World Expeditions Reviews

Every World Expeditions traveller is sent a survey when they get home, and asked to leave a review. We publish them on the trip page they belong to, so you can read what people said about the exact trip you are considering, not just about us in general.

Below is a selection by region, with a note on who each region suits and what your options are. Every review names the trip, the traveller and the country they travelled from. For the full set on any trip, open that trip page and scroll to the reviews section.

Trekking in Nepal and the Himalaya

Best for: first-timers at altitude through to experienced high-pass walkers. If you have wondered whether you are fit enough for Everest Base Camp, this is the region where the honest answer is most often yes, provided the itinerary paces you properly.

Your options: Everest Base Camp Trek in Comfort, Gokyo & the Renjo La, Everest High Passes and Everest Circuit & the Cho La for the Khumbu; Annapurna Chitwan, Annapurna Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna Circuit for a gentler start; Everest Trails to Ama Dablam Base Camp if you want the Everest region while staying below 5,000 m.

Nepal is where we started in 1975, and our operation there works exclusively for World Expeditions. Acclimatisation days are built into the itinerary rather than offered as an extra, leaders carry a group medical kit and a portable altitude chamber, and on Everest treks you are loaned a trek pack with a four-season sleeping bag and down jacket. What travellers write about most, though, is the crew.

“We had an amazing time going to EBC. Roy our guide was fantastic. We all made it! All the porters, cooks and Sherpas were all amazing and only ever wanted to help us. I would highly recommend.” Kelly E., Australia, Everest Base Camp Trek in Comfort

“Couldn't have asked for a better trek support team and guide. Everything went smooth which caused me to fully focus on enjoying the trip.” Koen K., Netherlands, Annapurna Chitwan

Walking in Japan

Best for: walkers who want culture, food and quiet trails as much as distance, and for people who would rather travel independently than in a group but still want everything arranged.

Your options: Backroads of Japan if you want a guided small group; Nakasendo Way Self-Guided and the Kumano Kodo Self-Guided Hike if you would rather walk at your own pace with route notes, accommodation and luggage transfers handled for you.

Japan is the clearest example of our habit of routing away from the obvious. Two things come up repeatedly in reviews: how far the walking sits from the tourist trail, and how accurate the trip grading turns out to be.

“Excellent guide, capable, experienced and unflappable. Accommodation well located and very good standard. Walks were away from the tourist path.” Fiona P., Australia, Backroads of Japan

“This hike was perfect for the length & difficulty rating. Support & accommodation was outstanding. My second trip with World Expeditions (Jordan) & would not hesitate to book further adventures.” David W., Australia, Nakasendo Way Self-Guided

Central Asia and the Silk Road

Best for: the experienced traveller who has already done Nepal and Peru and wants somewhere that still needs explaining at a dinner party.

Your options: Silk Road to Samarkand via Kashgar and Ancient Silk Road Cities: The Five Stans for the cultural route; Fann Mountains Trek & Silk Road Cities and the Transcaucasian Trail Hike in Georgia if you want the walking to carry the trip.

These are logistically demanding countries where a leader who actually lives there is the difference between a good trip and a confusing one. Our leaders are local and employed in their own countries, and groups stay small.

“This trip was like three trips in one with very different countries. The tour leaders were knowledgeable and experienced, the sights were amazing and the group was small. Highly recommend.” Wayne B., Australia, Silk Road to Samarkand via Kashgar

Kilimanjaro, Africa and wildlife

Best for: anyone climbing their first big mountain, and travellers who want wildlife on foot rather than only from a vehicle.

Your options: Kilimanjaro by the Rongai or Lemosho routes, which take longer and summit better than the crowded ones; African Wildlife Explorer and Southern African Desert Rivers and Wildlife for game viewing; walking safaris where you cover ground on foot.

Kilimanjaro is the one region where our treatment of porters is checked by someone other than us. We are an International Mountain Explorers Connection Partner for Responsible Travel, which means the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project monitors our crew conditions against published guidelines every climbing season. Travellers notice the effect on the mountain.

