Where to go in Africa in January and February

Whether you're looking to trek to new heights, immerse yourself with local cultures or want to come face to face with Africa's Big 5, the January and February season offer a diverse range of treks, cultural journeys and safari experiences that will have you reaching for your passport.

WHY TRAVEL IN JANUARY OR FEBRUARY?

  • January will see much of the rain settled across much of the continent in time for some of the year’s biggest wildlife experiences.
  • It's cub season! So expect cute newborns and some exciting predator action.
  • Find your route to the top of Africa's highest mountain with clearer skies and the chance to encounter snow at the summit of Kilimanjaro.
  • In the middle of its dry season, mountain trekking through Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest during February makes it a great time to see the gorillas. With less rain and mud, it makes for a more comfortable trek.
  • Trekking in East Africa is ideal during this period. Consider the Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda, Simien Mountains in Ethiopia and Mount Kenya.
  • Sunshine is aplenty during February, so you'll want to get your adventure started in South Africa to spot the Big Five in Eastern Cape with a hike in the spectacular Drakensberg mountains.
