Cycling the coastline
Though summer is typically hot and humid in the Land of the Rising Sun, Hokkaido is slightly cooler which makes for excellent cycling along the northern coast’s dramatic landscapes. As one of the country’s most idyllic destinations, it provides a range of scenery for cyclists – from farmlands and rolling mountains to caldera lakes and volcanoes. Stopping in ancient fishing villages and temples allows travellers to appreciate the rich cultural heritage and delightful food.

Secrets of Hokkaido by Bike (8 days) departs in July

Making the city-dwellers envious
With its rugged natural beauty and legendary hospitality, northern Japan is a first-class destination among locals and foreigners alike. Travellers visit World Heritage shrines and temples, cruise among pine-covered islands and are immersed in the exuberance of youthful Sapporo without missing out on the country’s staples. Topping it off is a stop at the famous snow-capped peak of Mt. Fuji and the Five Lakes region.

Trekking along Japan’s oldest path
World Expeditions’ most popular itinerary in Japan combines trekking ancient pilgrimage trails with visits to modern cities all while keeping up the ‘backroads’ theme. Groups get the chance to stay in ryokans, traditional inns, gaze at the nation’s symbol, Mt. Fuji and trek along Yamanobe Road, Japan’s oldest transit route dating from the 6th century. Travellers will also enjoy discreet opportunities to experience temple gardens, bohemian street culture and peerless Buddhist art and architecture.

Backroads of Japan (15 days) departs March-November
