elsewhere – additional non refundable deposits advised at the time of booking, flights, visas, vaccinations, gear - which is why it is worth waiting for “Guaranteed to go” before booking other arrangements around this trip date. Please read our Booking Terms and Conditions before you book.
Each trip closes online a set time before departure. Permits, internal flights and hut or campsite bookings all have to be arranged before we take payment. Call or enquire as it might still be possible to organise last minute places.
Cancellations happen and places do open up on closed dates, so it is worth being on our list. We can also tell you which nearby date on the same trip has space, which is usually the faster route.
Yes, as a private departure. We can run this trip on a date you choose, for your own group - family, friends, a club, or in many cases, just for the two of you. Tell us when you want to travel and who is coming, and we will build it around that.
The Kokoda Track has not been modernised or purpose-built for optimal trekking. It follows the original wartime route used during the 1942 military campaign and remains largely unchanged as part of its presevation. The track is steep, muddy, uneven and physically demanding, with river crossings, exposed ridgelines and variable conditions depending on weather. This is a historic endurance route rather than a constructed walking trail, which is a key reason the Kokoda Track remains such a challenging and rewarding experience.
As the track was created out of necessity during WWII, it requires a higher level of fitness compared to many other well-known walking trails. This trip is graded Moderate to Challenging and demands strong physical fitness, endurance and mental resilience. Expect long days on steep terrain, frequent ascents and descents, river crossings, humid conditions and often muddy underfoot conditions. We strongly recommend structured training prior to departure, including hill walking with a pack. If you are unsure about your suitability for this trip, please speak with us before booking.
Yes. We strongly encourage all travellers to hire a personal porter. The terrain is demanding and carrying a full pack significantly increases fatigue and injury risk. A porter allows you to trek with a lighter day pack, improving safety, comfort and overall enjoyment. While trekking, the porters will aim to assist you wherever possible, to make your experience even more enjoyable. They will also keep you informed about the availability of water along the track. Porters are hired on a one-per-person basis only and must be arranged in advance, as it is not possible to organise a porter once on the track.
Hiring a porter also helps directly support local communities. Porter fees are paid directly to the porters, providing sustainable income for them and their families and contributing meaningfully to village economies along the Kokoda Track.
