Fascinating experience! Learned a lot about the diverse cultures and histories of the different regions in China, also about Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, whilst travelling the vast distances by different modes of transport with our guides, Harvey (China), Aibek (Kyrgyzstan) and Guzalya (Uzbekistan) who were always happy to share their knowledge. The landscapes in Turpan and Heaven's Lake are spectacular, and the views of the dramatic Tian Shan mountains during our drive to Naryn via Torugart Pass and also in Naryn are breathtaking!
Samarkand is said to be the jewel of the Silk Road and one of the oldest cities in the world, which for centuries remained a key centre of the Great Silk Road. Unfortunately we had only one day to visit. I feel our visit is somewhat incomplete without a visit to Afrasiab Ancient Site and the Afrasiab Museum of Samarkand (I know that it is not in the itinerary). Maybe on Day 25 we could have boarded an early train and would have had time to visit Afrasiab in the afternoon.
We did not visit Astana Tomb on Day 13, which I was told was then closed to the public.
It rained on the day we visited Ala Archa NP. We had our lunch in a restaurant instead. Aibek invited local musicians to perform for us. They played Kyrgyz musical instruments. Thanks to Aibek, we had this wonderful opportunity to listen to such beautiful music and appreciate the impressive performances.
