Where to hike in Australia's Outback

Discover the heart and soul of Australia

The Australian Outback holds legendary status across the world with its mix of desert plains and tropical landscapes that are deeply-rooted in indigenous history. You'll find magnificent waterfalls, ancient rock formations, unspoilt cooling pools and some of the most starriest night skies.

Covering all of the Northern Territory, most of South Australia and Western Australia and parts of Queensland, these arid areas are best explored during the cooler months (May to early September), so the sunny season doesn't end!

On the fringes of the season, you might spot wildflowers in bloom, while out on the trail you have a better chance of catching a glimpse of some of the elusive wildlife that call these mesmerising regions home.

Popular walking destinations include the Larapinta Trail in Central Australia, Kakadu National Park in the tropical Top End of Australia, the Flinders Ranges in South Australia or the Pilbara or Kimberley regions in Western Australia.

Find a selection of high quality walks below that will get you out among the wilderness on a fun and truly sustainable expedition-style adventure.
