Today we begin our introduction to Sri Lanka, exploring the city of Colombo, Sri Lanka’s energetic capital and home to more than 5 million people. Once a modest trading port, it’s now a fascinating blend of old and new - colonial era architecture, leafy lakeside suburbs, and a growing skyline of modern towers, all stretched along the island’s western coast.
Begin at the Paliyagoda Fish Market, the country’s largest seafood hub where over 2,000 traders gather before dawn each day to auction tuna, cuttlefish and reef fish fresh from the Indian Ocean. Continue to the nearby Manning Market, Colombo’s oldest wholesale market, now operating in a vast new complex where hundreds of vendors trade fruits, vegetables and spices from across the island, from glossy purple eggplants and sacks of dried chilies to fragrant curry leaves and tamarind pods.
Wander through the narrow streets of Pettah and Fort, the city’s traditional commercial heart, where every block has its own specialty: textiles, brassware, ayurvedic herbs and cooking utensils
Tonight a memorable welcome dinner awaits, at the renowned Ministry of Crab, and a chance to meet founder and chef Dharshan Munidasa who’ll share insights into Sri Lanka’s seafood traditions.
