What are the World Nomad Games?

If Mongolia’s Naadam Festival is the world’s best-known nomadic celebration, the World Nomad Games offer something even more immersive.

Held in the heart of Central Asia, this remarkable gathering brings together ancient sports, horse culture, music and traditions that remain deeply connected to everyday life in the region.

For travellers exploring Kyrgyzstan’s mountains, lakes and high pastures, the games provide a rare opportunity to experience genuine nomadic culture a a living tradition.

What Are the World Nomad Games?

First launched in Kyrgyzstan in 2014, the World Nomad Games were created to celebrate and preserve the heritage of nomadic peoples from across the Eurasian steppe.

Often described as the “Olympics of nomadic culture”, the games feature horseback sports, wrestling, falconry, mounted archery, traditional music, storytelling and cultural ceremonies. Countries from across Central Asia, the Caucasus and beyond now participate, but Kyrgyzstan remains the spiritual home of the event.

What makes the games special is their authenticity. Entire communities travel long distances to attend, riders train year-round, and traditions passed down through generations are proudly showcased in front of local crowds and international visitors alike.

Where Are the Games Held?

The games have moved between host nations in recent years, but Kyrgyzstan - particularly the spectacular Issyk-Kul region - remains most closely associated with the event.

Set against snow-capped mountains and vast alpine pastures known as jailoo, the atmosphere extends well beyond the competition grounds. Villages and camps fill with folk music, traditional food, handicrafts and nomadic celebrations long into the evening.

For travellers already trekking through the Tian Shan Mountains or exploring the Silk Road landscapes of Central Asia, the setting feels like a natural extension of the journey.

What Can You Experience?

Kok Boru

The signature event is kok boru, a fast-paced horseback contest often compared to polo or rugby on horseback. Riders battle for possession at full speed in one of the most intense traditional sports in Central Asia.

Traditional Wrestling

Wrestling remains one of the region’s oldest cultural traditions, with athletes representing different regional styles and communities.

Eagle Hunting

Golden eagle hunters demonstrate extraordinary horsemanship and centuries-old hunting traditions that continue to survive across the steppe.

Nomadic Culture

Beyond the arenas, you’ll encounter yurt villages, storytellers, musicians, felt-makers and traditional cooking demonstrations that reveal the depth of nomadic life and culture.

Why Attend the World Nomad Games?

For travellers seeking meaningful cultural experiences, the World Nomad Games offer something increasingly rare: traditions that remain connected to the people who live them.

Kyrgyzstan is already renowned for its alpine trekking, remote valleys and Silk Road heritage. Experiencing the games alongside a trekking or cultural journey through the region adds a deeper understanding of the landscapes, horse culture and mountain communities that define Central Asia.

The World Nomad Games are still relatively unknown outside adventure travel circles, which is part of their appeal. For those drawn to authentic cultural immersion and active exploration, this is one of the most rewarding events in the region.
