Difficulty Grading: Introductory to Moderate
To determine the grade of a particular adventure we consider a number of factors. These include the distances cycled, the condition of the terrain, the altitude, and the length of the trip. The Ho Chi Minh City to Angkor Wat Cycle is graded moderate. This trip does not take place at altitude and most cycling surfaces are well paved roads, however some days cycling are over rough un-graded surfaces and the climate in Cambodia is very hot and humid. Expect cycling time to average up to 7 hours per day. In order to complete this trip we advise that you undertake regular exercise – swimming, cycling, jogging, for at least 45 minutes three or four times a week for a minimum of three months prior to your departure.

Overview

This cycling journey travels from Ho Chi Minh City through the Mekong Delta and into Cambodia, combining rural riding with cultural exploration. The route passes rice paddies, waterways and local villages, with highlights including Cai Rang floating market, Tra Su bird sanctuary and a Mekong River journey to Phnom Penh. In Cambodia, you explore Phnom Penh, cycle through Koh Dach’s weaving villages and visit the archaeological site of Sambor Prei Kuk. The journey concludes in Siem Reap with cycling around the Angkor temples and visits to communities on Tonle Sap Lake.

Join the trip in Ho Chi Minh City and meet the local support team of guides, mechanics and drivers. A bike fitting is scheduled at 4pm with a transfer to our bike depot so please ensure you arrive in plenty of time for this. We can assist with pre and post tour accommodation should you wish to avail of it, otherwise make your way to our group hotel and bike fitting. Once our bikes have been assigned, we'll enjoy by a casual dinner with our team to learn about the days ahead. Ho Chi Minh City is Vietnam’s largest city and a key gateway to the Mekong Delta. Transfer to the Mekong Delta and begin cycling towards Tra Vinh. The route passes coconut groves, canal bridges and flat rural roads with sections through plantations. The Mekong Delta is a key agricultural region known for coconut and rice production. The day ends in Tra Vinh City. Accommodation: Cuu Long Hotel or similar

Cycle through flat landscapes dominated by rice paddies and canals. A visit is made to Ba Om Pond, a historic Khmer 800 yer old site known for its lotus blooms. The Mekong Delta is one of Vietnam’s primary rice-producing regions, shaped by centuries of river-based agriculture. The day ends with a transfer to Can Tho. Begin with a boat journey to Cai Rang floating market, a key trading hub on the river.Floating markets developed as a response to the delta’s extensive canal network, where waterways remain central to commerce. Continue cycling along quiet riverside roads through fruit-growing regions and rural settlements. The delta waterways support trade and daily life for local communities. Last stop would be a visit to Bang Lang Stork Sanctuary. The day ends in Long Xuyen, with a vehicle transfer option available for the final section Accommodation: Hoa Binh Long Xuyen Hotel or similar

We will drive 60 minutes via our private shuttle to the seat of the Southern Kingdom of Vietnam as it was recognized 2000 years ago. We’ll visit a museum in the area to learn more about the history and then set off on the 55km journey to Tra Su National Reserve and Bird Sanctuary. The route includes raised pathways across flood-prone farmland. Tra Su is known for its wetlands, birdlife and canal systems. The day ends in Chau Doc, with the option to transfer by vehicle if required. Accommodation: Chau Pho Hotel or similar

Travel by speedboat from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh. The journey follows the Mekong River and crosses into Cambodia. The ride will take about 4 hours and 30 minutes. Visa at the border will be arranged by the crew. Please prepare a paper copy of your e-Visa and USD35 undamaged cash for the border. You will have the rest of the day to explore Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital city. Accommodation: Ohana Phnom Penh Palace Hotel or similar

Explore Phnom Penh by cyclo along the riverfront and central boulevards. The city reflects Cambodia’s historical influences and modern development. Phnom Penh developed as a royal and colonial centre, shaped by both Khmer and French architectural influences. The remainder of the day is at leisure. Travel by boat to Koh Dach before cycling through village communities. The route includes visits to weaving villages and local cultural sites. Traditional silk weaving remains an important local industry. The day ends with a transfer to Kampong Thom. Accommodation: Kampong Thom Palace or similar

Cycle towards Sambor Prei Kuk through rural landscapes and forested areas. The temple complex dates to the pre-Angkorian period and consists of brick structures set within woodland. Sambor Prei Kuk was an early capital of the Chenla Kingdom, predating Angkor by several centuries. Continue cycling through countryside before transferring to Siem Reap. Did this trip with my 20 year old son. Great father son bonding time experience. Would go back and do it again happily. You need to be pretty fit to get through the whole event. Definitely take factor 50 sun cream, gloves to keep your hands from burning, long sleeved tops and loose trousers to cycle in. It was 35 to 37 degrees when we went in early February. Guides were amazing, off road bicycles were great. The last two days in Cambodia were pretty arduous but the day cycling around Angkor Wat was an all time highlight of my life.

We travelled for 12 days by bike in Vietnam and Cambodia - through the Mekong Delta from Saigon and then up to Angkor Wat - with our 13 year old son. We had an amazing time. Some long rides in very hot weather, but our amazing guide managed to gauge things perfectly - stopping for cold sugarcane juice or providing fresh fruit for short breaks. Lots of cultural and historical information, easy access to sites of significance and a great balance between fun and adventure. The accommodation was of a much higher standard than we had expected - the Mekong delta homestay was incredible. Our group of 7 got on really well, which added another element. The cycling was sometimes challenging due to the heat, but we were able to access areas that no tourists would see - cycling along pathways through villages and rice fields rather than being caught in crowds. Nothing better than pushing yourself and then relaxing with fine local food and the occasional Saigon beer! We loved our trip and will start thinking about where next! Great value too.

Cycling the Mekong Delta

Cycling in the Mekong Delta follows a mix of quiet sealed roads, narrow concrete paths and sections of compacted dirt. Routes are generally flat, running alongside water and through villages, with minimal traffic. Surfaces are mostly smooth and non-technical, though short gravel or dirt sections may occur, particularly in more rural areas.

Cycling the Central Highlands

Cycling across Vietnam’s Central Highlands follows a mix of sealed roads, quiet secondary routes and occasional rural lanes. The terrain is varied with climbs and descents through coffee plantations, forested hills and agricultural landscapes. Road surfaces are generally good throughout, though some rough or broken pavement can occur in more remote areas, along with short gravel sections. Overall, the riding is non-technical, with the main challenge coming from elevation changes in the highlands rather than the surface itself.

Cycling Cambodia

Cycling in Cambodia follows predominantly flat terrain across a mix of sealed rural roads and unpaved red earth tracks. As the landscape becomes drier, routes pass through open countryside, rice fields and small villages, with generally low traffic and a steady riding pace. Surfaces can vary between smooth pavement and compacted dirt, with some looser or dusty sections depending on conditions. Around the Angkor region, riding takes place on a network of quieter backroads and trails linking temple sites, providing a more immersive way to experience the landscape and its historical setting.

Daily cycling distances range from 45 to 80km (28 to 49.7mi) on generally flat terrain.