“Our guide and leader Mussa was fantastic and helped out in so many ways. The assistant guide Eddie was equally great as was Florian our super friendly helper at dinner and on the climb.” John B., Canada, Kilimanjaro – Rongai Route

“This is a wonderful trip. Accommodation and food were excellent. Our guide Collen was well informed, very helpful and relaxed.” Clare D., Australia, Southern African Desert Rivers and Wildlife

South America and Patagonia

Best for: walkers who want big mountain scenery without the altitude of the Himalaya, and travellers drawn to the Inca routes beyond the standard four-day trail.

Your options: the Great Patagonian Traverse and Patagonia Adventure for the south; the Huayhuash Circuit in Peru if you want a serious high route with far fewer people on it.

Patagonian weather decides the day, which is why the group and the guides matter more here than almost anywhere.

“Our Patagonia holiday was a wonderful experience. A really great group which shared the joy and laughter of experiences. Some days were long as climbed to many iconic mountains and glaciers. Wow magic! Absolute credit to our guides who made this amazing journey possible.” Gordon C., Australia, Great Patagonian Traverse

Cycling

Best for: riders who want the distance and the food stops without the logistics, at any level from rail trails to multi-country routes.

Your options: guided rides such as Bike, Hike & Kayak Laos and Cambodia; self-guided routes such as the Vietnam Self-Guided Cycle from the Mekong to the Central Highlands, where the route, bookings and bag transfers are arranged and the days are yours.

Every cycling trip is graded, and the support vehicle exists so that a hard day is optional rather than compulsory.

“The trip exceeded our expectations, everything was really slick and well organised and the routes were great.” Peter D., United Kingdom, Vietnam Self-Guided Cycle: Mekong to Central Highlands

Walking in Europe

Best for: walkers who want a long trail with a theme, and anyone who would rather not organise a pilgrimage route themselves.

Your options: the Camino, including special-interest departures led by a guest expert; alpine and Mediterranean walking across the continent, guided or self-guided.

Special-interest departures are the ones travellers write about at length, because the theme gives the walking a second reason to exist.

“An exceptional experience which combined walking an ancient pilgrimage trail with inspiring writing workshops guided by Dr Stephanie Dale and shared with a delightful, creative, supportive group of fellow pilgrims! Definitely exceed all my expectations.” Janet D., Canada, Walk & Write the Camino with Dr Stephanie Dale

If the standard version does not suit you

Best for: travellers who want the trip but not the compromise, whether that means more comfort, less altitude, a group closer to their own age, or bringing the family.

Your options: In Comfort versions of the major treks, which use permanent camps and better lodges without changing the route; Over 55 departures; family adventures; and lower-altitude alternatives in the same region. Solo travellers are placed in twin share at no surcharge, and get a room to themselves at no charge if numbers are uneven.

The two questions we are asked most are whether a trip can be done with more comfort, and whether it can be done lower. Both have answers, and travellers give them better than we do.

“I recommend this trip to anyone who is looking for a shorter trek to the Everest region, or who wants/needs to stay below 5,000 metres.” Philip O., Australia, Everest Trails to Ama Dablam Base Camp

“Amazing trip. World Expeditions made the whole experience easy from day 1 until the last day we departed. I took my 13 and 15 year old son and we all felt like we were adventuring without losing some of the basic comforts to make the trip feel a little easier. Would highly recommend.” Evan D., Australia, Everest Trails to Ama Dablam Base Camp

Where to find reviews for the trip you are looking at

This page is a sample. The reviews that matter most to you are the ones on the trip you are actually considering, and they sit on that trip's own page, below the itinerary. Use the search or the destination menu to find your trip, then scroll to the reviews section.

How we collect reviews

Every traveller receives a survey when they return home. It asks them to rate the trip, and invites them to leave a review for our website. Reviews are read by our Operations team and managed by the person responsible for that region, not routed to a general inbox. Critical and constructive feedback receives a response, and it is what has shaped the way our trips run over fifty years.

We publish each review with the traveller's first name, surname initial, home country and the trip they travelled on. We do not edit the wording.

Have you travelled with us?

If you have been on a World Expeditions trip, your survey link arrives by email when you get home, and your review goes on your trip's page. If you did not receive it, contact us and we will send it again.
