Holly Van de Beek - Australia trekking guide
Holly Van de Beek

Holly-Mae grew up in Melbourne on the Mornington Peninsular and has been with World Expeditions for several years. She loves being out in the bush, being totally self sufficient and able to live out of what's in her pack that she carries on her back every day. Although she has been guiding for a few years, she is constantly surprised and in awe of the beauty and power of nature.

Oscar Bedford - Australia trekking guide
Oscar Bedford

Oscar grew up in northwest Tasmania in a remote area on a 60 acre bush block and spent his childhood years exploring the bush. Oscar has travelled to many places around the world including Cambodia, Thailand, Norway, New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Despite his travels, Oscar thinks nothing beats being back on the remote and unique Franklin River and feels privileged to work on it.

Eco-campsites

We have built four semi-permanent campsites along the Larapinta Trail in Central Australia, in conjunction with the traditional landowners and Northern Territory Parks, allowing us to minimise our environmental footprint while benefiting the local communities.

Ecotourism certification

Many of the itineraries offered by Tasmanian Expeditions and Australian Walking Holidays have achieved Ecotourism Certification at the ECO IV level. The ECO Certification Program is a world first and has been developed to address the need to identify genuine nature and ecotourism operators.

Indigenous tourism

We are continually pioneering experiences with Aboriginal communities to empower them to develop cultural tourism as a means of income. Indigenous tourism educates travellers by giving them unique insights into the Aboriginal culture, which in turn fosters understanding and tolerance.

Useful Australia Info

Australia offers vast desert landscapes, ancient rainforests and dramatic coastlines, with the best regions to explore including Tasmania, the Red Centre, the Great Barrier Reef, the Kimberley and Kakadu.

Tasmania Wilderness: Tasmania’s rugged mountains, temperate rainforest and alpine plateaus offer outstanding trekking on trails such as the Overland Track in Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park.

Red Centre & Uluru: Australia’s Red Centre reveals vast desert landscapes where travellers explore Uluru, Kata Tjuta and ancient cultural sites within Australia’s spiritual heart.

Great Barrier Reef: The Great Barrier Reef stretches along Queensland’s coast where travellers snorkel, dive and explore one of the world’s largest coral reef ecosystems.

Kimberley Region: The remote Kimberley combines dramatic gorges, waterfalls and sandstone ranges explored on walks, boat journeys and wilderness expeditions.

Kakadu National Park: Kakadu’s wetlands, escarpments and ancient rock art sites reveal rich Aboriginal culture and remarkable wildlife.

The best time to travel to Australia for hiking, trekking and adventure touring is generally during spring and autumn, when temperatures are mild across much of the country. In northern Australia and the Red Centre, however, the drier cooler winter months are often the best time for hiking, with comfortable daytime temperatures for exploring desert landscapes, national parks and remote trails.

Australia has a varied climate that ranges from tropical conditions in the north to temperate weather in the south. Temperatures typically range between 5°C and 30°C (41°F–86°F) depending on the region and season, with hotter conditions common in inland desert areas during summer.

Summer brings long daylight hours and vibrant coastal landscapes in southern regions, while winter offers ideal conditions for hiking in the Northern Territory and Australia’s Red Centre, where cooler temperatures and drier conditions make exploring places like Kakadu and Uluru and remote desert trails such as the Larapinta more comfortable.

Most of Australia uses three standard time zones, Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) which is UTC/GMT+10, Australian Central Standard Time (ACST) which is UTC/GMT + 9 1/2 and Australian Western Time (ASWT) which is UTC/GMT +8
